    Prologue

    ––––––––

The stench of fresh blood lingered in the air and a muffled cry pierced the silence of an unusually quiet night. A small group of twenty or so men, all donning the attire of well-dressed warriors: a soft white, long sleeve button down shirt tucked into the brim of brown pants made of fine leather, looked to the lone woman amongst them. Her long, flowing white hair hugged her tall, thin frame as she met each of the warrior’s anxious stares. They waited for her permission to attack.

With a slow, confident nod of her head, she gave the order. The warriors readied their bows and formed a tight line in front of the regal woman. Worry filled every crevice of their faces as concern for her safety flooded their hearts. They were in a highly unusual situation. It was the first time ever that their Queen had entered into battle with them. But without her, the Lenoi fairy warriors knew they didn’t stand a chance of defeating the blood thirsty vampire waiting in the darkness ahead.

A long, breathy, feminine gasp followed by an eerie silence let the warriors know that they were too late to save the vampires latest victim. Queen Izola lowered her head in regret of not being able to save the innocent human soul. Sadness filled her heart but she forced it down and allowed her anger to take over.

She lifted her head with a determined look in her eyes and with a deep breath, she yelled, now!

The warriors charged forward, down the dirt ground alley separating the old wooden buildings of the eighteenth century human town. Angry snarls and war cries filled the air as the warriors closed in on their prey. They skidded to a stop when their enemy came into view.

The dark figure before them opened his mouth and hissed, revealing sharp fangs covered in blood. The warriors positioned themselves around the vampire to block his escape, then leveled their wooden bows at his heart. It was already known that the arrows couldn’t kill him, but the magic within them would slow him down and give the warrior’s an opportunity to trap him.

The vampire’s deep black eyes locked onto the fairy Queen as she broke through the line of warriors.

Izola he hissed venomously, making his already deep voice sound even more threatening.

Drycus she acknowledged him with utter disgust and met his eyes briefly before her tough stance faltered slightly. Her attention fell to the lifeless young woman in his arms. The poor girl was no more than sixteen. Her throat was covered in blood, her clothes ripped and dirty. All evidence that she had fought hard to save her own life and had lost the battle.

Izola forced her gaze upwards to meet Drycus’ angry stare. Your time in this world is over. I will not allow you to continue your murderous rampage of these innocent people. She glanced to the young girl once more.

A thick, evil laugh echoed in the air. Drycus eased his grip on the dead girl and let her body fall to the ground at his feet. He glanced down at her and smiled thinly before letting his gaze roam around the circle of Lenoi warriors who dared think they were capable of containing him.

He shook his head dramatically. This is where all humans belong...at my feet. With a throaty growl, he kicked the girl’s body across the ground with a force that easily sent her thirty feet in a matter of seconds. She landed in a crumpled heap at Izola’s feet.

The Queens heart ached at his cruelty and disrespect for the young woman. She turned to the warrior closest to her and gave a slight nod. He quickly picked up the body and carried it away with the intention of making sure she was properly taken care of.

Izola glared at Drycus, the corner of his mouth lifted into a sadistic grin. His smut black hair dangled over his dark eyes in stark contrast to his pale white skin. It was like looking into a black hole. There was nothing there but pure evil. No one knew his background or how he was created, only that he was the first of his kind. A vampire. The king as he so cockily named himself. But Izola was certain he must have been human once. His broad build and chiseled facial features matched that of his prey, which is perhaps why so many trusted him and were in return led to their deaths.

The earliest reference to his existence in the sacred journals kept by the Lenoi to record their history was written nearly a thousand years before Izola was born. At the time, Shohala Falls was ruled by a group of four Lenoi elders, all relatives of the creator of their world. One of which, was Izola’s father, Braden. Drycus was brought to their attention after a string of brutal deaths occurred in a small town in New England.

The elders began tracking his movements by the slaughter of humans he left behind as he traveled across the human world. The murders were worrisome but not the immediate concern of the Lenoi. Their main focus at that time had been the disappearance of one of the elder’s daughters who hadn’t been seen in over a year.

Natalia, daughter of Eldon – the oldest of the elders, had possessed a magic so strong that she never learned how to fully control it. Instead, she let it control her. By the time she reached adulthood at a century of age, her mind had become so muddled that she began using her magic in a dark way. She became a threat to her own people. Especially after the death of her husband. She had lost all sense of right and wrong. And began using her magic against other Lenoi. After going on a rampage that left three dead, she vanished into the human world.

Her father and two other elders abandoned their positions to search for her, leaving Braden the sole leader of the Lenoi. The elders never returned. The whispered rumors that spread through the generations were that they found Natalia and she had killed them. No one knew the truth. And no one ever heard anything from Natalia again.

It was like she no longer existed. Some say they felt her death as her soul passed on, but it was never confirmed. And soon speculation of her whereabouts faded when an even more dangerous threat surfaced. Someone was slaughtering humans to feast on their blood, causing fear in the hearts of many. No one had ever heard of such a despicable act before. The drinking of blood was unspeakable. And the culprit quickly became the number one concern of the Lenoi.

Through the centuries, they continued to monitor the reports of thousands of murders committed by someone the humans had nicknamed a ‘vampire’. After much research, the Lenoi learned that his name was Drycus. And that he was not human but some kind of demon created by the devil.

At least that’s what they thought.

Izola locked eyes with the creature in front of her
