STATHMORE . . . I GREW UP here. It is all I've ever known. As much as I have always dreamed of leaving this town behind and exploring the world, now that I am actually doing so, it fills me with a sense of melancholy. My father would have loved seeing me work the forge. But it seems life is taking me elsewhere, away from all this.
Gavin helps me onto his horse, a brown spotted mare outfitted with a diamond caparison. I make myself comfortable and hold my mother's necklace close to my heart, rubbing the stone with my thumb. A call goes down the line and the carts slowly rock into motion.
Go, Pixel, we're heading out,
Gavin says to his horse, softly patting her on the neck.
Looking back once more, I see the village slowly disappearing into the distance.
I sway slightly as the horse ambles onward; it's a strange rhythm. The hammer Viegar gave me hangs from my belt and knocks against my leg every few seconds. How many days until we reach the capital, sir?
I ask Gavin.
No need for formalities, Dane,
the knight says, "You can just call me Gavin from now on.
