    A Teen Friendly Book

    Old people have incredible secrets

    Chapter 1

    Happy Birthday!

Tegan jumped out of bed and immediately sprinted out of her bedroom and down to the kitchen.

Today was her birthday and she was very excited. She had a massive smile that filled her face from ear to ear.

When she arrived smiling at the kitchen no one was there to greet her. No lights or fans were on. She thought that was odd because her father was always in the kitchen, making lunches for her and her brother when she got up in the morning.

She looked at the clock and expected it to tell her that it was only five o’clock in the morning, way too early for her father to be up. But it didn’t.

The clock said that it was seven fifteen, the normal time for her to stroll into the kitchen and to start her morning routine.

Tegan was puzzled. No one was around. They must be hiding, she said to herself. They are hiding because it’s my birthday and they want to surprise me, she thought.

I’m here, Tegan called out quite loudly. I’m awake and I’m in the kitchen, she continued as she poked her head under the table.

    No one was there.

She opened the pantry door. No one was there. She looked behind the curtains, hoping to find her father and brother hiding there.

She felt a bit silly, like she was playing a game of hide and seek.

No one heard her or saw her bending down or opening doors. Her brother did not answer her. Her father did not shout out, Happy Birthday Tegan! No one jumped out from a secret hiding place and started to sing, Happy Birthday to you!

    The kitchen remained silent.

I must still be sleeping, Tegan said to herself. This must be a dream. They know it’s my birthday. Someone should be here to sing to me and congratulate me, she muttered to herself as she pinched her arm.

It hurt. The pain that she felt told her immediately that it was not a dream.

I’m fourteen today, if anyone cares, Tegan yelled, apparently to no one.

The room remained silent. Tegan shouted the same line, a little louder this time, Hello, can anyone hear me? I’m fourteen today!

Her older brother Scott shuffled into the kitchen half asleep. He looked at her for a moment and said, Why are you yelling so early in the morning?

Did you hear what I said? Tegan asked.

    Not really, Scott replied.

It’s my birthday! Tegan heard herself say for about the tenth time this morning.

Oh, Scott mumbled with no emotion. Happy Birthday, he added with even less enthusiasm as he slowly moved to a chair and sat down.

Finally, Tegan called out quite loudly as she stared at her brother.

Scott sat in the chair with his head resting on his chest and his eyes barely open. Tegan moved across the room and sat down in a chair close to him.

Scott lifted his head and saw that his sister was staring at him. He was not expecting to see anyone up close and personal so early in the morning.

Ahhhh! Scott shouted as he sat up quickly. He was a little bit startled and he almost fell out of his chair. Why are you sitting so close and looking at me like that?

    Presents, Tegan said.

What do you mean presents? Scott asked.

Are you going to give me my birthday present now? Tegan replied.

No! I didn’t even know that it was your birthday, so how can I have a present for you, Scott told her.

You didn’t know it was my birthday! Tegan shouted in a very surprised manner. I’ve been giving you hints about it all week.

Well, obviously the hints did not work because this is all news to me, Scott told her.

You can give me my present later, Tegan stated. It’s my birthday all day long.

Whatever, Scott groaned as he stood up to get a bowl. He grabbed a box of cereal and went to the fridge for milk.

    Where’s dad? Tegan asked.

    I don’t know, Scott said.

Have you seen him? Tegan asked

He came into my room really early this morning and said something about picking up Nana. She is coming over and we have to watch her, Scott told her.

Why did he tell you? Tegan asked.

I don’t know why dad does most things, Scott replied.

Why is Nana coming here? Tegan asked. What happened to Aunt Ruth. Isn’t she in charge of looking after Nana?

It’s way too early in the morning for so many questions, Scott said.

Do you know anything? Tegan asked.

    Not much, Scott replied.

That’s for sure, you don’t even know the date of my birthday. Do you know how old I am today? Tegan asked.

You were talking to yourself when I walked into the kitchen. You are thirteen, Scott said.

Tegan growled and stated very strongly, I’m fourteen!

I knew that, Scott said and laughed, I was just messing with your head.

Tegan was unimpressed with her brother and growled at him again.
