A few years back we lost our beloved pet dog Bear, who was not only our best and dearest friend but also the Vice President of Sunshine here at Atlantic Publishing. He did not receive a salary but worked tirelessly 24 hours a day to please his parents.

Bear was a rescue dog who turned around and showered myself, my wife, Sherri, his grandparents Jean, Bob, and Nancy, and every person and animal he met (well, maybe not rabbits) with friendship and love. He made a lot of people smile every day.

We wanted you to know a portion of the profits of this book will be donated in Bear’s memory to local animal shelters, parks, conservation organizations, and other individuals and nonprofit organizations in need of assistance.

    – Douglas and Sherri Brown

PS: We have since adopted two more rescue dogs: first Scout, and the following year, Ginger. They were both mixed golden retrievers who needed a home.

Want to help animals and the world? Here are a dozen easy suggestions you and your family can implement today:

    •  Adopt and rescue a pet from a local shelter.

    •  Support local and no-kill animal shelters.

    •  Plant a tree to honor someone you love.

    •  Be a developer — put up some birdhouses.

    •  Buy live, potted Christmas trees and replant them.

    •  Make sure you spend time with your animals each day.

    •  Save natural resources by recycling and buying recycled products.

    •  Drink tap water, or filter your own water at home.

    •  Whenever possible, limit your use of or do not use pesticides.

    •  If you eat seafood, make sustainable choices.

    •  Support your local farmers market.

    •  Get outside. Visit a park, volunteer, walk your dog, or ride your bike.

Five years ago, Atlantic Publishing signed the Green Press Initiative. These guidelines promote environmentally friendly practices, such as using recycled stock and vegetable-based inks, avoiding waste, choosing energy-efficient resources, and promoting a no-pulping policy. We now use 100-percent recycled stock on all our books. The results: in one year, switching to post-consumer recycled stock saved 24 mature trees, 5,000 gallons of water, the equivalent of the total energy used for one home in a year, and the equivalent of the greenhouse gases from one car driven for a year.

    Dedication

I would like to dedicate this book first to all of the hundreds and hundreds of students who have touched my life. Getting to know you and watch you grow into young adults is something that will be with me forever. Whether I had the opportunity to assist you in scholarships, careers, colleges, or just to talk to you, all of you will always have a special place in my heart. If it was not for you, this book would never have been written. And to those of you who had such faith in me during the past two years, thanks so much for your belief in me.

And to my family — my husband Jim and my wonderful children Jessica and Michael — I just want to thank you three for putting up with all my late nights of working on scholarships and this book and for all your love and understanding. And thanks to my mom, Joanne, and my sister, Mary Lou, who have always encouraged my writing and my dreams. And to my Aunt Lois for always asking how it was going, along with all my walks and talks with Jeanine, and to all the rest of my very good friends, young and old, who all believed in me and my desire to write this book.

And lastly, Dad, thank you for teaching me to face life’s challenges with unwavering determination; to dream the impossible dream and to reach the unreachable star.

Thanks to all of you — I love you!

    Author Biography

    Introduction

I have always enjoyed writing short stories and have entertained the thought of writing a novel one day. But my idea of writing always leaned toward fairy tales and suspense. So what is my first attempt at an actual book? A non-fiction book about scholarships – a big surprise to me! I have always read that, when writing, you should write about something you are familiar with and something you enjoy. Well, I love working with scholarships, have done a lot of research, and I have given countless lectures and workshops on them. When deciding to finally start my great American novel, I sat down and started this book. So much for fairy tales, but the endings are both happily ever after.

I am writing this book not only for the students, but also as a guide for parents and other school personnel to assist them in aiding the students with scholarships. This comes from me – first, as a mom with a 21- and 25-year-old, (one still a college student and the other a college graduate) and also as a College and Career Center Specialist/Scholarship Coordinator.

My awareness of scholarships started while I was working in the guidance office in a local high school. A few scholarship applications and advertisements would come in the mail and they intrigued me. No one had ever talked about scholarships with me when I was in high school, so my curiosity and questions began. How much could students actually benefit from these scholarships? Were they easy to obtain? How do the students apply?

There seemed to be quite a variety of requirements, each application different from the other. I began to investigate the different scholarships and applications that came in, looking anywhere possible to find even more. Much to my surprise, there were a lot more out there than I could ever imagine. As my position changed to College and Career Center Specialist, I was able to add Scholarship Coordinator to my title and work even more with the students in this capacity. I more or less created this position on my own, as my actual job
