One day everything in my life changed.
My wife napped nearby in her hospital bed. I sat across the room looking at Ethan, our newborn son, in his crib next to her. With her graduate school schedule and his needs, I began to wonder if I’d ever find the time to write.
I mean, I knew I’d still write.
However, it was one thing to write for businesses to help pay our bills. I knew that would continue.
I began to worry about my blog, the websites I write for, and all of my book projects that were under consideration with editors at that time. How would I ever find time for it all?
In that moment, I made a simple resolution. During the first two weeks of Ethan’s life, I would write at least one page in my journal. I’d be on paternity leave. I had colleagues covering my business clients, and I’d lined up guest posts for my blog.
I didn’t have
to write.
Nevertheless, I had this nagging notion that I needed to write at this point in my life more than ever. I needed writing to be as much a part of my life as I needed Ethan. I didn’t want my creativity to wither as I poured myself into him.
As I sat down to write in the hospital that evening and in the days that followed, I gained a sense of clarity about the role of creativity in my
