About this ebook
Any day that starts with dragon arguments is going to be bad
Kaylin returned from the West March in one piece. Now that piece is fraying. She's not at home in the Imperial Palaceand she never intends to be. All she wants is normal garden-variety criminals and a place of her own. Of course, normal in her new life involves a dragon as a roommate, but she can handle that.
She can't as easily handle the new residents to the city she polices, because one of them is Nightshade's younger brother. On a night when she should be talking to landlords in perfectly normal buildings, she's called to the fiefby Teela. A small family disagreement has become a large, complicated problem: Castle Nightshade's latent magic is waking.
And it's not the only thing.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Not my favorite in the series, but it was still pretty good. I had a great time listening to it. Khristine Hvam does and excellent job, as always.
I'm looking forward to next book/audiobook in this series. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sagara's Chronicles of Elantra series continues with another strong entry.Kaylin has returned from the West March and is attempting to settle back into her old life. But living in the Dragon Court is driving her crazy, and finding a new apartment with a dragon roommate in tow proves to be difficult. Adding to the difficultly, one of Teela's old friends is Nightshade's long-lost brother. When he attempts to visit the fief, Nightshade's Castle reacts violently to his presence, and an ancient menace is released. Soon the city--the entire Empire--is at grave risk.I liked this series better when it focused more on Kaylin's detective activities and slightly more nomal life. But it's worth continuing.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Private Kaylin Neya just wants a home and for life to get back to normal. But for someone who is a Chosen and whose roommate is the only female dragon, things aren't easy. This story is largely about Kaylin's search for a home. It seems that each of these books focuses on Kaylin's relationship with a certain group of the people who live in Elantra. This one is a little different because a lot of the focus is on Kaylin's understanding of the sentient buildings that inhabit her world. When Kaylin goes house hunting, she isn't very successful because the dragons put unreasonable demands on any landlord who might house them. Their main concern is keeping the dragon Bellusdeo safe. However, Kaylin gets a lead from the Keeper that leads to a house on Ashwood Street. She learns that the house is something like the towers that guard the fief lands but that it is different too. Kaylin feels an immediate sense that it is the home she is looking for but she has to go through many hard things before it can be.When Kaylin returned after her adventures in the West March, some friends of Teela's returned with them. These two - Mandoran and Annarion - were recovered from some alternate world and, despite looking like young Barrani, they were greatly changed by the experience. They were Teela's childhood friends and she is worried about them. Annarion is Nightshade's brother. Nightshade and Annarion argue because Annarion is disappointed with some of Nightshade's choices. Their argument has the unfortunate effect of releasing two of the Ancients who were held captive in the bowels of Nightshade's castle. The Ancient has the power to unmake lives and all of the residents of Elantra - dragons, Barrani, and Hawks - muster to try to defeat them before they destroy the city. Kaylin and her familiar are also an essential part of the battle which tests her in new ways and forces her to make some hard decisions.I really liked this story and found it very compelling. The author has a way of making the viewpoints of all the various races distinct. She has also created a marvelous main character in Kaylin and surrounded her with a cast of fascinating people. I can't wait to read the next episode - CAST IN HONOR.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Another richly woven gem!Sharing accommodation with a dragon, especially one who is continually being guarded does have its drawbacks, but then so does living in the palace. Arguments for one thing have a way of deafening those unused to them.Since her return from the West March Kaylin has much to put up with, including the lost Barrani, out of time and understanding of how and what the 'now' is. This new episode in Kaylin's life certainly lives up to the expectations I have come to enjoy from the collection that is the Elanatra Chronicles.I love the wealth of meaning in words and names. I am fascinated as always as Sargara continues her underlying treatise on the power of naming, the misunderstanding across cultures about such things, and the intuitive understanding that Kaylin constantly exhibits.Another underlying theme is displaced persons (here, through time) and how they do or do not, or try to fit into a culture and time not their ownThis is not for the first time reader of the series. Understanding is definitely captive to what has gone before. As always though I am bound up with Kaylin and her acceptance of those she adopts into her idea of family.Kaylin's search for the idea of home for herself and Bell is what sparks some of the action, and this idea of home is interestingly explored. But the story goes way beyond this. The towers are disturbed by the lost Barrani intruders, and the Ancestor is alerted. Things become grim. And let's not forget Kaylin's familiar--the tiny dragon! The ending is that wonderful wry mix of Kaylin at her human best as she continues to act in those ways we all applaud.A NetGalley ARC
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I feel like I don't understand half the stuff that goes on in these books, but what I do understand, I really like. This book was slow in a few places early on and very confusing in the plotline about Teela's friends. In the end, however, I found myself plowing through to the end, thoroughly captivated. The reasons for my enjoyment would constitute spoilers, though. Also, this book was seriously lacking in Nightshade. I suspect that will be made up for in the next book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5In this installment of the Chronicles of Elantra, there's no immediately obvious threat. The threat develops as the story progresses until the grand finale. I enjoyed the developing dynamics between some of the characters introduced in Cast in Peril and our mains at the beginning, as well as the marathon of battles at the end. As always, Kaylin Neya manages to be endearingly honest and unfortunately untactful while doing her best to help people out of whatever difficulty they find themselves in, whether that's encounters with mythic entities or merely dragon courtship difficulties.
Although the Chronicles of Elantra books can stand alone, I find the world-building more interesting when they're read in a series. Cast in Flame also refers to events whose true weight can only be understood by people who've read Cast in Courtlight and Cast in Peril, at minimum.
Michelle Sagara has created a unique world, sympathetic characters, and action-packed plots, and the Chronicles of Elantra is one of my favorite modern fantasy series. However, I would recommend reading it to yourself rather than aloud. Some of the sentence patterns are non-intuitive, and she often uses only typographic cues to indicate changes of speaker and telepathic communication. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great continuation of the last book, actually found it to be better than the last one and look forward to seeing her adventures in Nightshade
