      Introduction

      A brief history of disasters

      The history of disaster is as old as mankind and it is a sad certainty that the bigger we get, the harder we seem to fall.

      Some disasters find a special place in history, from Noah’s flood to the Bhopal Disaster in India (in which a lethal cloud of toxic chemical killed and maimed many thousands of innocent, unprepared people). Most of us worldwide will have heard of the destruction of the World Trade Center in New York on September 11 2001 but everybody will have their own personal repository of some of the many disasters that have plagued us and will, it seems, inevitably continue to do so. Disasters are the stuff of media attention. Headlines broadcast them with almost gleeful delight no matter how much loss and suffering occur as a consequence of them. Some disasters are created by the media themselves or at least they have a major role in promulgating them. The News-International Phone Hacking Scandal is an excellent example! We look at media management later.

      Man-made and natural disasters

      It is useful to distinguish between the two in the sense that an angry nature, a so called ‘Act of God’ can be randomly inflicted upon us, sometimes without warning and completely unexpectedly. On the other hand, mankind
