You should be grateful to God for this opportunity, Tasha. I know how long it takes for girls to make that shortlist. It’s not even up to two weeks, and you’ve been called for a photo shoot. Believe me, you should share the testimony in church.

Share the testimony in church, Emilia said, and amazed me by her insincerity and lack of regard for the deity. I looked at my best friend kindergarten days, and swallowed.

    My mother is dying.

She grabbed my shoulders passionately. I know. And that’s why you should be thankful to God for this opportunity to get the money for the surgery she needs. She threw her hands up in the air. Why are you being so ungrateful?

I have never in my life done this kind of … job. Can’t I reserve a right to be nervous?

She chuckled, and moved back to her vanity. Be nervous all you want. It won’t matter after half a million dances its way into your bank account.

I glared at her, widened my big eyes. Half a million.

Why on earth do you think girls leave their bank jobs to come here? It’s better than working for the UN.

I stared at her for long, my emotions roiling. Half a million. Was she kidding me? My mother had been diagnosed with a rare blood condition involving a medical treatment that would cost two hundred and fifty thousand naira. Her time was ticking. Last month at the doctor’s office, she was given six months to live and less if certain treatments were not commenced immediately. Certain treatments that cost another fifty to hundred thousand, and had me and Teddy, my brother, sell our handsets and every valuable thing in our house.

And me asking Emilia if she could help me get a job in The Ventis, the classy hotel where she worked. Well, the only available job was this one. Half a million.

See, the way I see it is this, a means to get to an end. If the end can justify the means, she shrugged. Why not? She stood up. And stop staring at me that way. When is the photo shoot?

I heaved a heavy sigh. This afternoon. Poolside.

I’ll be on duty but I’ll be praying for you.

Emilia was more religious than I. After my father died ten years ago, I stopped going to church or serving God because I was too busy helping my mum to exist. Teddy got a job as well. With my father’s house taken from us by his brother, and mum, who had never worked in her life, now faced with widowhood challenges, two school-age children, and a house rent, I worked two jobs and had no time for religion.

Problem pushed many people to God.
