Crystal Dawn

When she’s not out hunting rogue vampires and werewolves, you can find Crystal Dawn out exploring the galaxy. She can do it all without ever leaving her computer. She kicks ass, takes names, and puts it all down for the enjoyment of her readers. At least that’s what I think she told me. Writing came as a natural outlet for her overly creative mind. She has always told stories and even written some but publishing books didn't start until 2012 with The Rebirth, was the first of the Planet Amazon books. Crystal has also been lucky to have some wonderful beta readers who keep her on track and help inspire her.Secretly, she crushes on all her sexy heroes because all her stories end happily. That is one of the things that makes writing such a joy. Knowing that it makes her reader's day a little brighter. Not that she doesn't read sad books sometimes. While still in school, she read Where the Red Fern Grows and cried like a baby. It was a wonderful book and sometimes a bit of sadness has to be put in books because that's part of life. While she reads all kinds of books at some time or another, PNR and SFR, which she writes is what she reads the most for pleasure. When she started writing, she decided on going Indie after the first two books because an author has more control. She believes Indie will compete well and continues to grow. The need to give pleasure to her readers keeps her going and she sees a long career ahead. Growing up mostly in the NW Arkansas area, it has given her a good place to set some stories and many of her characters come from there or nearby SW Missouri. The start of her stories is the easy part. Finishing them is a little harder when all the stories are in there trying to get out. She loves reading, chocolate, fine sweet wine, and traveling among a large list of pursuits. Her favorite people, after her family and close friends, are her readers who she says are some of the most wonderful people in this galaxy and the next.

    Cousins of the Moon

    Book 1

    Evry Night

Roc, a white wolf, finds herself finally being noticed by the vampire, Simon, the one she has loved since she was a young girl. It’s a shame he waited until she was in her late forties to take notice. He agrees to protect her from an unknown group of supernaturals that seem determined to capture her. Will all this time they spend together end up showing Simon that she’s the one for him?

Leon leads one of the groups that has tried to capture Roc. His attempts are thwarted, most of his wolves captured, but he escapes. The Council searches for him to no avail and as others become more dangerous, he is no longer actively pursued. Where could he be and what could he be up to?

    Prologue

Leon huddled in his hotel room. It was a real dump between the roaches that fell on him from the ceiling during the night and the water that wet his pillow whenever it rained. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. It wasn’t his fault. None of the unfortunate events that made up his miserable life were. He was always given the hardest opponents and his own men were always the most incompetent. It was because everyone could see how brilliant and capable, he was, but even the greatest leader needed something to work with. Maybe he should have switched his loyalty to the Forgotten Ones.

It was probably too late now. They would be under the delusion that it was his leadership that had caused the failure of his mission. Once again, the world had conspired to pull victory from his grasp. Leon would rise again as he always did. It was true that Roc was no longer a viable option, but the white wolf clan was large and varied. He had just been given a list of unmated females, one of which was Roc’s own sister. She was next up on the list and quite attractive in her own right. He would forget Roc and concentrate on Helena. Just a little while and the council would give up looking for him as they always did. They were nothing if not consistent in their failures.

    Chapter 1

    Trouble Brewing

I can’t leave Roc and little Duncan, so I need you to attend the summit for me, Simon said as he looked at Chance. I can put it off no longer. The others are restless, Adam is annoyed at the delays. I think something else crawled up his ass, but he turns all his anger to me.

I have no problem taking care of things for you, you know that. I can cheer up Adam, we’re old friends, Chance answered. Politically, Chance was in the top ten most powerful vampires on the continent and if you asked him, the best looking. Charming? Yes, when he chose to be. Conceited? He preferred the term convinced. Handsome? Undeniably.

I’m aware, but maybe I worry that you’re too eager to go. I know that Helena is nearby, and I don’t want her hurt. I saw the way you two looked at each other the last time we visited Ariel’s.

Simon was protective of his mate, Roc, and that protection extended to the unmated females of her family that had no one in particular to stand up for them. Even if he didn’t see things that way, Roc would try to protect them which would place her in danger, so he did it to spare her worry.

    I would never…

I don’t mean physically. She’s not tough like Roc is, her heart has already been bruised recently and she needs time to heal. Simon explained impatiently. Why can’t you just leave this one female alone this once? She should be off limits and you should know that. It wasn’t like you would ever mate her. That would change everything.

It’s already been over a year. She’s not a supernatural, she can’t spend years pining away for someone. Why did Simon have to do this now? It was time to go, besides, Chance would have his time with Helena. They had already decided, and he found he couldn’t fight his need to have her.

The jackass she had thought she loved was like a sailor with a girl in every port except his had been all over town. Chance didn’t believe Helena had really loved the guy and he thought the luckiest day in her life had been when she ran into an old girlfriend, and they started talking about the men they were seeing. It turned out their men, were just a man. The same man and all the overtime he worked was instead devoted to his hobby. His hobby was sleeping with the most women he could. Chance didn’t want to get serious about any female, but he only spent time with one when he dated. It would be disrespectful and hurtful to do otherwise.

What’s that suppose to mean? Simon asked instantly on guard.

Chance knew many of Simon’s people and Roc’s talked about how long it had taken for him to finally make the right decision. Chance knew his guilt over what he put her through would probably never go away. Simon regretted the time lost, all over his fears. He wished he’d explained himself better so Simon wouldn’t take it wrong.

I wasn’t referring to you and Roc. I just meant life is short for a human, they have to get on with their lives. No time to waste and all that.

Simon gave him a long hard look then nodded, satisfied that he hadn’t been disrespectful. As a friend, Simon would allow him some leeway, but as his superior, he couldn’t afford to. It was too easy to lose control and lose the loyalty of a group like the vampires. He had fought his way to the top with bloody battles and hard decisions. Therefore, he couldn’t afford to go soft now even though some would argue that as a newly mated male that had recently been presented with a son, he had already gone soft where his family was concerned. Chance knew Simon was lucky that Roc could defend herself and unfortunate in that she already had been forced to. At least he was certain of the loyalty of all those in this building, which was where they chose to live, for now.

You’ll have to keep your attention on the matters at hand. Things are happening, rogues are gathering. We’ve waited, possibly too long already. Redheads are nothing but trouble anyway.

Rogues do that, it’s almost like a cycle. That’s no big deal. Yeah, redheads with emerald eyes and curvy figures were lots of trouble.

Rogues of witches, vampires, and wolves, together?

Damn! I’ve never heard of such a thing.

There is also a new drug being sold that contains vampire blood.

Don’t they realize how dangerous that is?

Those selling it don’t seem to care. They are after a profit and using it to control wolves and others. Simon explained.

I’d heard rumors of those things. Some call them blood wolves, but I never believed it was true. Is this what you want me to deal with?

It is the most pressing matter right now and what this meeting was called for. I regret pushing this on you, but it’s too soon for me to leave Roc.

I understand, I can and will deal with this.

Simon said nothing more. It was his fervent hope that Chance would put this first and leave Helena be, at least for now. This situation with rogue vamps popping up all over the state of Missouri and now even nearby states, was not to be tolerated. It was testing the newly formed alliance that witches, wolves, and vampires were trying to form and bringing danger to his mate’s people, the white wolves.

He had promised resources which he had already given, and he would give more, but at this point someone with authority had to go there representing him and the vampire leadership of North America. Chance had better represent them well or Simon would kick his ass. If he messed with Helena, Roc would kick his ass and Chance would probably prefer the pain Simon would dish out to the wicked torture Roc would administer to him. Simon had to smile, he was proud of his mate and her abilities. She was stronger than the average wolf and prettier too.

When it came to sending Chance to this meeting, he didn’t feel good about it. He had put things off as long as he dared, but he trusted him to give it his best. Simon had to stay with his mate and their infant son because threats had been made and he wouldn’t trust his little family’s safety to anyone else. He had been trying to track the threat, but he had had no luck so far. Still, he felt like he was throwing Chance into a tempest, these blood drugs were dangerous, and the problem was escalating. As they took out one bar that traded in the drugs and hid Chief, the vampire that ran all the illicit organizations that operated the illegal blood drug trade, two more seemed to be found selling the poisonous drugs.

His friend seemed to think it was a matter of trust, but it was a matter of much more than that. Whatever happened at the meeting, would effect the future relationship between vampires, wolves, and witches for years to come and the sales of the blood drug would effect the relationship between supernaturals and those humans in the government that knew they existed. There were more of them than the average person might expect.

Chance went to his room packing a suitcase, a rather large suitcase, full of the things he might need. He threw in a huge multipack of condoms, not conceited, but merely convinced that he would need them. The vampire always bought the extra-large, for fit, and he got the ribbed because the package assured him it would bring her the most pleasure. Always a thoughtful lover, if she didn’t get off, he wouldn’t get off. His choice of the bold yellow color was so they would be easy to locate because the pack echoed the color of the condom inside. Ray, one of his guards who had gone to the store with him, had teased him that the females would all remember his bold banana.

    My what? He had asked.

Ray had repeated, Your bold banana, for that’s what it will look like once it’s all dressed up.

He had smacked Ray upside the head, but now the picture was in his mind, and he couldn’t forget it. It made him laugh at inappropriate times. Maybe he should just buy them in a different color and toss these? Well, Simon had told him to hurry so he didn’t have time. Helena had expected him for a few weeks now meaning he needed to hurry anyway. She probably thought he was resisting the trip because he had changed his mind about her.

Nothing was further from the truth. It was because he wanted her more than he could remember wanting anyone or anything else. He did have some concerns that she could be dangerous to him. A female like that could be addictive but he would just resist her, he was a strong vampire with no need or desire for a female as a permanent fixture in his life. They had agreed, a short affair while he was there on business, then they would walk away hopefully as friends. Chance had enough angry females that had changed their mind once they had realized how wonderful he was. They thought he would just give in, ha, no way Jose. He was the quintessential bachelor and tears only made him run faster.

Catching Simon’s private jet from New Orleans to Springfield made it a quick trip, he wouldn’t have time to be bored with emails to send and to read. The first one would be to Helena.

    Helena,

I am finally on my way and will arrive this afternoon. I didn’t delay on purpose, the timing was Simon’s, and I had no choice. I hope to see you as soon as possible after I arrive. Come to my hotel, the one I stayed at last time. I’ll be in the same room, and I’ll be waiting for you if six is alright?

    Sinfully yours,

    Chance

He couldn’t deny that he anxiously awaited her reply. She drew him in, she had since the first time he had met her at Ariel’s place.

Next, he sent an email to Adam, who was a little annoyed at all the delays as well. Simon holding him back had added a tension between him and the other two representatives. It was funny with such an important objective, that none of the top people would be at the meeting. Of course, the wolves temporarily lacked a top dog. The speaker had been charged with treason and he hadn’t been replaced yet, but Adam was only an acting council member. The witches, probably taking their cues from the vampires and wolves, sent someone who might be in charge someday.

Cherry Woods was young, much less experienced then either he or Adam, but she was being groomed for the witch’s council, someday. She did act as an ambassador between her people and other supernaturals, so maybe they had chosen her because she knew how to be inoffensive to vampires and wolves. She was also a white wolf, so that would make supernaturals show her respect. The young witch was also very attractive and if he wasn’t so smitten with Helena, he might have put some moves on her. Maybe next time, who could say? Maybe not, because Simon would probably accuse him of trying to sleep through all of Roc’s unmated female relatives. He sighed, he was feeling very put upon. It was sad when a male couldn’t just be a male, wild and free, chasing females without a care as he had when he was younger.

Since he’d arrived, he’d gone to Blake’s pack. Chance looked around the lovely home Blake and Ariel had. He was staying in a guest room, it was very nice and now that it was suppertime, he would find out it the food was as good as he had heard it would be. Although he had checked into a hotel, Blake had come to get him. It seemed that the instructions were that he, Adam, and Cherry would all be staying there until the meetings were done. He had kept the hotel room, he would be needing it soon and he planned to move through the meetings like hell on wheels. Now he had sent Cherry a quick email as he had gathered his mostly still packed luggage. Helena was next and he hoped she would realize his plans right now were at the mercy of others.

Once he arrived at Ariel’s he dropped off his stuff in the room Blake showed him to and Blake led him to the dining room. They seemed to eat en masse with almost every chair full except one next to Blake that he figured was his. He’d arrived before lunch and he’d not seen Helena yet, but he planned to change that soon. Since she couldn’t come to him, he would go see her instead. He knew Ariel would let him use her SUV especially if she didn’t realize he had plans with Helena.

Once the meal, that was excellent by the way, was done, Chance just waited for the opportunity to get Ariel’s keys and slip away. No problem, just like he had hoped. He drove down the road with his mind on her. His mind had been on her so much in the last few months. It wasn’t normal for him, but he thought it was because she was a white wolf. She might hold his attention longer than others had, but he would get her out of his system eventually. She was just a female, and they had no permanent place in his life.

It seemed everyone and everything going on had conspired to keep them apart, but here he was, almost to Helena’s house. He almost moaned as he relived that one kiss, that one warm embrace they had shared before he had been forced to leave the last time he had seen her. Simon was a wicked taskmaster, no one would argue that. With so many serious issues and with the wolf world being thrown into confusion because of the result of some investigations into political higher ups, Chance just hadn’t been given any freedom in a while. He only hoped Helena waited for him because his body craved her with a desperation that increased the closer he got to her. That was because since he had last seen her, he had found he had no interest in any other female. Crazy, huh? That was so unlike him that even Simon, Roc, and other associates of his had commented on his nonexistent social life.

The thought of her soft red/brown hair, her curves that could fill his hands so beautifully, and her soft lips that he ached to kiss, had kept him awake at night on more than one occasion. He remembered that kiss, the sweet taste of her mouth, her silky skin under his hands and her cousin Zee who had interrupted them and then refused to leave, cutting their experimentation short. Diego had admired the saucy wench, Zee, it would serve her right if he won her interest.

Diego was a ladies’ man of strong repute. He would give her a run for her money and teach her not to interfere in the affairs of others by giving her worries of her own. That might not be a good idea after all since Zee had a reputation of her own. She played with them a while, then sent them on their way, lovesick and heart sore. It would be fun to watch those two, who played fast and loose with their lovers, fall for each other.

He pulled in the driveway of Helena’s house. All these white wolves seemed to live in isolated places surrounded by acreage. Helena’s place was smaller than most because she refused to use the money Roc had given her and left it in trust for a rainy day. She had her own business as many white wolves did. She had her own websites that sold a variety of items, but she also set up at flea markets and sold items she bought at yard sales. Some of the items she bought and fixed up, some she sold as is. It was a fair living she made that way, and her schedule was her own.

The lights were on, he hoped she was waiting. He walked to the door and knocked loud enough to ensure she heard. He stood, waiting impatiently, hearing the sound of someone as they came toward the door.

    Chapter 2

    Helena’s Place

Helena wondered if Chance would come see her like they’d agreed upon. She thought about the big, beefy vampire and heat started shooting through her. Not smart! Her family, she knew, thought of her as innocent even though she had recently turned twenty-eight. Twenty one years younger than Roc she was, even though no one would believe it now that Roc had gone wolf. Although Roc was the oldest, Helena was by far the youngest. Her parents said she was a pleasant surprise, but she knew she was an accident. They had already had all the children they intended to, and they were nearly all raised and then she had surprised them. A change of life baby, the old timers called her. A child born to parents past their prime and believing prevention was no longer necessary.

That was probably why all her siblings were so protective of her, she was more like their daughter in age than their sister and she even had nieces close in age to her. It was the reason they warned all the bad boys off, all except one they
