    MATERIALS:

    BEEHIVE NON-SHRINK SOCK WOOL (1 oz. skeins), or

    BEEHIVE NON-SHRINK MOORLAND, 3 Ply (1 oz. skeins).

    If clock is desired, about 10 yards of contrasting color is required.

    ROYAL SOCIETY DOUBLE-POINTED SOCK NEEDLES NO. 1.

    GAUGE: 8 sts make 1 inch; 11 rnds make 1 inch.

    Cast on very loosely

    Divide sts on 3 needles, join, being careful not to twist sts, and work around tightly in ribbing of k 2, p 2, for 2 inches for Slack-Length Socks, or for 5 inches for Regulation-Length Socks. Next rnd: Knit around, decreasing evenly around to

    Work in stockinette stitch (knit each rnd) until piece measures in all 5 1/2 inches for Slack-Length Socks, or 11 1/2 inches for Regulation-Length Socks.

    HEEL . . . With spare needle knit from 1st needle

    Slip from 3rd needle onto other end of spare needle (for heel) the last

    of previous row. This is now heel needle.

    Divide between 2nd and 3rd needles (for instep) the remaining

    Turn and work over heel needle only as follows: 1st row: Slip 1 st, p 1 alternately across. 2nd row: Slip 1 st, knit to end. Repeat these 2 rows alternately for 29 rows.

    To Shape Heel: (Right side facing) Slip 1 st, knit

    k 2 together, k 1, turn.

    Slip 1 st, purl

    P 2 together, p 1, turn.

    Slip 1 st, knit

    K 2 together, k 1, turn.

    Slip 1 st, purl

    P 2 together, p 1, turn.

    Continue in this manner, always working 1 st more on each row until there remain

    Knit 1 row. With another needle (1st needle) pick up 16 sts along left side of heel. With 2nd needle knit across all instep sts. With 3rd needle pick up 16 sts along other side of heel, then with same needle knit across half of the heel sts. Slip the remaining heel sts onto the 1st needle. There are now on each heel needle

    Decrease for instep as follows: 1st rnd: Knit around. 2nd rnd: On 1st needle knit to 3 sts from end, then k 2 together, k 1. Knit across 2nd needle. On 3rd needle k 1, slip 1 st as if to knit, k 1, pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitch, knit to end. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until there remain

    Work straight until piece measures (from back of heel)

    or about 2 inches less than desired length when completed.

    To Shape Toe: 1st rnd: Knit to last 2 sts on 1st needle, then k 2 together. On 2nd needle, k 2 together, knit across to last 2 sts, then k 2 together. On 3rd needle k 2 together, then knit to end. 2nd rnd: Knit around. Repeat these 2 rnds alternately until there remain

    Weave sts together; or bind off, fold and sew. If desired, embroider clocks with contrasting color, as in illustration. Use yarn double for straight stitches and use single yarn for outline stitch.
