Maybe you tried going vegan
, but just couldn’t get it to work in the course of your daily life. Maybe you felt as if you were starving and just couldn’t take it anymore. Or maybe you discovered that French-fries, potato chips and Oreos® are all vegan, and you actually gained weight and felt less healthy. Suddenly, you were a vegetarian or vegan who never seemed to eat any vegetables! All of these things conspired to make your blood work look bad, and you felt the diet somehow failed you.
What you really needed was a professional, a clinical expert to guide you past the pitfalls of following a plant-based diet. You also needed help to learn how to make it an exquisitely delicious eating experience - as opposed to eating what looks like bowls of dirt every day. You also needed someone to hold your hand and tell you that it’s okay not to be 100% vegan, that perfection is not necessary to be highly successful. To your rescue comes Mother-Daughter team Dr. Jamie Noll and Caitlin Herndon. The authors of the original book The 95% Vegan Diet: An Insider’s Guide to Taking Control of Your Diet and Health Without Having to be Perfect, Jamie and Caitlin now launch The 95% Vegan Weight Loss Solution to help you quickly get on your way to losing weight, building lean body tissue, and finding that sense of health you have long been missing.
Part One
Planning For Success on The 95% Vegan Weight Loss Solution
INTRODUCTION
In the United States, we often believe we have to be perfect
before we can truly be successful. However, this is simply not true. The finest batters in baseball do not hit a home run every time they go up to bat, do they? No. Babe Ruth struck out almost twice as often as he hit home runs, but he became a legend because of his relative success, hitting more home runs than most other players. This idea also applies to many issues in health and medicine. It is most definitely possible for you to have great health without being perfect!
A vēgan diet
= strict vegetarian diet
= No animal products
Why would you want to consider a vegan diet over a vegetarian diet, which allows for dairy products? Dairy products are thought to play a role in various human diseases, such as cancer and some autoimmune diseases[1]. And surprisingly, the rate of osteoporotic fractures is actually highest in countries with the highest dairy intake[2]. We have been programmed from an early age to believe that we need meat and eggs in our diet to get enough protein, and milk or other dairy products to get enough calcium. These ideas are complete myths. On the contrary, it appears that meat and dairy consumption in the U.S. are actually hurting our health, not helping.
Unfortunately, most people who try to switch to a vegan diet for health and weight loss fail, because 1.) They really don’t know how to ensure they are getting the right nutrition, and 2.) It is too severe a change for them and they simply cannot maintain it. Most people will not embark on a 100% vegan diet because it simply doesn’t fit into their lives. What they may not realize is that the diets of the healthiest populations in the world are not 100% plant-based. In fact, those populations consume a nearly 95-96% vegan diet. They are able to consume small amounts of animal products while not suffering from the chronic diseases we in the Western world do. They tend to use meat as a condiment rather than the main focus of their meals. This not only eliminates dietary factors known to contribute to chronic disease, but their diets are also much higher in healthy antioxidants known to help prevent chronic disease. The challenge for us in the Western world is that we don’t use meat as a condiment; it is usually the cornerstone of the meal. So how can one go 95% vegan within the context of our meat-worshiping culture?
We wrote our first book, The 95% Vegan Diet: An Insider’s Guide to Taking Control of Your Diet and Health Without Having to be Perfect to teach people how to do for themselves what they would otherwise need a dietitian to do for them: to design a customized, healthy, plant-based diet that could provide the same type of health results observed in populations in the world who aren’t dying from chronic disease. We showed the world how it could go 95% vegan within the context of the American culture. The other 5% could also be entirely plant-based, or it could allow for animal-based foods.
95% vegan = 95% plant-based = allows for animal products only to the extent that they don’t harm your health. You can also choose the other 5% to be plant-based, if you desire
Early on, we caught a lot of flack from strict lifestyle vegans for using the word ‘vegan’. Indeed, veganism itself is not just a diet but is an ideology of nonviolence. Those who follow a vegan lifestyle completely avoid any animal products in order to prevent animal cruelty. On a jargon level, many people do go vegan
strictly from a dietary sense. In fact, diet is often what people are referring to when they say they are going vegan
; they aren’t necessarily ridding their entire lives of animal products such as leather shoes. Interestingly, other than people who follow an entirely vegan lifestyle for ethical/animal cruelty reasons, there are no 100% vegan cultures in the world of which we are aware. While we appreciate the perspective of those who follow a completely vegan lifestyle, we also believe there is so much negativity associated with the word because of the fringe fanatics that give all vegans a bad name. In addition, we cannot agree with the fringe that anything less (such as just eating a primarily vegan diet) is not good enough
. We need to get past the word ‘vegan’ and the fanaticism, and focus on the positives for human health, the environment and
