PREFACE
I have high hopes for the future. A shift is taking place. A quantum movement. No one person can take responsibility for its growth. But everyone can join. Together we have begun to recognize that the way we have been living on Earth is not sustainable for us or for our families. It’s an urgent time for our biosphere, the place we call home. We are seeking change.
To be honest, I never thought I’d see the day the American Cancer Association and the American Diabetes Association would be encouraging the population to load up on fruits and veggies for prevention and reversal of symptoms from the high rates of cancer, diabetes and heart disease. But scientific studies prove again and again that plant powered foods, packed with nutrients, enzymes and healing antioxidants have become impossible to ignore. They have been proven to prevent and even reverse a litany of disease from living in our modern world. Even many of the bastions of conservative thought have caved in. They too have taken up hawking the powerful natural healing agents of a plant-based diet. It just makes sense. Wellness begins with what we put on our plate.
I couldn’t be more excited about writing this book and sharing what I have learned with you on how I healed myself naturally from cancer. Ten years after diagnosis I am alive and well and in better health than I was at 45. That is because I changed what I was eating 100%. To save my life, I opened up to a new lifestyle that I would never have considered if I hadn’t gotten sick.
Detoxing with living foods to restore order in the body and heal disease was not my original idea. My teachings are based on those of Dr. Ann Wigmore, who healed her own cancer using the power of detoxification and cleansing with Raw Foods.
Today I remain in awe of my body’s ability to forgive and heal if given the proper tools to work with. When I surrendered to Nature’s laws and allowed myself to collaborate with the grand plan, I received a million blessings I am still recognizing. I am in no way working alone. God works in mysterious ways to bring us back to center.
This book is by no means a complete guide but an overview of what healing with Raw Foods and detoxification looks like and why it works so well to restore, rebuild and repair the body. This book also begins to share with you what I teach at our Diet For Living School of Natural Nutrition. I hope it will get you thinking in a whole new way.
INTRODUCTION: DISORDERED EATING
I am old enough to have been at the forefront of the Modern Women’s Liberation Movement. Although I can’t imagine a world without it, much of its influence was designed to get women out of the house and into the work world. Millions of women had become frustrated with the isolation of the one family suburban household. Without hesitation we jumped at the chance to enter the workforce and a new norm was created. It has benefited our households and enriched the world. We are amazing. We juggle jobs, commuting, shopping, raising families, while going back to college, holding down intimate relationships, and any curveballs that life might throw our way. We women have more connections between the two sides of the brain. So we tend to be masters at multi-tasking and time saving, super heroes that strive to do it all. And in so many cases we are succeeding.
While we participate in the world with fierce passion, what has often been lost in the surge forward has been our sense of self-care. For many of us it is the last frontier to conquer. With our energy pulled in so many directions we have forgotten how to feed ourselves real foods. Deep down we know we are dysfunctional around food, that our eating habits are out of whack. But there are also so many other things to take care of. How can we possibly take time for ourselves?
The result has been a trend of disordered eating. Studies say that seven million women suffer from disordered eating. But I have been in women’s health for twenty years. I am going to say it’s much, much higher. What is disordered eating? It’s eating foods that we know will put on extra pounds. Agreeing to
