SCHEME OF PRONUNCIATION
The Portuguese typical of São Paulo and Southern Brazil is used as the basic pronunciation for this manual, since it is probably more easily imitated by Americans than the other dialects of this country. Although there are regional differences, you will be understood in all parts of Brazil as well as in Portugal and Portuguese territories if you use this pronunciation. The intention is to facilitate learning and imitating spoken Portuguese rather than to indicate phonetics with meticulous accuracy.
Portuguese vowels are pure, consisting of one sound only. They should be pronounced distinctly and not drawled as in English.
The pronunciation given should be read as in English, with the stress placed on the syllable in capital letters. A loop under the line indicates that the sounds thus connected are pronounced in one breath (e.g., EH oo for the Portuguese word eu). Since, in some cases, the pronunciation of a group of letters differs according to the English word in which it is found, and since a few Portuguese sounds cannot be represented in English, the following rules should be remembered:
NASAL SOUNDS
Special attention must be given to imitating nasal sounds in spoken Portuguese, since they cannot be represented in English. The breath passes through the mouth and the nose at the same time when nasal sounds are pronounced. The tongue and teeth should not move. A dash above letters always indicates nasalization in the phonetic transcription. In a few cases where the natural tendency of an American would be to nasalize, the dash has been omitted for the sake of simplicity and at no loss of comprehensibility.
