About this ebook

Yara Jones doesn't believe in sea monsters--until she becomes one.

When a hurricane hits her island home and she wakes up with fins, Yara finds herself tangled up in an underwater world of mysterious merfolk and secretive selkies. Both sides believe Yara can save them by fulfilling a broken promise and opening the sealed gateway to their realm, but they are battling over how it should be done. The selkies want to take her life. The merfolk want something far more precious.

Treygan, the stormy-eyed merman who turned Yara mer, will stop at nothing and sacrifice everything to protect his people--until he falls for Yara. The tides turn as Yara fights to save herself, hundreds of sea creatures, and the merman who has her heart. She could lose her soul in the process--or she might open the gateway to a love that's deeper than the oceans.

Who wouldn't want to be a mermaid?Yara never even believed in mermaids until the day a hurricane hit her island home and turned her whole world upside down. Now she is in the middle of a battle between two different creatures Selkies and the merfolk. Both have a different idea on how she can save them, neither is good for her. The world building was fantastic and I was just immersed into this amazing world of not only mermaids, but a ton of amazing new creatures that I had a wonderful time getting to know. The way these two different cultures dealt with things and how they interacted with one another was so interesting.Yara was definitely a character I could relate with. I also liked that her reactions were realistic and that when things got really crazy she didn't just accept them she actually freaked out and wanted answers. I feel that just makes it seem more real to me. She wasn't a whiny character though, She fought for herself. Even when her world was in chaos, she didn't let others rule her life she made sure everyone knew how she felt and didn't take crap from nobody.Treygan was so much fun to read about. He was complex and compelling. I really liked his determination and loyalty to his people. He really was a good person and was willing to do anything to keep his people safe. Treygan was also a great match for Yara. The romance was sweet and built up slowly. I really liked the "I hate to love you" type of thing going on. At first they were both against each other, but over time they got to know one another and slowly came to care for one another.Dive into a whole new world of adventure in the deep blue!

Beautiful cover! This YA supernatural romance has a bit of teenage angst and some interesting sea creatures including mer people, selkies, Gorgons, and sirens. A decent story overall, with some cool attributes for each species. The three different POVs made the angst-filled parts more bearable.Net Galley Feedback

So I started this book like a day before November and then all the craziness of November happened and even though it called my name several times, I had to ignore it otherwise I knew I'd get nothing done! So the minute I felt relieved of my November chores, I opened this bad boy up and delved into Karen's AMAZING world of mermaids, sirens, selkies and gorgons. I know, you're a little confused by that sentence but it's okay...read the book and you won't be!The Good: Oh my word, what an amazing world Karen has built in this novel. I love the setting descriptions and the introductions to all of the water species. I thought Karen did such an incredible job setting up this fantastical (but honestly, kind of believable) world that involve mermaid's smoking C-weed and half man/half seal's who drink blood. It's a crazy, trippy ride under the water in Tangled Tides, but what a fun ride it is. Yara, the main character is feisty and sarcastic and I really love her. She's that type of character you root for from the very beginning. She demands loyalty, and loyalty she gets. Don't get me started on the men in this novel. I wasn't hip on Rownan until I learned a little bit more about his past and then I understood his actions and demeanor but Treygan on the other hand. Yum. He's probably the sexiest merman I've ever envisioned. I love all the other crazy cast of characters too. Pango and Merrick, the gay merman couple, Delmar, the beefy but sentimental best friend of Treygan, Koraline (who I really hope to see more of in the next set of books!) and even Nixie tugged at my heartstrings a little bit! I thought the romance in the story was great and I loved that it wasn't insta-love and I absolutely love that Yara's ability to believe so strongly in love ends up saving everyone. It's such a beautiful notion...even for a cynic like myself. This was an incredible debut from Karen! The Bad: There was only one thing that bothered me a little bit about the novel and that was the use of some of the slang words that happen in "real" life that seemed very out of place and jilted the story for me. Like the word "hella" that I saw a couple times. To me, it just made that piece of dialogue so much weaker than it could have been if those slang words weren't in there. But that's being nit picky. Overall, I thought this book was FANTASTIC and highly recommended. I give it an A!!!

Read the full Review at Witchmag's BoekenplankGuess what attracted me to this book? Of course it’s the amazing cover! And then we have the very interesting blurb. Unfortunately I had to wait a little bit before I got to read this book. Turns out it takes more than 3 weeks to ship something from England to the Netherlands…. Isn’t England our neighbour? It takes less than a week if I want to get something from Germany! *sigh* O well, at least I got it in the end ^^Enough about shipping stuff, let’s start talking about this great book. It starts with the amazing heroin, who’s certainly not afraid to give her opinion. Finally a heroin who isn’t afraid to show her teeth ^^ In comparison to Yara, Treygan stayed a bit on the background. He was a little bit too suicidal to my taste. Giving your live doesn’t automatically mean that the problems are solved. Also, think of the people you’ll leave behind! He just doesn’t seem to have the energy to keep fighting, although I liked how he changed at the end of the book ^^Besides Yara and Treygan there’s another important person in this story: Rownan. You even experience a part of the story through his eyes, but I didn’t see the point of that. There’s no love triangle, so why is he so important? Although you get more information about the Selkies, it did not add value to the story. It could have been much more thrilling if you didn’t know what Rownan would do!I like how the world of the merpeople and sirens is displayed. It feels and looks so beautiful. It was so easy for me to close my eyes and imagine how it would look like, although in my mind there were always lots and lots of sun-rays. Even when it’s supposed to be night. I don’t know why, but I apparently associate beautiful with lots of sunshine ^^ You also come across the myth of Medusa, in a whole new way and it gives a total different picture of her. A picture in which she’s someone who would die for her love, instead of the monster who would turn everyone into stone with her eyes.Conclusion3 HEARTS. The world of the merpeople was very fascinating and I loved discovering every piece, but Treygan made the enthusiasm I had cool down. I also didn’t like Rownan very much, I didn’t see why we had to read about him. Besides those “flaws” it’s still a good book to read and I recommend it strongly, if only to discover the wonderful world of Rathe ^^

2.5/5 stars. I will give the author this, her worldbuilding was pretty solid. She knew all about what the different "monsters" were and did and seemed to have a pretty detailed background for all of them.

I just couldn't connect with this story, mostly, I think, because I couldn't connect with the main character. She seemed to have fewer actual feelings about events and issues than I thought possible. Maybe she's the most mellow person in the world...?

This is another one that really wasn't for me.

It was so easy for me to close my eyes and imagine how it would look like, although in my mind there were always lots and lots of sun-rays. Sirens, gorgons, and selkies (even a water sprite or two),all make an appearance, and the mythical world that Hooper creates for them is well-detailed and breathtaking. Another thing I loved was the elements of Greek mythology that were present. These elements give background to the merfolk and sea creatures, explaining how they came into being. This book is rich, refreshing, and a much-needed break from all the vampires, werewolves, and fallen angels.Karen did such an incredible job setting up this fantastical world that involve mermaid's smoking C-weed and half man/half seal's who drink blood. You also come across the myth of Medusa, in a whole new way and it gives a total different picture of her. A picture in which she’s someone who would die for her love, instead of the monster who would turn everyone into stone with her eyes.I enjoyed many other characters - such as Rowan, Delmar, Pango, and Koraline. Pango and Merrick are hilarious together, especially Pango. He's the funniest character and I enjoyed every scene he was in. I especially liked how the narration switches between Yara, Treygan, and Rowan because it helped understand each character's motives more clearly.I have to say I was a little surprised by her reaction to becoming a mermaid. She was angry, yes, but what about the freak out?? If you just got turned into a mermaid, you are entitled to freak out a little!) this bring me to the subjects that didn't make sense and this bother me a little:1. Why walk on two legs all of the time if you’re supposed to live in water?2. How exactly did seagarettes and c-weed (drug references that I did not miss and did not keep the selkies and merpeople alive?3. How can Yara see underwater, human eyes aren’t designed to see clearly underwater?4. How did the merpeople change colors?5. What would be the point of building an entire mertown on dry land?6. Yara's mind set or her way of thinking didn't make sense to me - why ask stupid questions, and then run away7. Why the selkies had to drink blood?I absolutely adored the entire cast of TANGLED TIDES, and I think any YA fan would too.

Please note: I first read and reviewed this book in November of 2011 from a copy provided by Rhemalda Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Updating this review to add that disclaimer and formatting. My Synopsis: The day before Yara’s 18th birthday, her guardian – who she calls Uncle Lloyd – has gone to the mainland from the Florida Keys to have kidney dialysis, and a hurricane is blowing up. While she struggles to cover the windows, a stranger appears, offering to help her. He says his name is Treygan and somehow he makes her feel safe and warm. He offers to take her someplace safe, if that is her wish, and she makes the wish. The next thing she knows, she’s waking up a mermaid. What has happened to her? How can she go back to the way things were? And most importantly – why has all this happened right now?My Thoughts: Releasing 11/25/11 from Rhemalda, “Tangled Tides” is a wonderfully fun YA paranormal fantasy with strong elements of romance. While it makes use of the typical triad and oodles of problems getting along between the romantic leads, it all fits in the story and makes sense – unlike many where there is no particular reason. I found it quite refreshing and enjoyable for the plot to be so well-developed. Also, there are a lot of great suspense elements, and plot twists and turns – while I caught a few of the hints far enough ahead of guess what was coming, there were many I didn’t. This story will definitely keep you guessing! Merfolk aren’t the only paranormals to make an appearance, either – there are sirens, gorgons, selkies, sprites … it’s a wonderfully diverse cast. I can say that this is a book I would definitely recommend to people who enjoy romance, fantasy, paranormal and magical reality stories – don’t miss it – available 11/25/11.

What an amazing debut by Karen Amanda Hooper! I was captivated by this story from the very beginning, and believe me when I say that Tangled Tides is definitely one of the best mermaid stories out there. Hooper has certainly weaved quite a story. This book is so much more than a simple mermaid tale. Sirens, gorgons, and selkies all make an appearance, and the mythical world that Hooper creates for them is well-detailed and breathtaking. It was so easy to envision the underwater realm that Yara, Treygan, and their many companions live in. Another thing I loved was the elements of Greek mythology that were present. These elements give background to the merfolk and sea creatures, explaining how they came into being. I feel like with most mermaid stories, there is no mention of how or why mermaids exist, but instead, the reader just has to accept that they do. The fact that Hooper offers explanation to the history surrounding these sea creatures really sets her story apart from others and gives a fresh, new take to the classical mermaid tale. The characters are also wonderful. Each one has their own, definitive voice, making it really easy to connect to them. Yara is faced with a tough decision that not only affects her, but hundreds of others, yet she is resolute and strong, and I really liked that about her. There are moments when she feels fear, but never once does she back down. All of her emotions come across really well, and I think she was an excellent main character. (I have to say I was a little surprised by her reaction to becoming a mermaid. She was angry, yes, but what about the freak out?? If you just got turned into a mermaid, you are entitled to freak out a little!) And then there is Treygan. Oh my, where do I even begin with him? He is strong, confident, smart, and the list goes on and on. He is just a great guy who really cares for Yara, and I love their relationship and chemistry. There were even a few instances where Treygan had to stop himself from having some inappropriate thoughts about Yara, which made him seem more ‘real’ and really fleshed out his character. There are also the minor characters, such as Pango, Rownan, and others, and I liked every one of them. It is very rare that side characters have their own voice (or personality, for that matter), and I applaud Hooper for creating such excellent characters. Hooper’s awesome writing style coupled with great characters and an intriguing plot make Tangled Tides a must read for all. This is one of the best books published in 2011, and also one of the best mermaid stories available. I cannot for the sequel, which is still untitled. There is no release date set, but I hope it is soon! I cannot wait to see what Yara and Treygan’s next underwater adventure will be!

Karen Amanda Hooper’s TANGLED TIDES will make readers wish they lived under the sea.Yara’s eighteenth birthday isn’t about turning into an adult, but a monster. She’s transformed into a mermaid, and that’s only the beginning of what she discovers within our realm. Selkies, Sirens, and Gorgons also have a place, and she’s caught in the middle of being herself and saving sea monster-kind. Then, there is Treygan and Rownan. Two brothers who need her, but only one can have her. Yara has to discover what she is willing to sacrifice or they’ll all be doomed. The beginning of TANGLED TIDES starts a bit slow for me and is a little confusing jumping in and out of three different points of view, but quickly the confusion clears up. TANGLED TIDES is an ingenious tale combining Greek myths and sea monsters, such as mermaids, selkies, etc. The characters swoop the reader up into their lives. Some parts brought smiles, laughter, and tears. I want to be a mermaid, then a siren, even a gorgon sounds pretty cool. Hooper unveils this magnificent world she created, and I want to live in it. Despite the slight hiccups in the beginning, TANGLED TIDES by Karen Amanda Hooper has caught me by hook, line, and sinker. I can’t wait to delve below the sea in book two.

When I first heard of Tangled Tides, by Karen Hooper, my mind immediately went to Disney’s “The Little Mermaid”. However, to say that Tangled Tides is just a fun story about mermaids would be doing it an injustice. Yes, it is a story where the protagonist is a mermaid, but there are other mythical sea creatures weaved tightly into the tale making it more than just another mermaid story.Tangled Tides follows the story of Yara, as she is transformed from human to mermaid and the complicated web of family secrets that follow. There is mythology, betrayal, mystery and a splash of romance. Written using three different points of view, the reader gets a complete look from all parties involved. I enjoyed this story immensely, though, in the very end I got a little confused and had to go re-read a few pages. However, the good far outweighed anything else. I loved the way Karen took different pieces of mythology and knitted them together as her own. I loved the world that she created - though I wished we could have seen more of Rathe and life there. I also appreciated the way she worked out communication under water - speaking through eye contact as opposed to voice. Once I was hooked, I couldn’t put it down. Tangled is a good word to describe the twists and turns that can be found within the pages of this novel. Why do the mermaids want Yara? Why are the selkies fighting for her allegiance? Who is she and why is she important? The story keeps you on your toes, unraveling the secrets of Yara’s past and future.I can’t wait to see what else lies ahead for Yara and the others. I think anyone who loves mythology and fantasy would enjoy this tale.
