Introduction: Starting the adventure
Life is either a great adventure, or nothing.
—Helen Keller
You downloaded this book for a reason. Maybe it was simple curiosity—you’ve heard about acupuncture and Chinese medicine, or your co-worker told you it helped with her migraines, or maybe her chronic low back pain.
You know you are sick and tired of doctors either not having the time to listen to you, or telling you it’s all in your head
or you need to relax
, without giving you tools and ideas to integrate into your life.
Maybe you have a parent living with you, and you are taking care of your kids, AND you have a full-time job on top of that. You want to be healthier; you want to make better choices. You are overwhelmed and unable to decide where to begin.
Maybe you are further down this road—you have a chronic pain or illness, and the idea that you could become more functional is a stretch. You just want to be able to do your job, handle your life, and not fall down. You are so TIRED of being tired all the time. The thought of change is more than overwhelming; it exhausts you.
To all of you, I say: welcome. You are about to embark on a journey to wellness that will be a great adventure. You will discover how to not only get healthy, but also how to stay that way. You’ll learn tools to manage your stress, create boundaries in your life, and look at food and movement as ways to help yourself. You’ll finish this book with a clear idea not only of tools you can implement TODAY to get your health on the right track, but also with an idea of what Chinese medicine is all about, why acupuncture is such a powerful modality for someone with your conditions, and what to do next. Best of all, none of this will be a struggle. This isn’t a boot camp or a temporary fix; it is a real way to change your health and improve your life for the better. How can I say that? I’ve been where you are.
