    ABOUT THE AUTHOR

CHAPTER 1: CREATING AND SETTING UP YOUR BLOG

    ––––––––

Just about everyone blogs – or posts, as some writers prefer to call it – these days.  You can use these blogs to both promote your book and other programs, as well as make money from them, as you acquire a following.  To acquire this following, you need to create a blog that offers value – and you need to promote your blog to get traffic to it, since just about everyone is a blogger these days.  According to a U.S. News article: Can You Make Real Money Blogging by Geoff Williams, there were 181 million blogs at the end of 2011.  Now four years later, there are many, many more.

Generally, figure on posting a blog on a regular basis, ideally once a week, or even two or three times a week, if you have a lot to say and the time to write these.  Initially, it can take time to build up a following.  But keep at it, and over time your following and income will build.

    Creating Your Blog

As a first step, decide what your blog will be about.  Here are some possibilities:

    - It could be an extension of your book, which works well if you have a how-to, self-help, relationships, or business book.  In your blog, provide more advice beyond what’s in your book, or create a community of people to share stories, ask questions, or provide information to others.

    - Another approach if you have a novel or memoir is to write about a related topic based on the setting or social conditions where the story takes place.  For example, if your memoir is about recovering from domestic violence or illness, you might write about the latest developments on that topic.

    - Another possibility is to stake out a topic you are particularly interested in, even if it is not directly related to your book, since this will help to draw a following about that, and people may become interested in your book and other programs or refer you to others.

    - Share your opinion about developments in your field, and cite others with opinions and point out how you agree or disagree.

    - Be an aggregator, where you feature the latest comments or news about your topics.

Whatever you write about, create a blog that is memorable, so you provide new, interesting, and valuable information.  If you are in a niche with a lot of readers, such as in finance, health, and relationships, do something to be different and stand out.  Otherwise, it will be difficult to compete with already established blogs, much in the same way that you need to write a book and develop programs that offer something new and valuable.  So think about how you are unique and different in considering what to write about, whether your blog will expand on your book or is on a related topic. Also be ready to adapt to find new approaches, because the Internet and the interest of users is constantly changing.  As Amy Lynn Andrews points out in How to Make Money Blogging, (www.amylynnandrews.com/how-to-make-money-blogging):

The trick in making money as a blogger is selling things you can stand behind and things your readers are willing to invest in...You’ll significantly increase your chances of success if you meet a need for others instead of blogging as an outlet for yourself...Always be on the lookout for new income streams, and keep them diverse. The Internet changes constantly.  That way, if one stream dries up...you’ve still got others...Tap into your uniqueness.

While blogs were originally just text, now bloggers are incorporating photos and videos, so consider using these to make your blogs even more appealing.

    Setting Up Your Blog

A good location for your blog is on your website, where your domain name is followed by a page for your blogs called blog, such as www.yourdomain.com/blog.  A good reason for positioning your blog there is that as you attract traffic to it using traffic building techniques, this will increase the SEO on your site, because it has new content, which will help you go up in the rankings.  Additionally, when people like what you are saying on your blog, they can readily learn more about you by going to your main site.  You can also easily include links in your blogs to pages on your website, such as your home page, as well as to your sales page or squeeze page.

An easy way to set up your blog is to install WordPress on your site. Then, you can use the design that is already on your website or select another design from one of WordPress’s many templates.  If your website is already set up in WordPress, as about 70% of websites are today, you can go to your website’s wp-admin page, log in, and add
