Coping While Hoping for Better Health - Corinne Richardson

Preface: How to use this book

I like to write about what I have personally experienced. At one time or another, I have used every one of the coping strategies outlined in this book, with the exception of selling my discards on eBay or Craigslist.

I do not recommend any one specific coping strategy for everyone as each individual situation is different. Instead, I suggest that you look over the Contents (a listing of 45 coping strategies), and pick the ones that appeal to you. There is no starting point or ending point—just a smorgasbord of coping ideas to read at your leisure. Adopting those that suit you best will give you more time to live your life—what we all desire.

    Your Personal Survival Guide

    Strategy 1

    Attitude

Omar Khayyam wrote: Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life. (www.brainyquote.com).

Your attitude is most important to your health. In my opinion and based on my own personal experience, you can choose, regardless of circumstances, your basic attitude about life.

You can choose to be an optimist or a pessimist, or to be a victim or a proactive survivor. You can choose how you react to situations and how you react to the way people treat you and what they say to you.

When dealing with others, sometimes you may need to take a step back to comprehend what exactly is going on and how you feel.

I have found that hanging onto feelings of anger, disappointment, and resentment is a killer to my mental, physical, and spiritual well-being.

One coping strategy I have found helpful regarding negative feelings and resentments is to give myself time to process my reaction and feelings about the situation. Then I allow myself full range to feel the anger, resentment, disappointment, regret, and any other negative feeling.

At the same time, I put a time limit of twenty-four hours or less to feel the negative emotions. When the time is up, I have to choose whether to let go of the emotions or do something constructive about the situation.

I do all to keep a positive attitude, helped by remembering these pithy sayings; that is, those sayings that are brief, yet forceful and on target, and sometimes described as witty:

    • Let go and let God.

    • Fake it till you make it.

    • Tough times make tough people.

    • Never complain, never explain.

    • Stay positive.

    • It’s a great life if you don’t
