Craftsmen Who Make This Garden Set Will Add Style and Comfort to Outdoor Dining
Garden Table and Benches are Modern
OUTDOOR suppers are a summer luxury when the back yard garden is furnished with a table and bench combination. Providing comfortable seating arrangements for at least four persons, the illustrated unit stands ready for service at all times because it is attractive enough to be left outdoors all season. It will be noted that the unit is similar in design and construction to the simplified garden set on the preceding pages. You will find in these matching pieces the means of completing a highly serviceable set of outdoor summer furniture.
The table shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is made of stock size 2″ × 6″ lumber which is purchasable in finished thickness of 1 5/8″ and 5 5/8″ width. Lumber for the set should be free from knots and twist.
The leg units supporting the table top are two frames, each of which requires two upright members 22″ long and two horizontal pieces 28 3/4″ in length. The horizontal pieces have a 3/4″ × 15/8″ rabbet cut across the face of the stock at each end as shown in Fig. 3. These rabbets can be cut on a bench saw. To round the corners of the assembled frames at a radius of 2 3/8″ as shown in Fig. 3, an arc is laid out on the edge, and each piece before assembly is cut to its rough contour on the band saw as shown in Fig. 4.
The frames can be assembled as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. All butting surfaces are coated with waterproof glue; 3″ casing nails are then driven through the uprights and into the horizontal members as shown in Fig. 3. For further strengthening of the joint flathead brass wood screws 2″ long are driven through the horizontal member and into the end member as shown in Fig. 3. Before the screw is driven, a 3/8″ hole is bored to a depth of 1/2″ and is then counterbored with a 3/16″ bit. A length of 3/4″ cove molding is fitted to each inside corner as shown in Fig. 7. Waterproof glue and brads fasten the molding in place. Now that the frame is assembled the outside corners can be finished to shape on a sanding
