    About the Author

    Foreword

The profound negative affect that alcohol has had on my immediate family inspired the research and publication of this book.

The national ethics of drinking as a way of life, are difficult to change. Even on an individual level a person’s consciousness often must be significantly jolted in order to internalize the problem and attempt to change. This jolt may come about in many ways, but the most effective instrument of change is experiencing a real need, whether physical or spiritual, to make the effort to bring about lasting change. Of course an unexpected tragedy is, in many cases, the reason why a person’s behavior will change.

The drinking and driving epidemic which now plagues the United States is also a global disaster. Hopefully, the data gathered here will have an impact on the general public.

I wish to thank the many people and agencies who lent their advice, encouragement, and support to this project.

    Introduction

Alcohol is a major contributing factor in automobile crashes. Approximately sixty percent of fatal crashes each year involve a driver who had been drinking. In fact more than three-quarters of these drivers had a blood alcohol level that exceeded the .08 percent limit required for intoxication; on the average their blood alcohol content (BAC) was found to be .20 percent. According to the National Council on Alcoholism, of the people stopped for driving under the influence (DUI) and cited for drunk driving, two-thirds are deemed to have a drinking problem.

To gain some perspective on the gravity and horror that are the results of drinking and driving, consider the following scenario:

Madigan Army Hospital in Tacoma, Washington prepared a Memorial Day weekend safety campaign by demonstrating the effects on a high-speed auto crash. A car traveling at fifty-five miles per hour and containing a test-mannequin, crashed into a tree. Using time-lapse photography, the following results were demonstrated. ¹

    1/10 of a second:

The front bumper and chrome frosting of the grill work collapse. Slivers of steel penetrate the tree to a depth of over one inch.

    2/10 of a second:

The hood crumbles and smashes into the windshield. Spinning rear wheels leave the ground. As the fenders come into contact with the tree, the car bends in the middle with the middle with the rear end bucking over the front of the car.

    3/10 of a second:

The mannequin’s body is now off the seat, torso upright, knees pressing against the dashboard.
