    The Girl Outside My Window

    I knew it was wrong.

    But Jesus God in heaven, I could not stop looking at the fantastically built, bikini-clad woman sunbathing below my home office window.

    My neighbor was laying out on her roof deck with the reasonable expectation of privacy, but my half of the converted loft is newer and a story taller, giving me a clear view onto the roof decks of units one to six. Each condo has its own tiny individual deck containing an assortment of barbecue grills, umbrella tables, and lawn furniture.

    I found myself staring helplessly down at Hitomi Ito from unit three.

    She sprawled on a white plastic deck chair in a cherry red bikini several sizes too small for her, nude but for three smallish triangles of roughly equal size which accentuated the contours of her lush form.

    I’d helped her and her husband move in a year ago. I’d noticed her pregnancy at the mailbox kiosk in the front courtyard a few months later, and had also noticed her husband moving out one rainy morning a few months after that. Mrs. Suarez in number two, the unit adjacent to Hitomi’s, had confided in me that the arguments between the two had been loud and continuous. She whispered to me that she’d almost called the police on several occasions.

    Still, while Hitomi had been beautiful before the pregnancy, during it she had been luminous. It’s a cliche, the ‘glowing’ thing; in many cases pregnant women look puffy and tired, but not Hitomi. Pregnancy suited her.

    It had also, in the final trimester, made her absurdly top-heavy.

    She turned her head towards my window, her big, black sunglasses flashing in the midday sun. Her breasts were very large but natural looking, her bikini shored them up, creating impressive cleavage, with a good two inches of nude tanned flesh exposed below each of the red triangles.     Hitomi had always dressed like a young urban professional, fashionable, cute but demure, and so the bikini top seemed odd to me before I realized, she’d bought it before the pregnancy.
