    Chapter One: Introduction

    The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time India by Sherman Alexie was first published in 2007. The book was illustrated by Ellen Forney.

    It is a young adult novel that has won several literary awards since its publication. It was Alexie’s first young adult novel. Alexie is a screenwriter, stand-up comedian, songwriter, and a film producer.

    Before writing this novel, the author had already written adult novel, poems, screenplays, and short stories.

    According to the author he wrote this novel because he had been repeatedly asked by several teachers, librarians, and teenagers to write one young adult novel.

    The first person narrative is presented by Arnold Spirit Jr. He is also known as ‘Junior.’ He is a fourteen years old aspiring cartoonist. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian can also be called a coming-of-age novel, a bildungsroman.

    The story describes Arnold’s life on the Spokane Indian Reservation. He is encouraged by a high school teacher to attend an all white public high school in the off-reservation town of Reardan, Washington.

    There are altogether 65 comic illustrations in the novel. These comic illustrations sometimes serve as punch-lines which the plot is unfolding and Arnold’s character is being described.

    The major themes or subjects which the novel explores are poverty, alcohol, bullying, violence, and homosexuality.

    Since its publication, the book has been controversial because of its content. There are several sexual references which are generally debated.

    The tragic deaths of the characters and the use of profanity are also discussed as controversial among several study circles.

    Owing to its content, the book has been banned by some school libraries. Some schools and colleges have banned its inclusion in curricula.

    For all that, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is considered as one of the author’s greatest novels. However, parents and educators have often criticized it because the story includes several controversial subjects such as masturbation, homosexuality, alcoholism, and profanity.

    Several groups say that the book presents anti-white sentiments. They say that it should not be read by children.

    He people who admire the book evaluate the novel as a celebration of young adults. They say that the story deals with the issues which are real to the teenagers.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

    The novel begins with the introduction of the central character who is known as Junior. He is a fourteen years old boy living in a reservation in Washington. As the story begins, Junior presents a brief overview of his life that he has lived.
