    1626 – The Plymouth Colony Woodcutting Law

    The Settlers of the new world, commonly known as the Pilgrims, had laws set in place for the regulation of cutting down trees for use in fencing, housing and firewood. They were ordered according to law to preserve [the] (meaning the trees) to his best advantage. This is an early show of a group of people caring about their environment and wanting to sustain it, to the extent that they would pass community laws regarding their trees and their use.

    1639 – Deer Hunting Act of Rhode Island

    Rhode Island is a small state, and as a small state had only a small number of resources. This was recognized early on by early settlers of the area, and especially noted by those on the group of islands just off the coast of the state. On an island resources are especially limited because it is harder for the environment to replenish itself, especially in terms of food populations, such as deer. Knowing this, the settlers passed laws restricting the hunting of deer to just six months of the year

    1662 – Sylva

    Written in 1662 and published in 1664, Sylva is one of the most highly influential books on forestry ever created. Written by John Evelyn, he proposed that as a result of timber resources being depleted in England, conservation of those precious resources by managing their depletion. It helped to develop the fields of conservation as well as forestry.
