So often we are touched by people and events in subtle but very catalytic ways. Every event and person that touches our lives has the potential to impact us and add to the color and wonder of our experiences.
I wish to thank everyone at Llewellyn for their supportive touches in all my writing endeavors, particularly Carl and Sandra Weschcke, along with Nancy Mostad, who have made me feel such an integral part of the Llewellyn family.
Also I wish to thank the wonderful British medium, Bill Landis, whose Flower Clairsentience
demonstrations continue to inspire my imagination and my own efforts toward yet further development of my abilities.
And I am ever grateful to Dr. Peter Moscow who by touching my life, awakened new levels of friendship, respect, and professionalism for me in the metaphysical community.
I wish also to express my gratitude for everyone I have touched in this field and whose support has touched me in ways that I may not have ever acknowledged individually. To all I am very thankful, and I hold you in my thoughts and prayers daily.

Seeing Through Touch
Imagine that you have gone to visit an old friend, someone you have not seen in years. You are invited in and told to make yourself comfortable while he or she moves off to another room to change clothes, or to ready some snacks for your visit.
You settle yourself comfortably in the nearest chair. Immediately, you know that this is your friend’s favorite. It is a little more worn than the rest of the furniture, but it is not its appearance that tells you this is the favorite. There is something more—something indefinable.
You relax, settling into the chair. As you sit, you begin to realize that much has changed since you last saw your friend. So far, you have only had a few moment’s contact with your friend, but you have noticed so much.
You realize there is a great amount of nervousness about your visit. You can feel
your friend’s tension in your own body, as if it is being passed directly to you from the chair itself. You wonder if your friend has money problems, but brush that impression aside when you look at the decor of your friend’s home. This is not the home of someone struggling financially.
You begin to feel sad and alone. For some reason, your friend’s mother comes to mind. You wonder how she is doing, if her health is all right. It has been so long since you have had any contact with your friend’s mother, you hope that everything is fine with her as well. The more you focus on her, the more nervous you find yourself feeling.
Then, you are no longer comfortable sitting in that chair. You feel a strong need to move. You have all this nervous energy suddenly and nowhere to put it. You stand, breaking contact with the chair, and begin to feel better. You breathe more deeply. Although you no longer feel the tension you sensed while in the chair, you still remember it, and move about the room distracting yourself by looking over titles in the bookcase, and viewing a wall painting more closely.
As you relax, you smile at yourself. How silly of you! You must be more nervous about seeing your old friend than you realized. You rationalize your feelings as originating from your own nerves. Any impressions you garnered about your friend’s current state of being probably was surmised from reading your friend’s voice and body language. After all, you were very close once. While growing up, you went everywhere together. Didn’t your parents often joke about the two of you sharing the same brain? You chuckle softly to yourself in memory of it, and the last of your tension slips away as your friend returns and greets you a second time.
As the visit continues, you catch up on each other’s lives. You find your friend, like you, really was nervous about your visit. Things have been hectic at work; there has been much overtime and little playtime. Your friend’s mother has been ill, and expenses for care have increased to the point where it is becoming difficult to cover them.
Although most of what you felt while sitting in your friend’s chair is confirmed, the intensity of that experience is lost or softened. It has settled into a vague sense of I knew something wasn’t right,
but you no longer even realize when that feeling came upon you—much less how it did.
We often have experiences such as this, but unfortunately, we have learned to deny them. We shut them out or ignore them. To a great degree, we have been socialized away from honoring our more subtle insights and responses. After all, we are encouraged to believe that the psychic realm is the stuff of fiction or simply a product of our imaginations. At best, experiencing feelings when touching an object is one of those unusual and unexplainable circumstances that we discuss periodically to add spice to a colorless conversation or dull social occasion.
We have all had experiences where we felt something or knew something of a psychic nature, but we rationalized it, brushed it aside, or even suppressed it entirely. We refused to acknowledge it, because we had been taught that only what we experience through the five senses is real. We attribute our knowing something
to the person’s voice, their body language, or any outside clue that we could attribute to one of the five senses.
Even today, many people believe that anything of the psychic realm is not for them. Many people believe it is only suitable for the oddball,
but the fact is, almost everyone has had psychic impressions such as in the scenario described above.
What if a chair could speak? What stories would your furniture tell if it could talk? What if you could pick up a person’s pen and tell exactly what kind of day he or she was having? If objects of antiquity could speak, what new insights into history could we gain from them? What if you could touch someone and be able to sense where they had illness or aches and pains? What if you could hold a picture or favorite toy of a lost child and be able to see what has happened to them?
The human being has a sensitivity that goes far beyond what is often defined for us, and beyond what we often imagine. In this book, we will examine the reality reflected in the questions above. With a little awareness and practice, you will learn to develop your natural senses to read through touch what has imprinted itself on objects, people, and places. You will discover that you are naturally psychic and sensitive to all you touch, and all that touches you.
Clairsentience and Psychometry
Everyone is psychic. If you have ever had a psychic experience, you can have it again, and again, and again. If you have ever had insight or information on a person or events with which you are not familiar, you are psychic.
Psychic impressions come in a variety of forms. It may simply be a hunch, a vague sense of something impending, or even a flash of sudden insight. It may come as an auditory signal, as if someone is speaking to you outside of you, or even in your own head. It may come through a vision or a dream. You may catch a fragrance out of the blue that reminds you of something important. It may come as a passing thought.
Some people even experience tastes that provide insight into resolving issues or events about to unfold. It is not unusual for me to experience tastes when I am doing healing work with clients.
It helps me to define problem areas. For example, if I start tasting caffeine while working on someone, it very likely indicates there is too much caffeine in his or her system. I might recommend cutting back on coffee, chocolate, or pop, since these are the three biggest sources of caffeine in our society. It may also indicate a need for increased water intake by the individual. The water helps to further dilute and break down the caffeine in the body so that it can eliminate it more easily.
Most people believe we have only five senses. I like to think of a human being as comprised of seven: sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, common sense, and intuitive sense.
The true sixth sense, common sense, is the heightening and integration of what we experience with the traditional five senses. Understanding and using our senses to their fullest capacity is part of this sixth sense. When we are able to integrate and understand what our senses are saying to us, we can open up to awareness beyond what the physical senses can tell us. Common sense helps us to see the patterns of our life as defined by the physical senses. The intuitive sense then helps us recognize where those patterns are likely to lead us.
We can learn to use the physical senses to provide information that will help us to see the effects of that information on any level. For example, any good psychic is one who is able to see connections. If you can assess what has brought an individual to where he or she is at now, it is fairly easy to determine where that will lead. This is particularly true since most people never change their patterns, even when they recognize and want to change them. When we learn to heighten and integrate what we experience with the five senses through application of common sense, then the intuitive sense begins to awaken.
The key to utilizing the intuitive sense is the subconscious mind. All psychic impressions, as with most of the body’s energies, are mediated by the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is aware of everything that we encounter and express on the subtlest of levels. Because we rarely work with the subconscious mind—and have doubts as to whether we can control it—we often remain ignorant of what our subconscious perceives.
We don’t have to remain in the dark, however. There are a variety of ways to access the subconscious mind. For subconscious impressions to be recognized, they must be translated to the conscious mind. Meditation and hypnosis are two of the most obvious ways of doing this. They teach us how to shift the conscious mind to deeper, more subconscious levels.
Regardless of the means of accessing the subconscious mind’s perceptions, they still will most often be translated through the five physical senses. This is because most psychic impressions are often extensions of the five physical senses.
These intuitive levels of experience and perception of the subconscious mind correlate strongly with the physical senses:
• Physical sight extends to become clairvoyance
• Physical hearing extends to become clairaudience
• Physical touch extends to become clairsentience
• Physical smell extends to become clairaroma¹
• Physical taste extends to become clairgustus.
Each of the intuitive levels of our five senses has its own psychic and spiritual phenomena. Clairvoyance includes spiritual vision, dreams, imagination, auric sight, and such. It is a term often used to generically classify all psychic phenomena.
Clairaudience includes such phenomena as hearing spirit voices, music, telepathy, and comprehension of spiritual laws.
Clairsentience includes such phenomena as psychometry and healing. Clairgustus is the term used by traditional spiritualism to describe the phenomenon of psychic or spirit messages that come through fragrances and smells. The gustus comes from the Latin, meaning taste,
so for our purposes, I will use the term clairaroma
