Preface
This book provides the framework and methodologies that need to be applied during the initial, planning, analysis, and design phase of the VMware vSphere implementation in data centers.
This book will provide readers with the design fundamentals essential for a VMware engineer and architect, even before they implement VMware vSphere in their data centers.
After reading this book from cover to cover, readers will achieve the following:
The essentials of VMware vSphere
The essential skills required to design VMware vSphere management layer
The essential skills required to design VMware vSphere network and storage
The essential skills required to design vCloud
Readers will gain a great deal of advantage from this book. They will learn how to design a virtual data center with the given requirement and the key components that will yield great success to business and IT. They will also learn how to convert the industry standards to customer-specific by following the golden principle of the best practices recommended by VMware.
Upon finishing this book, readers will have the skills required to design, build, deploy, and manage VMs in a VMware vSphere data center with VMware ESXi and VMware vCenter Server.
What this book covers
Chapter 1, Essentials of VMware vSphere, gives readers an in-depth knowledge of VMware vSphere products' benefits and architecture, and the analysis of trends and challenges faced by IT. It also covers the appropriate methods, principles, and processes that the reader will apply to design VMware vSphere on infrastructures.
Chapter 2, Designing VMware ESXi Host, Cluster, and vCenter, covers the methods for designing an ESXi Hypervisor and its inner components. This chapter also covers methods for designing for the upgradation and migration of ESX, clusters and vCenter, and highly elastic infrastructures.
Chapter 3, Designing VMware vSphere Networking, covers the the methods for analyzing the given requirements and mapping them to network possibilities. We will also cover methods for forming design blueprints for networking infrastructures that are to be considered while designing. It also covers the scenario-based learning on network designing essentials.
Chapter 4, Designing VMware vSphere Storage, covers the methods for analyzing the given requirements and mapping them to storage possibilities, and the designing blueprints for storage infrastructure. It also deals with scenario-based learning on storage design essentials and the factors to be considered while choosing the right storage.
Chapter 5, Designing VMware vRealize, covers the methods for analyzing the given requirements and mapping them to vCloud as well as forming design blueprints for the vCloud infrastructure. It also covers the factors to be considered when choosing the right vCloud.
Appendix, About VMware vSphere 6.0, covers the new features introduced into VMware vSphere 6.0. It also covers the enhancements brought into VMware vSphere 6.0 in the network, storage, management, and availability areas, and shows a brief feature comparison between VMware vSphere 5.5 and VMware vSphere 6.0.

Conventions
In this book, you will find a number of text styles that distinguish between different kinds of information. Here are some examples of these styles and an explanation of their meaning.
Code words in text, database table names, folder names, filenames, file extensions, pathnames, dummy URLs, user input, and Twitter handles are shown as follows: The esxcli command-line tool.
A block of code is set as follows:
#esxcfg-module -g bnx2x#esxcfg-module-gs2io (for the Neterion)
#esxcfg-module-g ixgbe (for the Intel)
Any command-line input or output is written as follows:
vicfg-vswitch
New terms and important words are shown in bold. Words that you see on the screen, for example, in menus or dialog boxes, appear in the text like this: Though there are huge enhancements in vSphere 5.1 and as shared storage is no longer an obligation for vMotion, Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) will not use VMs local storage.
