    About the Author

    Introduction

Do you, Menopause, take thee, Kathy, as your awful-wedded wife? Do you swear to take her life and turn it upside down and toss it all around? At the very least, will you take her body and render it unrecognizable from this day forward? Do you promise to drive her to the brink of distraction for as long as you both can stand it? Good. Now you’re stuck with each other, so make it work.

I took this vow with menopause not long after I took my marriage vows with my husband.

The timing kind of sucked, which is why I decided I needed to find some solutions. I started researching the best options for hormone replacement, how to deal with mood swings, night sweats, weight gain—all those hazy, crazy things that happen when our hormones change. Fortunately for me, the hot flashes led to some cool insights.

I implemented what I learned, my life changed, and now I want to share everything with you. Because I believe that it’s not just about being okay with who we are; it’s about being amazed with who we are, what we can do, and how good we can feel. So, if menopause has you feeling like a hot mess, join me. Squeeze yourself into a pair of Spanx and together we will have you feeling like a Hot Flashionista in no time. I promise!

I have written this book with you in mind. I am passionate about bringing humor, inspiration, and valuable information to the heart and spirit of women everywhere. As your self-appointed Chief Mojo Officer, I’m committed to helping you experience a menopause transition that is hot (in a good way), happy, and healthy! There is a reason they call it the change of life. May yours be a change, not just for the better, but for the best ever!

This book is a labor of love that I gave birth to after many, many months of self-imposed contractions and expansions. If any of you have written a book, then you know what I mean. There were days when the words and the creativity flowed like a beautifully clear mountain stream. Then, there were those days when the three-headed monster of fear, doubt, and insecurity got me in its grip and wouldn’t let go.

Those monster days are the ones when we hold on tight to the white-hot truth that this too shall pass. That tomorrow may be the day it all comes together in marvelous fashion. That character building is under construction, and we know in our hearts what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. That everyone, absolutely everyone, has obstacles to overcome along the way. No one gets off easy on the journey to becoming the fullest expression of their truest self. It’s that one more push, just when we think we just can’t push anymore, that delivers us.

My hope is that this book serves you, soothes you, and maybe even makes you laugh out loud a little. May it be a source of inspiration and information that you benefit from, even if it’s just one teeny weeny thing. One small thing can make a huge difference.

It is my honor to have you hold this book in your hands. You see, I believe that you have all the wisdom you need within you already. Sure, I can provide you with some details on surface stuff you may not already know. But the deeper stuff, it’s in you, baby! I am merely your reminder, telling you to wake up from the amnesia of your awesomeness, to trust your gut and get going on your magnificent, mind-blowing menopausal transition!

Thank you for welcoming me into your world. I now welcome you into mine. Together, let’s make menopause suck less and rock more. We deserve it, darlings!

Hot flash love and a high-five,

    Kathy

    Chapter One

    Survey Says ...

I love knowing what makes women tick. So, being the research geek that I am, I surveyed over 150 women across the country for this book. Women were asked about midlife and menopause and much more. My intention was to branch out and stray a bit from the typical menopause and hormones discussion. There are plenty of books out there that cover those topics thoroughly. My broad-minded approach (pun intended) was to bring together information and advice on varying topics that affect us all. The questions ranged from asking women to share not only their fears and foibles, but also their hopes and dreams and the advice they would give to others.

Holy hot flash! I was pleasantly surprised at some of the answers and perfectly shocked by others. The purpose in sharing these results with you is for you to see what other women are thinking and feeling. We are all in this together. You are not alone and you are not going crazy. We are a divine sisterhood of yo-yo hormones, and together we will triumph over the tribulations.

Here are some of the results. A wee bit later, I’ll spill some of the essay answers that floored me.

Do you view the term midlife in a positive or negative way?

    Positive 65%

    Negative 20%

    Other 15%

I was encouraged to see that most women view it positively. It is a tricky term, though, wouldn’t you agree? The term has mostly been used to describe a middle-aged guy having a midlife crisis who then proceeds to buy a Corvette and coerce a curvy blonde to curl up next to him. That’s obviously not at all what we’re talking about here. When I use the term midlife I’m referring more to a stage of life. As we baby boomers approach this stage of life (45 to 65) we are recreating what it means to stay vibrant, vital, and vivacious.

Do you have a positive or negative view on bioidentical hormone replacement therapy?

    Positive 18%

    Negative 20%

    Not Sure 62%

Wow, 62% of those surveyed were not sure and didn’t have enough information to warrant either a positive or negative view. This really surprised me. We need to fix that! I have benefitted from bioidentical hormone therapy since 2005. I cannot
