About this ebook

The experience of falling under the power is increasing across the globe in most Christian denominations. Evangelical, Orthodox, Pentecostal and Charismatic churches are seeing revivals and stirrings of the Spirit that are accompanied by shaking, screaming, shouting in tongues, falling under the power, rolling on the floor, dancing in the Spirit, holy laughter and other forms of physical manifestations of the Spirit. While some believers cherish these experiences and look forward to them at the least opportunity, others frown on them and even detest them.
Several instances of falling under the power occur in the Bible. In many of the recorded instances of falling under the power in New Testament, Jesus Christ was the intermediary between God and those who had that experience. He is still in our midst doing the same things He did when He was on earth. The resurrected Lord is still making people fall under the power through the power of the Holy Ghost.

    INTRODUCTION

The experience of falling under the power is increasing across the globe in most Christian denominations. The Evangelical, Orthodox, Pentecostal and Charismatic churches are seeing revivals and stirrings of the Spirit that are accompanied by shaking, screaming, shouting in tongues, falling under the power, rolling on the floor, dancing in the Spirit, holy laughter and other forms of physical manifestations of the Spirit. While some believers cherish these experiences and look forward to them at the least opportunity, others frown on them and even detest them.

Falling under the power is known by other names such as being slain in the Holy Ghost, falling before the Lord and resting in the Spirit. More books and articles have been written against this experience than for it. More preachers preach against it than for it. I am not surprised about the rejection this controversial experience suffers because it is difficult to explain. The kind of falling under the power we see on most occasions today is not exactly what we see in the Bible. There is widespread abuse of the phenomenon of falling under the power, as those who crave this experience erroneously think that it is a sure sign that the Holy Ghost is at work. Such people believe that God cannot move without the physical manifestation of falling under the power. There are reported cases of people faking falling under the power and incidents of preachers pushing people onto the floor. In spite of these excesses and lapses, it is wrong to write off the experience of falling under the power.

Falling under the power is the experience in which people fall to the ground voluntarily or involuntarily, with or without the accompanying manifestations of emotional ecstasy and bodily sensations, in the presence of God.

Voluntary falling before the Lord or voluntary prostration is the instance in which a person intentionally prostrates before God in worship or out of reverence. Involuntary falling before the Lord or involuntary prostration is the act of the Holy Ghost coming upon a person and making him or her fall face down, backwards or in any direction, due to the weakening effect of God’s power on him or her.

I must admit that, there are many instances where people fake the experience of falling under the power. Some people fall under the power just to please the minister. They fall to the floor because they think it puts the minister’s anointing in doubt if they don’t. Psychological manipulations are employed to make the victims of spiritual gimmicks fall under the power. Occult manifestations are also rampant around the world. These negative trends don’t justify the bitter attacks we launch against genuine ministers who seek to employ the power of the Holy Ghost to minister to those who need divine intervention. It is spiritually dangerous and unhealthy to accuse every preacher who ministers in the Spirit of practising hypnotism or mesmerism.

The manifestation of falling under the power is an experience we should explore and benefit from. Many of the people who fall under the power don’t have any biblical foundation for the experience. They have not studied the Word of God to find out what it says and they are not instructed to derive maximum benefit from the experience. One of the commonest mistakes those who fall under the power make is that, they think falling under the power automatically gives them miracles. People who fall under the power have to exercise faith in the Word of God just like those who don’t fall under the power. The experience is not a substitute to faith. Those who fall under the power must be holy to be blessed by the overwhelming influence of the Holy Ghost. If they fall under the power and still live in sin, God will not bless them.

A casual observation of the spreading experience of falling under the power suggests strongly that no amount of criticism or attacking of the experience can stop it. I suggest we use our energies to discover the depths of the Word of God concerning falling under the power and other spiritual experiences.

This book is a modest attempt to explain some occurrences of falling under the power and the spiritual benefits that come from it. I will also suggest some things the Body of Christ can do to minimise the excesses involved in this experience. Falling under the power is a blessing when it is experienced in conjunction with other essentials of the Christian faith. If we disobey the Word of God and discard the principles of decency and order, falling under the power can lead to confusion in the Body of Christ. We must remember that occult groups and false religions also experience some kinds of falling under the power, fainting and emotional ecstasies. These experiences by themselves therefore don’t always mean the Holy Ghost is at work.

The Body of Christ today derives its liberty to embrace falling under the power from the Bible and the experiences in various revivals that have taken place over the last few centuries. Why is it biblical to fall under the power? It is because the Bible records instances of falling under the power. It
