About this ebook
Maybe you're cooking everything because your collie has colitis or your Akita has a wheat allergy or your older dog just isn't thriving on commercial kibble. Maybe you're mixing up the occasional biscuit or treat to help your best fur-bearing friend over that I-just-ate-a-tennis- ball-and-don't-feel-so-good episode. Whatever the reason, the recipes in this book (which have been approved by dog trainer and nutritional consultant Stacy Alldredge) will satisfy the most discerning doggie palate. Many of them, in fact, can be shared with a favorite human (though preferably not from the same dish).
Illustrated with more than 50 endearing black-and-white photographs of Cooper and friends by Cami Johnson, and liberally seasoned with stories, quotes, and nutrition tips, Throw Me a Bone makes a dog's dinner something to look forward to.

To be honest, I never wanted to be a writer. I was perfectly happy being who I am—a very handsome Welsh springer spaniel (if I do say so myself!) in the prime of my life, busy doing the things I like to do—scratching my ears, strategizing squirrel ambushes, and napping. But I can no longer sit by passively and ignore the situation that has plagued my species since we became humankind’s best friends.
In a word (or two): Dog Food.
I am prepared to address this situation and educate you humans, and in particular the forty million of you Americans who live with one or more of my brethren. Herewith, I present to you this guide to cooking good, healthy, tasty food for your dog.
I know, I know: you don’t even cook for yourself, so why would you want to cook for your dog? And what about all that prepackaged stuff, those kibbles and nibbles and chunks and chow that you are sure are just fine for Spot and Bosco? And what if you cook something that the dog doesn’t like, or is bad for the dog, or … or … or …
People, please! Sit! Stay! Okay, now let’s get down to business. I can tell you this much: You will enjoy learning how to cook for your best friend. Your dog will love you for it. Everyone, and everydog, will be very happy once they try the recipes I’ve included here. Peace will reign, bellies will be full, life will be good. I promise.
There is ample evidence that you people love us dogs (what’s not to love?). In the last several years, humans have displayed an admirable new consciousness about better quality pet food: I’m sure you’ve noticed all those premium, all-natural commercial foods that are now available, as well as healthy treats and snacks. But we dogs talk (wait—are you surprised??) and what we talk about (besides cats, new smells, and baseball) is how our humans treat us. In the last two years (okay, I’ll admit it: I’m only two, but still …) what I’ve been hearing is that more and more humans are starting to prepare home cooked meals for their animals. In some cases, it’s because they love their dogs and prefer the better quality of the food they can give them (have you ever eaten commercial dog food? I rest my case). In other cases, it’s for health reasons—someone’s Collie has colitis, perhaps, or their Akita has a wheat allergy. Often, it’s someone who has a dog in his or her senior years who isn’t thriving on dull, dry, commercial kibble.
Some of you humans (ladies and gents, I raise my paw to
