    Introduction

    Discouragement is a wave that is sweeping across the world and flooding people’s hearts. The rate of suicide is increasing in many societies. Psychiatric homes are being filled with victims of circumstances they cannot control. Thousands of people are freezing emotionally because of discouragement. fear is ravaging hearts and anxiety is making it impossible for many to fulfil their destinies. Discouragement is seizing people whether they are great or small and spiritual and unspiritual people are going through times of discouragement.

    One gloomy morning, when I was in the bathroom trying to clean up, a weight of heaviness overwhelmed my heart. I had not felt that way in many years. It occurred to me that millions of people around the world were also in the same mental and emotional state I was in that morning. I remembered what Isaiah wrote about Jesus Christ, that he was a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief who carried the grief and pain of the world. When spiritual people feel pain or grief, it may be that they are bearing their own pain or that of others.

    3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

    4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

    Isaiah 53:3-5

    I have personally experienced the grace of God in difficult times and I can assure you that what you are going through at the moment cannot destroy you. The grace of God has sustained my family and ministry in amazing ways through challenges. Many people who go through trials and temptations use our experiences to encourage themselves. No matter the level of discouragement you face you can forge ahead.

    If your faith is tested and you can’t run as you used to do, walk. If you can’t walk, limp along. If you can’t limp, crawl and if you can’t crawl, roll. Handle suffering with so much style and dignity that others would envy you and wish to take your place. You can choose to look beautiful or battered in suffering – choose the former.

    I was in the middle of writing a book entitled Building a Solid Church when the Holy Ghost impressed it on my spirit to write this book to address the issue of discouragement. I completed that manuscript and started writing this one, Breaking the Spirit of Discouragement. I trust that the Lord will use this book to lift you out of the pit of discouragement – the spirit of discouragement will be broken in your life by the time you finish reading it.

    The need to be encouraged in the times we live in is comparable with that of the Church in Apostle Paul’s time. The believers of that time were discouraged due to the apparent delayed return of the Lord Jesus Christ. Some of them died without witnessing the Second Coming of Jesus Christ and that made those who were alive feel the Lord had disappointed them. The apostle assured them that though they felt disappointed, they were victorious through the Lord Jesus Christ. He also admonished them to be steadfast and immovable in their faith in Christ.

    57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

    58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

    1 Corinthians 15:57-58

    To understand the state many of us find ourselves in, it is important to discuss what discouragement means. The Oxford dictionary defines discouragement as the loss of confidence or enthusiasm. It is a state of dispiritedness. In a state of discouragement, a previously enthusiastic person loses momentum and becomes stagnant.

    Discouragement is the lack of courage to face life. It is mental cowardice. This state of inactivity may be as a result of circumstances beyond your control but God expects and empowers you to fight on.

    If you are discouraged you may be tempted to stop moving. You could move backwards and in extreme cases embark on a mission to destroy what you have built. Discouragement leads to derailment. Many believers leave their God-given mission and embark on other missions they think are easier to handle. The depression that can result from discouragement may lead to a condition of hypertension or heart attack.

    The prophet Isaiah described the state of discouragement in Isaiah 61:1-3. According to the prophet of restoration, discouragement is associated with conditions like broken-heartedness, feeling of captivity, spiritual imprisonment, spiritual mourning, the spirit of heaviness and a state of ashes. The mission of Jesus Christ, the Messiah, is to reverse the state of discouragement.

    1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;

    2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

    3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

    Isaiah 61:1-3

    The Body of Christ must face the issue of discouragement squarely. We cannot ignore this agent of destruction as it creeps into our lives and destroys the good things we build. We feel too embarrassed to admit that we are discouraged. Those who admit to discouragement are regarded as not having faith in God. Pretence is rife among believers as we pretentiously sing aloud in the name of praising God. The way to defeat discouragement is to admit its existence and liberate believers to talk about their experiences without feeling inferior.

    It is possible to come out of the pit of discouragement because the Word of God provides us with the wisdom and power to deal with it. To overcome this spirit, we must disabuse our minds of the notion that discouragement only trails people who are either failures or sinful. Righteous and successful individuals rule out any possibilities of discouragement until they are taken by surprise. Knowing that godly and successful people experience challenging times helps us to deal with the things we go through.

    Joshua is an example of a godly man who had to deal with discouragement. Moses was Joshua’s mentor and Israel’s leader. After Moses’ death, Joshua had every reason to be discouraged. In view of Moses’ standing with God, it looked impossible to replace him as a prophet and leader, but the LORD encouraged Joshua to be of good courage and take the people of Israel into the Promised Land.

    1 Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,

    2 Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.

    3 Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.

    4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.

    5 There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

    6 Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their Fathers to give them.

    7 Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.

    8 This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

    9 Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be
