    This Portuguese/English story is presented in three versions. The first version is an alternating Portuguese/English format, where the reader can first read a paragraph in Portuguese, and then follow along in English, learning words and practicing reading comprehension. The second version presents the entire story first in Portuguese, and the third version, in English. In this way, the reader can practice their immersion capabilities with the full story.

      A New Life/ Uma Nova Vida (English/Portuguese Bilingual Version)

      Whenever I have a problem or complaint, my parents always tell me that I am a normal 12 years old boy like any other boy of my age, and for some reason that is supposed to make me feel better about everything. What is great about being normal anyway? Who even wants to be normal and what does that mean after all?

      Sempre que tenho um problema ou reclamo de algo, meus pais me dizer que sou um garoto normal de 12 anos como qualquer outro garoto da minha idade e por alguma razão isso deveria me fazer sentir melhor em relação a tudo. Mas o que há de tão interessante em ser normal? Quem quer ser normal e o que isso significa afinal?

      By the way, my name is James. James Junior, actually, but everybody calls me Jay-Jay because it’s the sound of my initials. It’s simpler, it sounds better, it’s less embarrassing. I really dislike my name, it just sounds boring. Never met a cool kid called James Junior, but I think most names are not so cool, that’s probably why famous people have artistic names and superheroes don’t use their real names, I think.

      A propósito, meu nome é Jaime. Jaime Júnior, na verdade, mas todo mundo me chama de Jota-Jota, porque é o som das minhas iniciais. É mais simples, mais sonoro, menos embaraçoso. Eu realmente não gosto do meu nome, ele soa chato. Nunca conheci nenhum garoto legal chamada Jaime Júnior, mas acho que a maioria dos nomes não são muito legais, deve ser por isso que as pessoas famosas adotam nomes artísticos e super heróis não usam seus verdadeiros nomes, eu acho.

      That’s why I have chosen to be Jay-Jay instead of James, to be cooler or at least less boring. You see, when I said everybody calls me Jay-Jay I forgot to mention that this was kind of an imposition of mine. My parents have always called me James, ever since I was born. Not many kids grow up without having a family nickname, but I did.

      É por isso que eu escolhi ser chamado de Jota-Jota ao invés de Jaime, para ser mais legal ou um pouco menos chato. Quando eu disse que todo mundo me chama de Jota-Jota eu me esqueci de mencionar que isso foi meio que uma imposição minha. Meus pais sempre me chamaram de Jaime, desde que eu nasci. Poucas crianças crescem sem ter um apelido de família, mas foi assim comigo.

      So one day I just decided to start introducing myself to others as Jay-Jay. My dad was very upset because he is the James senior and he loves his name, but my mom convinced him that I was trying to distinguish myself like any other kid my age and he thought it was fair enough that I wanted to be normal, to fit in. That happened a little before my eight birthday, when we moved for the sixth time in eight years.

      Então um dia eu simplesmente decidi começar a me apresentar às pessoas como Jota-Jota. Meu pai ficou muito chateado porque ele é o Jaime pai e ele ama seu nome, mas minha mãe o convenceu de que eu estava apenas tentando me distinguir como qualquer outro garoto da minha idade e ele achou que era justo deixar que eu quisesse ser normal, me encaixar. Isso aconteceu um pouco antes do meu oitavo aniversário, quando nos mudamos pela sexta vez em oito anos.

      We’re travelers! My dad is a pilot and my mom is a flight attendant (her name is Sarah, by the way) and we change cities a lot. This is the seventh time in 12 years. I was getting used to the last place we lived. We were there for four years, so it really felt like home because that is the longest I’ve ever lived anywhere. As you must imagine, I got really upset when my parents told me we’d have to move again...

      Somos viajantes! Meu pai é piloto e minha mãe é aeromoça (o nome dela é Sara, a propósito) e nós mudamos muito de cidade. Esta é a sétima vez em 12 anos. Eu já estava me acostumando com o último lugar em que moramos. Ficamos lá por quatro anos e já parecia ser a nossa cidade natal, até porque esse é o máximo de tempo que já passei em qualquer lugar. Como vocês devem imaginar, fiquei muito chateado quando meus pais me disseram que teríamos que nos mudar de novo...

      Sarah: You don’t have to be upset, James.

      Sara: Não precisa ficar chateado, Jaime.

      Me: It’s Jay-Jay, mom...

      Eu: É Jota-Jota, mãe...

      Sarah: Oh, sorry. Anyway, you don’t have to be upset. Remember: no matter what happens you’re just a normal boy like any other boy your age and soon enough will make lots of new friends. Everything is going to be just fine.

      Sara: Oh, desculpe. De qualquer forma, você não precisa ficar chateado. Lembre-se: haja o que houver você é um garoto normal como
