About this ebook
A book of poetry and songs, reflecting on the various emotions and feelings that describe the American experience. Processing both the myth and realities of the American Dream.
Gary Hawkes
Gary Hawkes spent most of his child hood years on Whidbey Island in western Washington, aside from three years spent in Japan during his mother and step-father's Navy deployment. The experience of living in Japan and calling that country home and then moving back to the U.S., had quite the effect on the young aspiring writer; a unique perspective on what it means to be an American.Early on however, Gary's interests were mostly in music and sports. It was periodic encouragements from family and specifically a high school teacher that spurred Gary to pursue writing more diligently later on. Most of the writer's early work were simple short stories and some poetry.Several years after graduating college he published his first collection of poems and followed quickly after with several more books of poetry and short stories. Currently living in Washington State.

Forget
Forget debate
Forget history
Forget what it means to be free
Free to eat
Free to speak
Free to steal from people in need
Right to be lazy
Right to not care
Right to charge extra to breathe clean air
Manipulate the agenda
Manipulate thought
Manipulate the reason the wars have been fought
End of reason
End of the New Rome
End of the country I call home
This Time
Can’t take much more
So here, take a pill
Lose yourself into the nonsense
Fall in line to support the corporate’s
Easy warm feeling to hide the truth
Let go in the land with no rules
The doubt and despair will soon be gone
Replaced by complacent ambivalence
Singing the patriotic song
Sinister forces lead the parade
March in cadence with a smile on your face
Question nothing in the perfect world
We are the chosen people
That’s what we’ve been told
Don’t worry of others
Forget about the future
Follow the mantras laid out before:
LOVE IS HATE
WAR IS PEACE
What are words really for?
Old Man
Old man creaking around at night
Unable to see the light
Frightened by the darkness laid in waste
Anything for just another taste
Welcome the rich sounds the past makes
Awakens again to make his stake
Foolish life that fell behind
Leaving the boy who could only cry
Ignores the request to move again
The ancient pull from the enlightened men
Free yourself from the shackles of Dark
Time to ignite a new spark
Eternity waits in the distance
Take the hand, right this instant
Savor
Great time to get lost again
Continue to be ruled by damaged men
Opportunity for all is just pretend
No balance, destruction at all costs
Let the whole thing continue to rot
No one cares anyway, save that for another day
Time to savor the last dance
Time to savor the pending fall
Time to savor the power of the ones who make the common man feel so small
How long till the end
Does anyone really know how or when it will happen?
We know it is our destiny
The price of our gluttony
Only caring about what happens to me
Time to savor the last dance
Time to savor the pending fall
Time to savor the power of the ones who make the common man feel so small
New Energy
Perhaps a new ending is being written
Enjoying the current passage
The fading enlightened age
