Chapter 1
Missygirl the calico cat sat attentively observing her surroundings as one of five furry residents of a large box situated inside a pet store on Woodward Avenue in Bloomfield Hills when the big guy first saw her and she him. Missygirl behaved as if she had been expecting the big guy, catching and holding his eye with one endearing glance and demanding to know what took you so long?
. At about half the size of her four sleeping brothers she was by far the smallest kitten, no larger than your fist, but this seemed not to matter much to her and only served to enhance her striking appearance. It was clearly apparent to any valid judge of such matters that twice as much cat had been packed into half as much space! The big guy looking at her was immediately affected by her unusual attitude, a kind of look-you-in-the-eye, don’t just stand there staring at me with that silly look on your face
, I’m stuck in this box and what are you gonna do about it?
type of expression. The fact that he knew what she was thinking was an immediate signal that here was the kitty he had been seeking!
It was as if a powerful two-way supernatural link-up of some kind had clicked on between Missygirl and the big guy guiding him 30 miles out of his way to find this cat waiting for him! Was this even possible? The results were self-evident because here he was and here she was in the same room looking at one another and thinking the same thing! Exactly when awareness of this connection first began is difficult to pinpoint but it was definitely something new, something tangible and it worked over great distances, or at least that was what it felt like to the big guy. Think of it this way: either his mind and her mind were attuned to the same cosmic wavelength thereby enabling this mysterious rapport not just to exist but also to flourish or some brand of interspecies empathy was hard at work enabling this magic channel of understanding between these two uniquely different individuals. Any way you look at it this peculiar bond was as real to these two as the ground beneath your feet is to you.
Separating these kittens was not the big guy’s wish but he had space for only two in his home. Missygirl needed one of her brothers to accompany her but which one? The choice would not be an easy one because these four brothers were as alike as
