The Characteristics of a Birman Cat

Birman cats are a very intelligent breed of cat. They have really strong bonds with their owners. They love to be around people and are very people oriented, so they would be a great house and family pet for you to enjoy. They are very affectionate and sweet natured and love attention from humans. They are also very tolerant, so they are very good around children and get along just fine.

The Birman cat, also known as the Sacred cat of Burma, is a domestic cat. They originated from France and the Cat Club de France first recognized them in 1925 and in 1966 was recognized in the United States by the Cat Fanciers’ Association. Almost the entire breed of cats was wiped out during World War II. At the end of the war, there were only two cats alive in Europe from what history as taught us. To rebuild the breed, they had to be heavily crossed with long haired breeds and a Siamese cat breed.

A Birman has point, which means that its feet, ears, face, tail, and legs are a different color than its body. When they are born, they are completely white, then start to show color. Their eyes are blue and their feet are white. Some colors usually are, blue point, chocolate point, seal point, and cream point. Birman males weigh about 10 to 15 pounds, and females weigh about 6 to 10 pounds. They usually live to be a very old age.

A Birman cats coat and fur does not mat. They have semi-long, silky hair. Although they do not mat, they still need regular grooming on a regular basis. They have a single layer coat, so they only need to be combed every once in a while. Their coat feels silky and has no under coat and it does not knot or tangle up. During shedding periods it is good to brush them more often than you normally would. A Birman cat only needs to be bathed if necessary.

Birman cats are prone to obesity, so it is a good idea to keep them on a healthy diet so they don't get to large on you. You should always leave water out for you Birman cat, so that it may stay hydrated at all times. Most people that breed Birman cats recommend high-quality dry food, or natural home made cat food.

Birman cats are a relatively a healthy breed of cat, so the health conditions that they could possibly run into are the same as any other cat. They have no known breed related genetic diseases, so your cat should have a long healthy life if taken to the vet
