The Blue Wizards Journey - Alasdair K Duncan

CHAPTER 1 DEATH IS ALWAYS STALKING US!

There was an overseas rugby trip planned and our club was fundraising. One event was a dance at the local club-rooms. It was a fun night there was a band playing some classic cover songs and everybody had a merry time.

The next day as I was recovering from the excesses of the previous night I remember relaxing and reading a book when the phone rang. Something inside me jumped, which I thought was strange. As I answered the phone the voice seemed distant and hard to understand. What was wrong? At last the words began to make sense. I was told that on his way home from the dance last night a friend had killed himself by driving off the road!

Sadness cast its shadow upon me and tears streamed down my face. This was the first time that someone I knew had died! I felt helpless and confused and this event demonstrated the horrific impermanence of life to me.

An overbearing sadness crushed me, this popular young man Kevin had been in the prime of his life. What a waste I thought, as I silently said a prayer for him and asked for him to find peace where ever he had disappeared to!

Later I attended a service for him at his father’s place. There was a deathly silence that smothered the entire room I had never experienced before in my short life. People walked around the room with pale sad broken looks upon their faces in stunned silence. The coffin was open and I stood looking down at Kevin. He looked so different in a suit with his trusty pool cue lying across him. I stared in disbelief fully expecting Kevin to jump out of the casket with his usual cheeky grin and invite me to have a game of Pool, but this was real! He was dead and right in front of my eyes but my mind screamed at me refusing to believe the reality of the situation.

Death always stalks us yet we just forget about it, or refuse to believe it will happen to us.

This tragedy of my friend’s death only deepened my resolve to carry on with my journey to grow, learn and to live life as an adventure. This evolutionary journey could be interpreted as becoming a Wizard or wise. I remembered years ago when the teacher asked me what I wanted to be and the reply I had given. It’s funny to think that the things we say might have an effect on the future.

Because of this tragic situation that had struck me to my core I had decided to treat life has an adventure not knowing how many breaths I had left to live! My mind devastated at Kevin’s death wanted to fill the sickly void grasping for anything in the darkness. Out of the darkness the word Wizard jumped out my desperate mind clung to it like a magnet.

The word Wizard to me is someone who is in touch with their higher or mystical self! There was so much I needed to learn and now I realized for the first time the mortality of life. Each of us has a finite number of breaths we take in a lifetime, and then our lives are over! I was now determined to always live fully in the moment after my friend’s tragic death.

Chapter 2 A TALL SHADOWY FIGURE APPEARS

The Rugby tour with its promise of overseas travel, beckoned; and I grasped the opportunity with both hands. Wanting to leave the memories of the past weeks horrific tragedy far behind. We flew out all dressed in our blazers and I thought I was a man now and no longer a boy; yet I still had so much to learn.

The tour was great fun with some of the lads getting up to all sorts of mischief. It’s great to be young and full of spirit. You don’t ever want to lose that youthful child-like state!

It’s one of the mantras I now tried to live my life by.

One particular place we visited was the Notre Dame Cathedral, in France, I walked around the church inside and out, admiring the twin towers, the magnificent stained glass windows and the intricate carvings and statues.

The gargoyles, the guardians of the Cathedral, stared at me with their strange expressions. Fierce creatures with transfixing steers of sheer intimidation rained down from above as I walked around the haunting Cathedral.

There presents struck fear into me for some reason a shadow seemed to circle me from above I tried to run then suddenly one particular gargoyle jolted my consciousness! I felt dazed and sat down on the grass. That’s not like me to feel this way I thought. I crashed out on the grass into a deep slumber and began to dream that I was walking in woodland. The fresh smells of scents of wild flowers flooded my nostrils.

An eerie enchanting sound of singing drew me towards a clearing among the trees where a roaring fire burned in front of a stone altar. Around the fire people dressed in strange attire, danced and sang, singing songs of praise under the starry sky. These people were pagans or druids who worshipped nature and the cycles of the seasons.

They were celebrating the summer solstice and the abundance of the harvest.

I then noticed a tall dark shadow moving around the circle of trees. It seemed at one with the trees, merging then reappearing in motion, reflecting the people’s dance.

What was this strange tall dark figure that emanated a magical life-giving energy wherever it walked? Sparks of bright luminescent green shoot out from the shadowy figure dancing and merging with the roaring fire.

As I crept closer, there was an earthquake! The earth rumbled and moved beneath me.

I woke up to find one of the lads Nick was pushing me back and forth.

Wake Up! Alistair he shouted. We were wondering where in the hell you were. Come on!

Everybody is waiting in the bus for you. Hurry up!"

I struggled back to the bus in a daze. My mind was in a cloud of mist. I was in a state of disarray, completely taken off guard by the experience. I couldn’t get the strange Shadowy figure out of my mind! Slowly I relaxed into a deep sleep.

Upon waking I found we had traveled a long way and had reached Barcelona in Spain. We decided to go out and have a few drinks and to enjoy the atmosphere. I decided that, that was a superb idea, just what I needed to forget about my weird experience! The beer flowed and the laughter got louder. We danced and mingled with the local lasses. I was having a great night and had forgotten all about my earlier experience.

After many hours, we decided to call it a night and made our way back to our room. Apparently, the lads who had booked the room saying there were only two of us when in fact there were five. We drew straws to see who would sleep in the beds.

I lost and ended up on the floor. I lay there feeling pretty low, and I couldn’t get to sleep.

Time passed and I was almost asleep, when I became aware of someone or something that didn’t belong in the pitch-black room. Maybe my mind was imagining things, but my intuition thought otherwise. It was perfect timing because I was exhausted. The unusual presence seemed to want to enter inside me and take over! Sensing my weakness, the feeling got stronger and stronger becoming extremely forceful. Fear had gripped me in its horrific paw! A paralyzing feeling consumed my entire body.

Just when I felt I couldn’t resist no longer, something deep within my being welled up from the depths of me. I desperately told the Being it had no right to possess me or to communicate through me but a feeling of recognition came to me. It was Kevin the guy in the car crash whose funeral I had attended a month before. He was just trying to enter the Earth Plain. It was unbelievable what was happening I struggled with the frightening experience but I felt Kevin simply wanted to speak to his best friend Craig who was in the room with us. A deep feeling of sadness for Kevin rushed through me but I had to acknowledged him and spoke to him gently saying, look after us be our guardian not our enemy. A silent tear rolled down my cheek, I then simply blessed him with love and light and smiled at Kevin in my mind’s eye.

There was an eerie silence suddenly I felt that Kevin had taken on board what I had said because the forceful presents released its deathly grip! A huge weight was lifted off me I felt like I could breathe again. He had been frightened and confused caught between this world and the next in a kind of limbo not knowing what to do! This was a turning point! The inner strength that had welled up inside me had changed me from a boy to a man, in reality this time. I had a feeling of resilience and quiet confidence. It seems in life we are given lessons to learn and challenges to face in order to grow and develop understanding.

CHAPTER 3 THE WARM-HEARTED ITALIAN FAMILY

The next day we were on the road again, this time heading for Rome. There was a sense of adventure as we traveled through some beautiful countryside. We stopped at some wonderful little cafes and enjoyed the cuisine.

Finally we arrived outside Rome and stayed at a charming camping ground. An Italian family ran the place there were-two beautiful daughters, a classic Italian ‘momma’ and a little old Italian father who was totally out-gunned by his daughters and his big beaming wife.

What a place, but sadly there was no room. What were we to do?

One of the Italian girls came over to see us and spoke to me. She had long black curly hair and deep brown eyes. Her name was Alca. I introduced myself hi I’m Alistair Bluestone she smiled. I explained our desperate situation for accommodation and Alca suggested that we put up an awning in the orchard. I took to the task with gusto, tying the awning to the apple trees. Finally there was enough cover for us and we settled down for the night.

I crashed out like a light switch in a power cut! I slept deeply and didn’t wake until morning. We woke up lying in the shade of the apples trees amongst the deep green grass it was such a beautiful setting. It was summer and there was a humming sound as the bees did their thing.

I leapt out of bed and went straight to the café for breakfast.

Everybody else was getting served except me. What was the problem? I wondered.

Did I smell that bad? I probably did need a shower! This did not really explain the lack of service. At that moment a look from Alca pierced me. It was both sad and angry but tried as I might I could not guess the cause. She eventually marched up to my table and stood, hands on hips, staring at me!

Your friends come last night, break into the café! she said angrily. My Dad heard the noise and came to see what is happening. One of your friends, he sat on the floor with chip packets everywhere, muttering to himself. Another steal a bottle of alcohol and ran off grabbing his friend from the floor on the way out.

The lads drunk again and up to no good. I couldn’t believe this had happened after the kindness the family had shown us, allowing us to stay although the site was full.

Life is full of curved-balls and these two so-called friends were out of line!

Right, I said, I’ll talk to them and get them to apologize if it’s the last thing I do.

I was mad at these two idiots! How could they break the trust the Italian family had given us?

    The lessons were coming thick and fast. Just when everything is going smoothly, along comes another obstacle. But there is another possibility;

Could this obstacle be in fact a gift, a precious gemstone like those I collected as a child, a thing to be cherished and used as a tool to gain greater insight into the complexity of life’s problems?

In a flashback to boyhood, I remembered a chance meeting with an Indian mystic. From a far of land full of secrets that walked to the beat of a different drum. With the most amazing eyes I have ever seen who said we were merely actors on the stage of life, caught in the web of our daily dramas.

The boys were asleep, snoring like a group of piglets, still recovering from a hard night on the hops. I shouted at them but they just rolled over with mumbles and groans, obviously hung-over. Loud sounds aren’t much fun when your head is beating like drum!

Come on get up! I cried. Which one of you guys stole the bottle of alcohol?

What are you talking about? One of them muttered.

You know exactly what I’m talking about Andy, don’t deny it, I insisted.

Alright, alright! was the reply, the hangover had reduced their resistance.

You give that bottle of alcohol back and apologize to the old man for breaking into his café, I demanded! Nick and Andy groaned and protested, but finally they sheepishly stood up, still wearing their clothes from last night’s shenanigans.

Nick and Andy moved slowly, like two prisoners of war, dragging their feet in protest. We arrived outside the café and I asked Alca to get her father. Embarrassed and holding their heads down, the boys tried to walk away but I stopped them.

At last the old man came out of the café.

You, boys, bad boys, you steal some alcohol!

Sorry, muttered the perpetrators. We shouldn’t have done it Andy said. Here’s your bottle of alcohol back. The old man stared at them for awhile, and then said, All right then," walked off.

We silently walked back to our make-shift accommodation. The boys weren’t in a talking mood and just lay around recovering from last night’s antics.

I decided to go for a walk to look around the place. As I walked about taking in the Sights, sounds and smells of the Italian countryside, I noticed a distant figure walking towards me. It was Alca, the young Italian girl.

Oh no! What’s up this time? I wondered. Soon she was standing in front of me with a smile on her face. Thank you Alistair for getting your two friends to apologize to my Papa. She said. He is a lot happier now."

Phew! What a relief! This was certainly a positive outcome to a sticky situation.

She walked off, glancing back with a cute smile. I meandered back to the camp site where the boys were up and showing signs of recovery. We all sat down and went over the crazy antics of last night. We all started laughing at how Nick, one of the lads who broke into the café, must have looked surrounded by chips, sitting on the floor muttering to himself like a madman.

A shout came from the direction of the café. It was Mamma with arms waving beckoning us to come over. Pasta! Pasta! she shouted.

Our ears pricked up and we ran across the ground like hungry young wolves to answer Mamma’s warm-hearted invitation. She gave us all a big hug.

My boys, you need pasta. Come! Come! I sort you out. she beamed at us.

When we walked inside, the two girls and Papa were sitting down drinking vino.

They smiled then suddenly broke into laughter at the sight of the two perpetrators.

Sit ! Sit! We have lots of food! Have some wine my boys, shouted Papa.

What amazing warm-hearted people the Italians are, taking us in and forgiving our bad behaviour. We had a ball; talking, laughing and becoming part of the extended family. This was an initiation into the passion and love for life that flowed through this beautiful Italian family, showing the rich family-centred lifestyle at the heart of the Italian people.

As the night went on, Alca’s sister, a gypsy-like girl with sharp penetrating eyes, asked if we would like her to read our fortunes. Although we laughed at her suggestion, we all thought it sounded like fun so we gathered round and listened to what she had to say. She sat there staring intently at one of the boys. Words flowed from her saying, "When you were younger you lived on a farm and had no TV and you had many brothers and sisters. Andy just sat there a stunned look on his face wondering how she could know this information. It was accurate and he did have five brothers and sisters! Andy shook his head in disbelief he was spooked by the strange gypsy girl. Andy quickly moved out onto the porch for a break with a freaked out look in his eye!

The gypsy girl swiveled in her seat glancing at me with a deep penetrating steer wanting to enter my scared mind.

I purposely sat there in fearful silence, not wanting to give anything away! A deep uneasy glazed expression jumped into her eyes.

This one has had some strange experiences, magical things have happened and more will occur in the future she predicted. The boys started to laugh at me.

Sure! sure! they teased. He’s just a bit crazy, that’s all. Her penetrating steer bored into me as the lads laughter echoed in my ears. I felt very uneasy at what she had said for some reason and turned my gaze away to get away from those penetrating eyes!

We were all starting to get tired, so we decided to hit the hay and it was a good excuse to leave the frightful Gypsy girl’s ominous presence.

CHAPTER 4 THE GANGSTER DANNY BOY

The next morning we all packed up and got ready to leave this beautiful, hospitable place.

It was hard leaving such lovely people we said our goodbyes and waved out of the van window. I always think it’s best to never overstay your welcome.

This journey was nearly at an end. The kilometers ticked by and after an extremely long drive we arrived at night back at our home away from home, right in the middle of London city. We were exhausted after traveling all day and went to bed and slept solidly for the whole night.

The next day we were getting ready to leave and to go back to New Zealand. Although we had been away for a few months, the time had passed quickly. Suddenly a flashback of the mysterious gypsy sister of Alca haunted my thoughts? A deep shiver went down my spine remembering her words there will be more magical things happening in the future. What had she meant by those ominous words would I be alright?

On our last night, our next door neighbour popped over to see us. Danny Boy was a black guy with dreadlocks and a mischievous twinkle in his eye. We thought he probably dealt in drugs because his door never stopped opening and closing all hours of the day and night.

At first suspicious of him because of his drug dealing, but his infectious charm overpowered us all. He had a remarkable knack of summing people up. Once when we were all sitting at the table, he looked at Craig and said, You like your food, love! We all cracked up. Next he said to Dave, You don’t like black men do you me love. Dave’s face dropped to the floor in shock.

Danny Boy was bang on the money! He told Nick that he had a good brain and to Andy, You love to talk me lovely!

At last he got to me, smiled and said, "You’re pretty cool, aren’t you me lovely! All the lads rolled their eyes at me and burst out laughing. Believe it or not, I could see the good in this hard case guy. He had this very narrow room next door with a bench that ran along the wall for his picture framing business. He had this beautiful big black Rottweiler that barked at anybody that stepped out of line.

What Danny Boy used to do, was to pop over, grab me and take me to the other side of London to this posh area of town because he had a girlfriend over there. Her dad hated Danny Boy so Danny would get me to knock on the door. Her Dad would answer the door and I would smile and chat for a while till Danny’s girlfriend came out and off we would go.

Where is the little bugger? she would say, and smile when she saw him.

Danny Boy kept saying he wanted to visit us in New Zealand and although I was not enthusiastic about this idea I just smiled and agreed with his wishes.

The next day it was time to leave London and fly home.

CHAPTER 5 THE EAGLE SEEKS THE DEEPEST BLUE

At last we touched down in the Land of the Long White Cloud and I was glad to be home. After catching up with my folks, I slept as if I would never wake up. In the morning the birds were chirping, the sun was beaming and it was spring, the perfect season for new beginnings.

I resumed my yogic practice which consisted of an hour of poses and meditation. As I was meditating in my room, I was surprised to notice, through half-closed eyes, a pink glow emanating from around the edge of my surf board. Pink signifies divine love and immediately brought back the memory of that special meditation with the Indian mystic long ago. That night had a profound effect on me and still is crystal clear in my mind’s eye. For a few moments I wondered about this until I looked out the window and all such thoughts vanished from my mind.

What a day! It’s time to take the surfboard for a whirl. I drove out to the beautiful West Coast with its lush bush, waterfalls and beaches full of iron sand.

I arrived at my favourite beach, Piha. It’s an amazing place with spectacular views and a huge monolithic rock towering above the beach. It stands alone against the wild waves of the West Coast and gives the impression of a enormous lion, hence the name Lion’s Rock.

Buzzing with excitement, because it was so long since I’d been surfing, I waxed the board up and headed out there like a school kid in a candy shop!

As I paddled out in the surf, a bizarre feeling came over me. It was as if something was watching me! The presents seemed to be surrounding me a creepy feeling engulfed me. I had surfed at Piha many times but this was the first time I had encountered this haunting presents. A deep feeling welled up inside me evoking ancient memories of this place, perhaps when the indigenous Maori Tribe inhabited the area. Was I picking up on something, or was it just my imagination?

A large wave overtook me and these strange thoughts disappeared as I was caught up again in the joy and fun of surfing! It was good to reconnect with the ocean again. I surfed a wave in and drifted slowly ashore. It’s funny how you always feel better when you’ve been in the ocean!

Feeling at peace with the world after that ancient haunting feeling of something watching me, I walked up the beach towards my car. A Maori girl was lying on the beach catching a few rays of sunshine and I smiled at her as I passed. She gave me an unusual disconcerting look! What was that look for? Oh well, you can’t win them all. Not everybody is going to be friendly. I walked down to the takeaway shop to feed the hunger and thirst that had sprung upon me. The order took a while, so I perched up on the wall like a hungry seagull, waiting to be fed.

It was one of those classic West Coast days, not a cloud in the sky and the sun was blazing hot. There was a light off-shore breeze, and perfect peeling waves, about four feet high, rolling in. As I sat there, transfixed by the splendor of this magnificent place, abruptly the same dark feeling crept over me. It was very similar to the one I had earlier, when I paddled out for a surf. Something was watching me again! Why am I getting this creepy sensation I pondered.

Suddenly the Maori girl I had seen on the beach earlier, appeared. She was tall with an athletic build and, as she came closer, I could see her sparkling green eyes. Those eyes were eerie and disconcerting and appeared to gaze right through me. I felt like a little animal caught in the headlights of an on-coming car!

Hopefully she wasn’t going to run me over.

Instead she jumped up on the fence and perched next to me. Good surf out there today I saw you before coming back from your surf you seemed really happy. she said.

Sure was! I replied. I haven’t been surfing for a few months because I’ve been away from New Zealand. It’s great to be back in God’s own!" I spoke enthusiastically.

Where did you travel to? she enquired.

I went on a Rugby tour around Europe and then a few of us did some more traveling. I replied. Sounds like fun! I’ve never been overseas; I’ve just lived around here all my life. I feel part of this place. My ancestors came from here. They were the local tribe who used to fish, hunt and grow crops around Piha. She responded.

Wow that’s a coincidence! I said in surprise. Today when I paddled out to sea I had a funny feeling like something was watching me and I had a flashback to a time when a tribe used to live here long ago."

All of a sudden, a wild wind blew at my back and ruffled my hair.

When you feel that wind, she spoke quietly, that’s my ancestors, the guardians of this place. They are speaking to you.

I sat in silence staring at Lion’s Rock towering out of the sea. After a while she said My name is Aroha which means’ Love’ in Maori.

    Hi, I’m Alistair, I replied

You’re quite a different sort of guy. she murmured, staring into my eyes with that penetrating look. I’m a healer, she continued, and I help people on Life’s journey, giving them strength to re-connect with their inner self and to become more in tune with nature.

Then Aroha told me this amazing story about her people.

"A long time ago, my ancestors used to live here in harmony with Tangaroa, the god of the sea and Tane Mahuta, god of the forest. They also lived in harmony with each other.

One day another tribe came over the Waitakere Ranges. A band of warriors came down to Piha. All the women and children were rushed up lion’s Rock which was a Pa site with fortified fences in the old days.

Our warriors fought a battle at the foot of Lion’s Rock.

Hand to hand combat a violent fierce bloodthirsty battle with many warriors dying. The blood spilled on the black iron sand at the foot of the Lion’s rock.

Although the local Piha warriors fought with bravery and courage, they faced overwhelming odds and were hopelessly out numbered.

Eventually they were killed or taken down to the caves at North Piha and burnt alive.

The women on top of Lion’s Rock saw what had happened and realized that their men had been killed. An unusual thing happened that the warriors from the other tribe did not expect. Rather than be raped or put into slavery, the women and children all jumped off Lion’s rock to their deaths.

Not giving the warriors what they were after, meant it was a hollow victory. That is why there are so many guardian spirits here, because of the tragedy that occurred at Piha!

She had just finished the story, when a shout came from the takeaway shop that our orders were ready. We collected our orders and walked down to the beach where we nestled into the sandy curves of the sand dunes to enjoy our food. I stared at Lions Rock unable to get the gruesome story out of my mind.

Finally Aroha spoke, I’ve got a special place I would like to take you.

What kind of place? I replied still a little frightened from the story.

‘It’s a temple over the hill in KariKari an amazing place and anyone can go there because it’s open to all people of all religions twenty four hours a day,’ she answered.

I thought it sounded fascinating. It was located at the next beach around the coast, so off we drove, up the steep winding hill looking down on the majestic blue ocean disappearing towards the horizon. Excitement grew within us, as Aroha stepped on the accelerator along a narrow gravel road, fringed on each side by deep green bush, until we came upon a flat space to park.

Together we walked silently towards the temple which could be seen perched at the top of a hill. As I approached the entrance, to my right was a statue of Jesus and to the left a statue of Buddha. What a beautiful combination! It was unusual as people are often opposed to different religions being mixed. At the front was a plaque saying anyone who is following a spiritual path may enter, no matter what religion, creed or philosophy.

To be able to accept another’s religion and welcome them with open arms, shows great depth of understanding!

We walked into the temple noticing that the floor was made of highly polished golden wood. The temple was eight-sided and had a dome protruding from the top with a golden painted bulb pointing directly into the middle. It was suspended above an intricately carved alter which was eight-sided like the room. Each of the eight parts contained a symbol of a different religious faith. On the table was a statue of Shiva, the Indian god, the Creator. Beside him was Ganesh, his son, carved out of rose quartz symbolizing divine love.

Ganesh is the elephant god and apparently helps to remove obstacles, perhaps those obstacles that stop us respecting each others religious beliefs. This temple, however, was an inspiring example of honouring different spiritual beliefs.

The temple had the most amazing view looking straight out to sea, so we sat in perfect silence, gazing at the horizon disappearing into infinity. There was a calm energy in the temple which heightened our awareness.

I descended into a deep meditation that seemed to give me inner peace and brought a smile deep within me! When I opened my eyes I saw Aroha reading a card she had taken from a box on the table. She looked at me in silence so I walked over to check out this magical card that she held out to me. It read, The eagle seeks the deepest Blue. Whatever you love, seek it and you will always find happiness. What an amazing quote! It struck a chord within me. As I turned around looking out towards the beautiful blue ocean, a hawk soared pasted into the deepest blue of the sky. What a vision to live your life by!

Reluctantly we took our leave from the temple, this place of authentic hope for mankind’s struggles on the physical plain. Darkness was rapidly approaching as we drove along the narrow winding road back
