    CHAPTER 1- WHY STORE FOOD?

Food is one of the basic needs in order to survive. It is also the first to become scarce once disaster strikes. Shelter can be made from whatever debris available. Clothing can be frown whatever scraps available in the immediate environment. One can even wear the same clothes for an indefinite period. But not food. Having food, how much of it is taken, and how often can spell life and death. A person can last for 5 days without eating but doing so will greatly affect health. The mind and body function poorly with lack of adequate food intake. A weak body and poor brain functioning can severely reduce the chances of survival. A weak body won’t be able to create a safe shelter. A weak body won’t be able to go further to search for salvageable objects to increase survival. Without adequate nutrition, the body will not be able to much of anything than just sitting or lying around weak and even more helpless. A mind that cannot focus is also a deterrent to survival. The inability to think clearly means inability to find ways to assure survival. A poorly functioning brain also makes even poorer decisions that may endanger the self and others. This is the main reason why there should always be readily available food because it will serve as sustenance to the mind and body for better chances of survival.

Picking on food scraps from the rubble is very unsafe. In a disaster, there is a huge risk for food and water supply contamination. Chemicals may have been spilled. Even simple household chemical like cleaning solutions spilling over food is enough to cause contamination and poisoning. Picking through rubbles is also dangerous. Removing debris in search for food may cause unstable structures to collapse. For this reason alone, it is best to have a ready supply of food to eliminate the need to go searching for food in potentially dangerous places.

It may take several hours to days before finding an outlet that sells good food, especially if the disaster is widespread. Food relief from outside may takes an even longer time to reach the target areas. Depending on help from the outside is not a very sure thing, as there are several factors that can delay help. Roads may have been blocked or severely damaged, which can restrict and severely slow down the arrival of help from the outside. Bridges may have collapsed, which might require rescuers to take a longer, circuitous route. The alternate route may even prove dangerous, such as needing to cross a raging river or have to climb down a precipitous cliff to reach the distressed areas. The weather may not be conducive for air support to come and drop survival necessities. Waiting for aid is more likely to take a while. It is important to have some nourishment during this period of waiting.

Also, once help arrives, food supply may prove not enough for everyone. Distribution is often according to the needs, such as older people, children, the sick and pregnant mothers are often given provisions first because of their greater need. The next batch of provisions may take a few more days to reach the disaster area. This would mean having to wait longer. The longer the body goes without adequate nourishment, the lesser the chances of survival.

These are just the top reasons why people should always store food before disaster strikes. Food is essential for survival and everyone should have immediate access to it.

Storing food for the future, in case of disaster, is not the same as shopping for daily, regular food. It requires smart thinking to get the best deals, with the best and most complete items, and for food that would last for a longer period than most other regular food. This isn’t just about storing for a month or for the winter. This is about storing food to be used in an undetermined time in the future. That is why prepping food takes a little bit more effort and understanding to make this work in the future. Imagine hoarding cans of food only to find out it won’t be enough sustenance when disaster comes. Not only that, imagine having to find out that the food is no longer fit to eat when the need comes.

CHAPTER 2- DETERMINE NEEDS VS. WANTS

Choosing what is needed can be pretty difficult because wanted items are often considered as needed items. Getting too many of these wants may mean getting too little of the needs. It is important to plan carefully, detailing all things that are needed and things that are wanted. Prepping does not always mean not getting what people want. It just means creating a careful balance of the need and making a little room for the wants.

To determine what is truly needed and what is a want, define the parameters for each of these. Real needs are items required for basic survival. Without these, survival is significantly reduced. A want is something that makes survival more comfortable and convenient. For instance, food is a need. Survival depends on having adequate food intake. A steak, however, is a want. While steak is food, this particular food is not necessary for survival. Steak is a want because it can, if available, make the days after disaster strikes much tolerable. There are other less expensive foods and better for storage than steak. As long as the basic requirement for
