About the book and the author
In this most important book, the author looks at a number of foundational truths relating to the gender roles as given by God, outlining what they are and their purpose, while also examining the charge that God is sexist in giving these roles to men and women. Stumbling blocks to one fulfilling one’s roles are examined, including the impact of the feminist movement on the spheres of the home, the workplace, the church, and society. INTRODUCTION

God did it again. He has surprised His servant with another book, one that I would not have gone ahead to write on my own. For one thing, the issues being dealt with here are very controversial in today’s society, not only in the US, but also in every other country on earth. For what needs to be grasped here is that there are two opposing forces at work, one good and one evil. On the one hand, we have God working to bring men and women together in His ordained institution of marriage, as the foundation to bring offspring into this world. And on the other hand, we have the devil opposing God’s good purpose by not only leading men and women to forego marriage altogether and having children out of wedlock, but even leading some to think that it is okay to marry another of one’s own sex. But even before this became fashionable in the last forty years or so, the devil was already at work planting the seeds of division in the relations between men and women, especially relating to the roles God established for men and women, not only in the home, but also in the workplace, the church, and the society we live in. Therefore, this is a book principally dealing with the gender roles, in regards to what God intended and what the present situation is.

And then to introduce how this present book came to be, I must relate that a couple of days ago, I had a very interesting conversation with a woman of fifty, who was divorced twenty-three years ago, after having two daughters and a son with her former husband. I had met her the previous day and now our paths crossed again. Please understand here that this encounter was not for a relationship on my part, nor hers. She just happened to work at the place where I was scheduled to have a meeting with someone else. In any case, we ended up talking for about two and a half hours in that second encounter, on a host of subjects. Probably what kept the conversation going was that we kept hitting upon points of commonality in our backgrounds.

But what ended up triggering this book is that at one point in the conversation, this woman said that she had recently dated a Muslim, but that the relationship did not go too far after she found out how his religion treated women. Then almost in the same breath, as if lumping all of this together, she went on to mention that she had also read parts of the Bible – which she did not consider to be God’s word, by the way – and had no intention of ever reading it again, because she thought, in her words, that it was a very sexist book. When she mentioned that, I said to her that I was a minister, an evangelist in fact, and that I wanted to hear more from her as to why she thought that. And what she said next was really no surprise, as she went on to relate that she had a problem with the fact that God calls wives to be in submission to their husbands. To her that was a repugnant thought, much like throwing a piece of meat dripping with blood at a great white shark or a hungry lion (my analogies).

I will not say anything more regarding our conversation at this point, but save it for the book, but what I do want to relate now is that when I had that conversation with this woman, I had just completed my twelfth book the previous week, and was now waiting on God to see if He wanted me to write another one. So the next morning, after talking with this woman, when I was in prayer with God in my daily time of devotions, God brought the encounter with the woman to mind and then proceeded to let me know that I was to write a book dealing with the roles of men and women in God’s word, and as to whether His word, the Bible, is sexist or not.

And believe it or not, that word sexist is a fairly modern word, not even appearing in dictionaries that are fifty years old or more. To most people’s understanding, they would use the term to describe someone, usually a male, who puts down another, usually a female, on the basis of gender, either by what one says or by the way one acts. Here is how one dictionary defines the word sexist (pronounced ‘seksist’): An adjective, relating to or involving attitudes and behavior toward someone based on a person’s gender; examples being ‘a sexist remark,’ or ‘sexist advertising.’ Apparently the word was first coined by Pauline M. Leek in a speech given in 1965, where she took the word sex and used the model of racism to come up with sexism. Her speech was then widely circulated among feminists and from then on started appearing in print and conversations in the media, although still fairly rare in common usage. Therefore, let us remember at the outset that this is a word that finds favor mostly among feminists, which is part of the opposing force to God’s work here that we mentioned above. What should not surprise us is that this then gave rise to two other terms which are male chauvinist and antifeminist.

And so this is a book about the roles which God established for men and women at the beginning of time. In the first section of the book, we look at the foundational truths from God’s word, where God established the roles He wanted men and women to fulfill in time as part of His creation on earth, for their wellbeing and for His honor and glory. Then in the second section of the book, we look at the evidence to see whether it is true or not that God’s word is a sexist book, as the charge was made by the woman that I was talking to, which is a common view today. And more specifically, do we find in God’s word, the Bible, instances where God treats women as second class citizens in comparison to men? And then in the third section, we deal with the stumbling blocks which have arisen and which tend to prevent both men and women from fulfilling the roles they have been given by God, not to hurt anyone, but for our ultimate good. Then in a fourth section, we look at the present state of things in the world relating to the gender roles given by God, looking at the impact the feminist movement has had, plus looking at a couple of testimonies where we apply the truths learned in the book to concrete situations to show just how God intends the roles He gave men and women to be outworked in time. Then we close with an Addendum, where we have three important chapters, which supplements the material presented in the book.

What I would ask readers to do here at the outset is to reserve judgment on any questions one may have until one has finished reading this book. For what I will attempt to show, with God’s help, is that everyone and everything has a place in God’s order for His creation. In other words, everything created by God – and I mean everything, even sin and evil – serve some purpose of God. What this means then is that disharmony anywhere in God’s creation is due to someone or something being out of place, due to sin, which had its origin with
