A Thank You to Parents
The wave of liberalisation, which opened up India to the world in the early nineties, provided immense socio-economic opportunities for young India, and some of those who seized the opportunities and rode the zeitgeist are the ones whom we call High Lifers.
While this book celebrates the High Lifers for their passion, creativity and ambi-dexterity, it would be in order to also recognise and applaud the efforts of the parents of these High Lifers, because many of them may have made sacrifices and hard choices to enable their children to be get more out of life, become successful and fly high!
A warm salute to the High Lifers’ parents and a warm welcome into the group of High Lifers.
Preface
The ultimate book of ‘guaranteed-success-to-life’ sadly does not exist. However, what you have in your hand is this unique book of tried-and-tested guidelines, smart tips, rich experiences and anecdotes, which would help you balance and plan the jugglery of your life more smartly to get more out of life.
This book, formally a personal growth book and informally a guide map, has evolved after speaking to over 1,000 successful youth, who carry the tags of IIT, IIM, MBA, CA, and entrepreneur, etc. on their resume‘ and also to the new generation which seeks fame and success in emerging careers like the media, fashion designing, retail and ITES. In this book, we call them the High Lifers.
The High Lifers’ book is composed of a dozen short-and-meaty chapters presented in the form of short capsules. The tone and structure of the chapters are friendly, informal and free-flowing (think hyperlinks and visuals) instead of being didactic or prescriptive. Each chapter seeks to address a relevant need and is replete with personal examples, sharing of learnings and smart tips and tricks for practical use. By the very nature of the chapters, there will also be shared themes and common approaches. So, enjoy — this is your book!
Caveat Emptor
This book is not an expert guide, but a collection of the unique takes on life by a few hundred been-there-done-that individuals. Thus, be free to take away what learnings you want and be equally free to reject some (or better still, E-mail back with your experiences and learnings). But remember, these are their experiences; not yours. Use the shared learnings and stories here and make your experiences better. Cheers!
Hope this book becomes a friend, a philosopher, a guide to all of you who are starting, or already charting, your individual journeys in life. Best wishes!
Acknowledgements
The book is built on the generous sharing of learnings, stories, gossips, incidents, fundaas, gyaan, anecdotes and smart tips from about 1,000 High Lifers. Some of them are friends and colleagues, while some others are acquaintances and friends of friends, and still others are strangers who I would have met on a long flight or in an internet chat-room. Most of them want to remain anonymous, due to a variety of reasons; plus, there are some stories and examples that are too personal to
