    Chapter 1:

    The Lottery Experience

WELCOME to the Professional Basketball League (PBL) 2013 Rookie Draft!! announced Commissioner Peter Davis.

The crowd roared at the sound of the Commissioner’s words. The anticipation in the room grew to see who was going to be the #1 overall pick. There were all kinds of rumors of who it would be, but no one knew. It was rumored to be between three young men, the extremely versatile 6’9 Small Forward Dillon Covington, the dynamic 6’5 Shooting Guard Dennis Ware, or the powerful 7’1" Center Jason Randle. All three of these players were considered franchise changing caliber athletes, but only one could go as the #1 pick held by the Tampa Bay Waves. Even though only one guy could be the #1 pick overall, it was no secret that each of these gentlemen were about to become instant MILLIONAIRES.

Not only were they about to become instant millionaires, but their lifelong dreams were about to be fulfilled. This was especially true for Dennis Ware. Dennis, or Dee Ware as his friends called him, like many other athletes came from very humble beginnings. Matter of fact, basketball was his only escape to a much too distant and unrealistic, for most, paradise. Life was not always easy for this extremely popular small town kid. It was basketball that helped him mentally escape from the drugs and petty crime in his city. It was basketball that also helped him mentally escape from the almost daily Dee Ware! Dee Ware! Don’t forget me when you make it big statements. The pressures of a talented small town kid grew greater. He was the best news in town in over 30 years and the whole town was counting on him to make it big. It was basketball that helped Dennis from becoming another highly negative statistic. Most guys his age were either in jail, up to no good, or worse…dead.

Post high school, Dennis went far out of town to play college basketball at Tech University. He was coming off of an iconic freshman year. He was named to the 1st Team All American Team, 1st Team All Conference, Conference MVP and was the Newcomer of the Year Award recipient. He also set single season school records for most points by a freshman; most 3 pointers made by a freshman; and most steals by a freshman. If that wasn’t enough, he also led his school to its first appearance in almost thirty five years to the American College Final Four tournament, where they lost in the Final Four to a heart breaking buzzer beater.

Because of his play on the court during his freshman year, he had suitors from every major shoe company ready to give him at the least a 10-year, $128 Million shoe endorsement contract. Not only did he have shoe endorsement deals like his other two draft day counterparts, he had multiple million dollar endorsement deals waiting for his picking just as soon as he was drafted into the league. Needless-to-say, draft day was huge for not only Dennis, but for all the other players anxiously waiting to hear their names called as well. This day was a forever life-altering day.

It was two minutes after Commissioner Davis announced the opening of Draft Day that the Tampa Bay Waves submitted their choice for their first pick of the draft. That was the longest two minutes of Dennis’ and every other athletes’ life.

As Commissioner Davis walked up to the stage to announce the pick, the crowd began to rumble and everyone sat up in their seats at full attention. All eyes were on the Commissioner as he began. With the #1 pick of the 2013 Draft, the Tampa Bay Waves selects... as if there were any more anticipation needed, Commissioner Davis took a brief, but what felt like a lifetime pause. Dennis Ware!! 6’5 Shooting Guard from Tech University"

As the emotions and chills ran through his body, he didn’t know whether or not to shout, run in circles, or cry tears of joy. Although it was long anticipated, it was finally here and it just didn’t feel real. It felt more like a dream. All he kept saying to himself was, Look how far this small-town, awkwardly tall, kid has come! Look at me now! As he began to stand, he looked up and mumbled, Thank You God! He then leaned over to give his very emotional mother a hug.

He continued to dap up his agent and the rest of his other overly excited family members who were with him in the back. As he proceeded to receive his hat, jersey, and shake hands with the commissioner, the crowd cheered the moment he made it to the stage. Simultaneously in the background, he heard the flashing of cameras and reports starting to excessively analyze the move made by his newly assigned organization.

It was here. The moment he had been waiting for his entire life. His DREAM was now his reality. No more waking up poor. The life of a young millionaire had arrived.
