Mind Mapping Secrets for Business Success - Katie Darden

Chapter 1

Introduction and Overview

Ever since elementary school I've recognized the importance of visual communication. I've also realized how little it was used - in our society and our educational system. And yet, studies continue to show that students have better retention of information that is presented and learned using both visual and verbal modes. And, that information that is linked both verbally and visually leads to not only better understanding, but to better integration and improved critical thinking as well.

People learn in different modalities, with visual being the most dominant, and verbal being second. Yet our educational system is focused almost entirely on the verbal modality, using written books to convey knowledge and written materials (essays, written tests, etc.) to provide feedback to the teachers. Kinesthetic (physical) activities are generally limited to sports and physical education classes. Unfortunately, the visual arts tend to be at the bottom of the list, and are often the first to be cut. But we are primarily visual learners, and leaving out the visual representational system means that we are short-changing ourselves.

In the early 1980s I took a course in speed reading. Part of the course included mind mapping as a way to structure notes from the reading. I hardly remember anything else from the class itself, but the mind mapping struck a cord and I've been using it ever since.

Mind mapping is a powerfully effective tool that can be used for a variety of things, including note taking, as well as organizing ideas and activities. Mind maps® use a visual or graphical representation of information and ideas, usually structured by categories or relationships. In fact, their main power is that they quickly and easily show relationships in a way that is easy to understand and remember.

The term mind map was first popularized by British pop psychology author and television personality Tony Buzan. The phrase mind map was trademarked by Buzan's company specifically for use in self-improvement educational courses in Great Britain and the United States.

According to Wikipedia:

Buzan's specific approach, and the introduction of the term mind map" arose during a 1974 BBC TV series he hosted, called Use Your Head. In this show, and companion book series, Buzan promoted his conception of radial tree, diagramming key words in a colorful, radiant, tree-like structure.

Buzan says the idea was inspired by Alfred Korzybski's general semantics as popularized in science fiction novels, such as those of Robert A. Heinlein and A.E. van Vogt. He argues that while traditional outlines force readers to scan left to right and top to bottom, readers actually tend to scan the entire page in a non-linear fashion. Buzan's treatment also uses then-popular assumptions about the functions of cerebral hemispheres in order to explain the claimed increased effectiveness of mind mapping over other forms of note making."

The use of diagrams that visually map information using branching or radial mapping actually goes back many centuries. Pictorial methods of recording knowledge and modeling systems have a long history in learning, brainstorming, memory, visual thinking, and problem solving by educators, engineers, psychologists, and others.

We all have our favorite methods of organizing our thoughts and reminding ourselves of what needs to be completed. Most of us are used to making lists - grocery lists, to do lists, Christmas card lists, etc. But lists themselves are static and relatively inflexible - they are usually difficult to organize, unless we make more lists.

In school we were taught to outline as a way to structure our thinking, and often outlines end up being more useful than a simple list of unstructured or non-prioritized items. But outlines are also limited in structure and it can be difficult to go back and add new items or ideas within the existing framework.

Enter mind maps. They give us the opportunity to organize ideas and thoughts based on a hierarchy and the relationship between the items. Plus they add a visual dimension. It's much easier in the long run to create order as a dynamic process, rather than simply jotting down a static list on paper.

Regardless of what we'd like to believe, we don't always think in a linear fashion. Our brains are used to looking for patterns and relationships, so it makes sense for us to use a method that builds on that tendency, rather than forcing a strictly linear organization for our thoughts. This is one of the reasons mind mapping can be so much more effective at conveying ideas, as well as helping with memory and retention.

Bottom line, mind maps are better suited to the way our human brain naturally works. So we'll look at ways to incorporate mind maps, and you'll have a chance to build some of your own.

In this book we'll explore ways for you to:

~ Identify the benefits of using mind maps, for both your business and personal life, and discover a myriad of ways to use the process effectively.

~ Think about different mind mapping methods and tools so you can start mapping before you complete this book. In fact, there are several activities designed to help you do exactly that.

~ Use mind maps to organize information and manage a variety of projects, regardless of your line of work. Mind maps are an effective way to manage any large body of information - presentation material, lecture notes, or entire projects. The methods we discuss will make your materials easier to recollect and understand.

~ Discover how much easier and more effective brainstorming can be with mind mapping. Mind maps are a perfect way to record and organize ideas, whether you are working by yourself or with others.
