A Child's Story

About this ebook
A Child's Story,- is about a little girl called Elaine and her struggle to be recognised as a gifted child by her mother, who just wanted her to be an ordinary child.
The story is initially about how Elaine talked to her Teddy and her other toys to make her life seem real. While it is also about how her mother did not understand that she could already read and write and even do sums.
Elaine was clever enough to realize that being so bright was not what her mother wanted from her, so she pretended that Teddy had taught her to do these things. The story that Elaine made up about teddy teaching her did not go down too well with her mom either, even though she knew that something very unusual was happening in her child's life.
Once Elaine had started school the teacher recognised immediately that she was gifted, but when she told the mother about this, she did not want to believe her. The mother also said firmly that as a family, they could not afford to send Elaine to the special school the teacher had recommended.
Elaine got very angry with her mother one day, so she ran out into the traffic and was run over. Then at the hospital when her dad visited her, the real story came out and he felt thrilled that he has such a bright little daughter.
Her grandpa George, later stepped in and provided Elaine with a bursary to cover the costs at the school for gifted children, but her mother still rejected the idea and this caused some animosity within the family.
Once Elaine had been enrolled at the school for gifted children, Teddy and the other toys were no longer so important to her, but secretly she still confided in Teddy, who had since been relegated to sit on a rocking chair and look out of the nursery window - while Elaine is away at school...

I began my library career at the Jhb. public library, and while I worked there part time, I also completed my Library Exams with the SALA. Then I was headhunted by Ekom, as I'd specialized in information retrieval and they needed someone to obtain current information on various projects for their engineers. Later I moved to Control Data, where I learned all about storing such information on their large computers. All the while, I also taught ballet, modern and Spanish, dancing in my spare time, as I'd trained as a dance teacher while still at school. After I married I ran two dancing studios for adults, where I also began to teach yoga and passive exercises. In my youth I danced for PACT for a while, but as I was still studying at the time, -I decided to give this up, although I continued to dance in various productions at the Civic Theater in Johannesburg. -Showboat, The Merry Widow, Guys and Dolls, to name a few. As I'd also joined two writing circles previously, I'd been writing all along, - mostly short stories. But then an opportunity came up for me to include English Literature and Creative Writing in my studies, so this is when my writing career really took off, even though I never published anything until recently, when I first uploaded stories on a local SA site, then Kindle, Kobo and now finally that I've cracked the 'meat-gringer," I've loaded some new stories on to Smashwords, which I think is a really wonderful site for writers, as it forces us to confront all the issues and make certain that everything is correct..

A Child’s Story

Introduction.
The story is about the mixed reactions within a family, once it is discovered that their child was exceptionally gifted. It’s also about the individual family members’ various perceptions as to what this will mean to each of them.
Julia, the mother, is badly affected by the news, mostly because she is afraid that she will lose her little girl and never be able to relate to her like a child again. For she imagines that once the nerds get hold of her daughter and train her to think differently, she won’t want to have anything more to do with them
Elaine meanwhile, has avoided confrontation for a time by using her ingenuity and pretending that her teddy bear has taught her to read and write. For Elaine has somehow realized that her mother would be upset if she openly announced that she had taught herself. -Strangely enough, her mom did not like the way she talked to her teddy all the time, either.
Later, when Elaine went to school and the teacher wanted to have her IQ tested, her mother refused permission. Then once her father discovered what had going on, he made arrangements for his daughter to attend a school for gifted children. While her grandfather decided to provide her with the necessary bursary.
The story is based loosely on a true story about a mother that wanted her daughter to remain just an ordinary, -little girl.
Elaine and Teddy chatting together
Part 1
Hello Teddy, I’ve got something interesting to show you,
Elaine said as she walked over to the upstairs nursery window.
"What is it this time, Elaine? Not another toad, -I hope," the big bear said.
No, it’s not a toad, Teddy. It’s a new bamboo water feature. Or at least it will be once Grandpa George and daddy have fathomed out how to put all the parts together.
"Oh, really, Elaine? I must say, it looks like nothing more than a pile of bamboo sticks to me. Not terribly exciting, Elaine," Teddy grumbled.
Elaine was about to tell Teddy more about the water feature when her mother walked into the room and said, Who were you talking to, Elaine?
Her mom asked this question because she was becoming increasingly concerned about the conversations that her small daughter continued to have with her toys and other inanimate objects such as the vacuum cleaner. She didn’t think it was normal, in spite of the fact that her friends assured her that all children spoke to their toys. -Maybe they do, she always replied, -but do they usually answer for them in a deep sounding voice. Then since this was often met by peals of laughter from everyone she spoke to, she now no longer mentioned this fact to anyone.
Oh, I was just showing Teddy the bamboo we bought this morning,
Elaine
