About this ebook
With 12 genres and influences, cities, and scenes, Music + Travel Worldwide guides music fans across an insightful, international stage of sounds to help plan where to go and what not to miss. Curated by experts in the industry, the book travels to Russia to experience the country’s long and inglorious outlaw culture’s sounds of chanson; heads to Buenos Aires to witness the development of cumbia, from the lavish ’90s to its latest digital incarnation; goes “underground” to check out Beijing’s ever-evolving, highly influential experimental music scene; and gets into Berlin’s private clubs that are playing the offspring of techno. Loaded with sidebars and useful trivia about musicians, discography of artists’ albums and 100 festival locations, a timeline of historical events for each of the 12 genres, and detailed maps of venue locations, this book is perfect for the travel lover or the musically obsessed.

FOREWORD
Everybody’s done it—played air guitar in a bar, busted a move in your bedroom, or sang with power in the shower. No matter what the genre, no matter who the musician, no matter where we are, music moves us.
It’s inspiring and infectious, and easily one of life’s greatest pleasures to obsess over. Devoted followers will stand in the rain for hours to get a ticket to their concert of choice, or drop everything if offered access to their favorite artist. The staff here at Museyon Guides know how you feel—we’ve done it ourselves.
It’s also why we’ve created this book. Because not only do we love to listen to music—we love to learn about it. Historical origins, artists’ influences, landmark albums are what tie so many musical genres together. It’s the crossover that helps you expand your musical horizons. Sharing music has been a favorite pastime of fans long before MySpace, iTunes, and last.fm (those outlets have just helped speed up the process). So what better way to gain more musical knowledge and appreciation then to head to the cities where specific genres have staked their claim?
We enlisted 12 writers in 12 different countries to put their knowledge and aural addiction to work as a force for good, and give you the inside skinny on the sounds and scenes of some of the coolest genres around the globe as a result. Some of these include cumbia in Buenos Aires, Celtic punk in Dublin, chanson in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and classical in Istanbul. You’ll also discover the origins of Muslim hip-hop in Paris, the Berlin clubs that keep the beats of techno pumping, which Chicago jazz musicians are keeping the genre jumping, and more.
Because we believe that music makes the world go round—or at the least, makes it sound a lot sweeter.
Although jazz was born in and around New Orleans, there’s little doubt that any other city was more responsible for its development and increasing popularity during the 1920s than Chicago. Boasting abundant employment opportunities, a rich culture, and the possibility for social advancement (including the chance to hold public office), Chicago came to be known as one of the most desirable and livable locations for African-Americans, who steadily migrated to the city’s South Side throughout the decade.
As the population swelled, a vast network of nightclubs emerged, where legendary figures like Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, and Earl Fatha
Hines regularly performed and recorded. Much of the action shifted to New York as the 20s drew to a close, but Chicago remained a magnet for southern blacks. So, for the next two decades, jazz, along with blues and rhythm & blues, continued to thrive. Hard bop flourished in the 50s, engendered by tenor greats like Gene Ammons, Sonny Stitt, Johnny Griffin, John Gilmore, and Von Freeman, and the one-and-only Sun Ra, who began formulating his magical take on Afro-Futurist big band music.

He stuck around, setting up shop with an influential big band at the Grand Terrace Café, where he gave Charlie Parker one of his first pro gigs and where loose after-hours jam sessions laid the foundation for bebop.
Sun Ra (a.k.a Herman Blount)
He burst onto the Chicago scene in the mid-50s. His group spent its early years modernizing the sound of Fletcher Henderson’s great orchestra. By the end of the decade, Ra had incorporated electric keyboards and started dressing his orchestra in wild costumes, planting the seeds of the 60s free-jazz explosion. photo: ©Tobias Akerboom
