About this ebook

Lady Jocelyn Rathbourne was taken in by a pretty face and even prettier lies, leaving her family's reputation at stake. When the man who made promises to her announces his engagement to another woman, she knows the only way to avoid a scandal is to marry the cad's brother, the cold, formidable Duke of Calydon.

Sebastian Thornton, the Duke of Calydon, is in need of a wife. Bored with the simpering ladies and overly-forward seductresses populating the ton, Sebastian longs to find a woman with fire and spirit. He never expected the perfect candidate to barge into his home, aim a derringer at his heart, and demand he marry her...

Each book in the Scandalous House of Calydon series is a standalone, full-length story that can be enjoyed out of order.

Stacy Reid

I am an avid reader of novels with a deep passion for writing. I especially love romance and adore writing about people falling in love. I live a lot in the worlds I create and I actively speak to my characters (out loud). I have a warrior way “never give up on my dream.” When I am not writing, I spend a copious amount of time drooling over Rick Grimes from Walking Dead, watching Japanese Anime and playing video games with my love. I also have a horrible weakness for Ice cream. :)

This novella of a little over 100 pages is an enjoyable romance with likable characters with complex back stories. Jocelyn charges into Sebastian’s life with gun drawn. His attraction to her causes him to finally accept his duty as a Duke to marry and provide a heir. While Sebastian comes from a dysfunctional family that has scarred him for a healthy marriage, Jocelyn is trying to recreate the very close family relationship that she had when her mother lived. These contrasting personalities make the story heartfelt and believable. I received this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is my 11th book by this author and the first 2 star. It's short and kind of bland, but I might have still rounded up or something, but on top of that I didn't really 'buy' any of it. The heroine is a nutter, and the hero is dukely and pretty much nothing else. And, almost all of their choices are very questionable. I'm glad that at least it was short. This is a rocky start, but I'm going to continue with the series.

I’d view this book as a novella. It had great potential and I enjoyed the plot but it was all way too rushed for me. I felt it could have been fleshed out more to give it depth. But a good quick read.

I’ve read 2 other books by this author and loved them so I was rather disappointed by this book. I mean it’s only 116 pages and I didn’t even finish it. I just didn’t like the main characters. AT ALL. So the the heroine, Jocelyn goes to the duke to force his brother to marry her. She tells him he’s compromised her and promised marriage. From what I gather they shared a few chaste kisses but were more friends then anything and marriage was never actually promised (I think that’s what happened it was a little vague at this point). What a conniving, selfish woman. I mean I get that she’s doing it for her family but essentially she’s planning to trap a “friend” into marriage to save her and her families butts. When in all accounts from her father and the duke she is a stunningly beautiful woman. Surely she could get a marriage without deceit. So I didn’t like her or sympathies with her at all.
Then there’s the duke. Wow. He is a cold hearted, aggressive, uncaring man of the ton. I mean seriously. They’ve known each other for a day. He knows she’s never really kissed anyone and he is so rough and uncaring about it being her first time having sex. I mean I’m reading this and thinking it I wasn’t reading from her perspective and she didn’t come right out and say she enjoyed it, it felt and read an awful lot like rape.

Alright, so as far as rash decisions went, this perhaps wasn't the wisest course of action. But Lady Jocelyn Rathbourne's will had to remain strong. After all, desperate times called for desperate measures. If the only way to save her family's estate and reputation was to aim a derringer pistol at the Duke of Calydon, then so be it. For Lady Jocelyn demands satisfaction - and she will have it at any cost. Even if it means demanding the hand of the dark and foreboding Duke himself. But Jocelyn has made the first move against a very dangerous opponent...For Sebastian Thornton is no callow youth to be trifled with. And the lady has just played her hand. Now, it's his turn...Sebastian is in need of a wife. And to find a wife with such spirit and fire - even if she means to only marry him for his money - would be a great prize indeed. He intends to thoroughly take his pleasure with her...and demands his own satisfaction in return.First of all, I must say that I wasn't entirely sure what to expect when I read this book. The title is intriguing, and actually is what first captured my attention. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story, though. For its length, I found the plot and characters to be very well-developed. I give this book a definite A! and I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.
