    Chapter 1

She cowered in the bathroom, on the cold tile floor, and listened to the many gun shots being fired in the old home she’d lived in for less than one month.  She just turned twenty-six years of age and wondered if she’d see twenty-seven.  The smell began to filter underneath the bathroom door.  She hated that smell.  Most people go through their whole life and never smell those odors.  The last eight months, she’s smelled them on three different occasions, and now she never wanted to smell them ever again.  She never wanted to ever feel so terrified again.  Or again wonder if she would live to see the next day or not.

Suddenly the shots stopped.  She sat still and wondered if the good guys won or if the bad guys would silence her as soon as they found her.

Amy, you can come out.  Hurry, we have to leave, now! she heard Marshall Dean yell.

Still she sat there.  Was he forced to call her out, or was it finally over this time.  It would never be over, she thought.  They always seemed to find her.

Amy, please come out, we have to be going now, Marshall Dean hollered again.

Amy heard the sirens and figured it was finally safe to open the bathroom door.  When she did, she saw Marshall Dean leaned over Marshall Camp, who was bleeding from the abdomen.  Then the cops came through the front door with guns drawn.

We need an ambulance.  I’m a U.S. Marshall and so is this man on the floor, Marshall Dean yelled as he kept pressure on Marshall Camp’s wound.

Amy looked around the room and saw two more bodies.  She shuddered and asked herself if the body count would ever stop.

Marshall Dean was relieved of applying pressure to his partners wound by the paramedics when they arrived.  He looked at Amy and again told her they had to leave.

Grab the bag you were packing, and let’s go, He said.

She never knew where they would send her, or what her new name would be, but after the last shoot out she started making plans herself.  She had life insurance money from her parents and she took a large amount out of the bank before she got moved to her first new home.  She also cashed her paychecks and hid the money in a thick book that she hollowed out.  And she thought up a new name for herself, one that no one else knew.  In the past eight months she went from being Susan Adams, which was her birth name, to being Vicky Jackson, and now Amy Wilson.  She had no say in what name she had to go by or where she lived, but this time she would.

She grabbed her suitcase and followed Marshall Dean out to his car.  She knew the drill by now.  He’d take her to the Marshall’s offices and they’d work on issuing her a new identity, along with a new background story and driver’s license.  When that was completed, they’d put her on a bus, or train, or plane to somewhere else, where she’d be met by another Marshall and taken to her new home.  There she’d have to keep her cover story straight, keep the job they set up for her, and make sure she didn’t draw undo attention to herself in any way.

These last two times, she did everything they asked of her.  Hell, she didn’t want to die.  Yet, still the men found he, and bodies always ended up laid out on the floor, riddled with bullets.  Different men, different floors, in different towns and states. So she figured she’d be safer on her own.  Somehow, or some way, the bad guys always found her.  If she wanted to stay alive, she’d have to do it alone.

Amy listened to all that the Marshalls said and accepted her new identity and license, and then she waited until they told her where she was headed this time.

She was so tired of not having a permanent home, or friends that she could be herself with, or even a pet she could have for company.  She left all that behind her eight months ago.  Eight months ago, when she witnessed her parent’s murder in the small grocery store they owned.

After she buried her parents, she was held in safe houses until she testified against the men responsible.  She hadn’t gotten a clear look at the third gunman, but the other two she did identify, and they were sentenced to life in prison. It wouldn’t bring her parents back to her, but Amy felt they got what they deserved.  The third guy was still out there, and according to what little the Marshalls told her, the man was a distant relative to some high powered crime boss.

Hence, the Witness Protection Program where she spent the last four months.  But that was the last one for her.  She felt lucky to still be breathing.  She wanted a life where she didn’t have to look over her shoulder every minute, or be so careful of what she said and did.  She lost everything, and now she wanted some of those things back.  She wished she could have her parents back, but she knew that couldn’t happen, so the next best thing was what she planned.  She wanted control over her own life.  Control over where she lived and how she lived.

Amy, here’s your plane ticket.  You will fly to Los Angeles, with a stopover in Denver.  When you land in Denver, go directly to your gate that leaves for L.A.  Do not talk to anyone, just sit and wait to board your plane.  Marshall Stuart will meet your plane in L.A. and take you to your new home.  While you’re on the plane, try memorizing your new background and get used to your new name.  You life will depend on it.  Stay safe, and we’re sorry you’ve had such a hard time staying hidden.  If Marshall Camp and I wouldn’t have heard that your location could have been leaked, and if we didn’t show up to move you when we did, you wouldn’t be here now. Los Angeles is a big city and you can get lost easily there, which is what we’re hoping for, Marshall Dean said, as he shook her hand.

Another Marshal, whose name she didn’t bother catching, drove her to the airport and walked her to the security checkpoint before he left her.

She showed her new drivers license which matched up to her boarding pass, as she went through security.  From there she headed towards the closest women’s restroom, where she began the first part of her plan.

Earlier she packed a short black wig in her carry-on bag, along with a pair of fake glasses with black frames.  She also had some red and some green duct tape to disguise her luggage.  She decided to use the green now, and when she landed in Denver she’d use the red.  She’d also change over to the long red wig, and throw a jacket on to cover her shirt, the first chance she got after landing in Denver.

    She sat waiting
