The Pain-Free Desk Warrior - Dr Gary Tho

    PREFACE

Work is stressful. It’s long hours, busy and people find themselves always looking forward to the weekends. They’re fatigued and not as healthy. Aches and pains are now a normal part of daily life. They write it off as due to work, bad posture, lack of exercise and old age – an inevitable part of life where nothing can be done to get rid of it for good.

The pain is uncomfortable. It impacts their quality of life and dictates what they can do. They find it difficult to sleep. It affects their concentration. They have mood swings and avoid activities, just in case it hurts. They stop sports and other activities they previously enjoyed. And they ask "Why do I have pain? What caused it? What can I do to get rid of it?

These thoughts are consistently echoed by my clients and the people I meet.

This book is specifically written for busy professionals, managers, corporates, executives, and business owners who have high stress, targets and deadlines, limited time, but always seem to be low in energy and frequently enduring aches and pain. They fear losing out, being unable to keep up with their workloads and being replaced by someone younger. They struggle to perform, and deliver at work, are sick and tired of always feeling pain, and had enough of missing out of life, and being limited by their health concerns. This book will help corporates and executives eliminate common aches and pains, minimise relapse, reduce MC’s related to musculoskeletal conditions, improve performance at work and home.

That being said, this book is appropriate for anyone wanting a different approach to health and pain management. It’s for anyone who’s had enough of pain, sickness and medications and are seeking answers to why they are suffering and how they can make simple, healthy lifestyle habits to proactively treat pain, and boost their health and quality of life.

I want to help you build your health and get rid of pain so you can do more of what you love doing.

    Good luck!

    SECTION 1

    YOU CAN BE FREE

    FROM PAIN

    Dear Dr Gary,

I’m finding it difficult to express my gratitude to you. You had such a profound effect on my life.

Through your expertise in healing – both physically and mentally – my life has changed dramatically over the last four months. Your amazing ability to heal, your constant optimism and faith, and last but not least, your welcoming smile, has been a lifesaver. (Just ask my husband!)

Because of you, I am becoming the person I again aspire to be, and vaguely remember once being. Thank you very much.

    – J.G.

    CHAPTER 1

    THE BODY CAN

    HEAL ITSELF

You and I were born to thrive… Getting out of back, neck or body pain is easy when you give your body the right conditions to heal.

Imagine you cut your arm badly. It’s painful and you scream and cry out. You then wash it with water. After applying an antiseptic cream, you put a Band-Aid over it. Finally, you ask your mum (or your best friend) to give it a kiss better. A few days later your cut heals.

What healed the wound? Was it:

    The crying

    Washing it with water

    Antiseptic cream

    The Band-Aid

    The kiss better

When I ask that at my health talks, I get a wide range of answers. Most say the antiseptic cream. Others say washing it with water and the antiseptic cream. Undecided groups say a combination 2, 3 and 4. There will be people that make up new options: Option 6, all of the above, and option 7, none of the above. Of course, there will be kind-hearted individuals who love the sound of the kiss being the healing factor.

My answer is option 7 – none of the above. None of the above does the healing. If you missed any of the steps, would your wound heal?

If there were no antiseptic available, it would still heal. If you left dirt and other foreign particles in your wound without cleaning and washing it, the wound will still heal. Yes, it may get infected and prolong the healing process, however the body will always heal itself.

What these things do is create an environment for your body to heal better, faster, and potentially with full recovery. Whether it is a cut on your arm or a stiff neck and back pain, creating the best environment for your body to heal is essential. If we miss these steps, the environment for healing is not optimal. The results would be suboptimal.

You and I were born to thrive. We have the innate ability to protect ourselves, and the innate ability to experience joy and happiness. Your body expresses itself in the best way possible. When it comes to health and healing, your body responds to the environment and resources available. Your body is doing its best to restore itself to a centred, balanced state where everything works smoothly. Getting out of back, neck or body pain is easy when you give your body the right conditions to heal. In this book I will show you how.

    CHAPTER 2

    THERE IS A CURE

My wish, and purpose in writing this book, is that people see there is always a solution.

My dad was a multitalented athlete. In his teens, he represented his school in football (soccer), rugby, badminton, hockey, volleyball and sepak takraw. Outside of school he excelled in martial arts, training at the Taiping Budokan Karate Club, Ipoh Waitankung Club and Ipoh Jōjutsu Kai. During a training session with his jō, his strike cracked his instructor’s bokken. The news spread quickly as he was the first person to do it.

When he was 20 years old, he injured his back while working as a clerk-of–works for a civil construction company in Ipoh, Malaysia. He was asked to give a hand to some construction workmen to unload cement bags off the back of a truck. There were 300 cement bags and just five of them. Each bag weighed 25kg, and they were required to carry them from the truck to the storage shed about 15 metres away. They were not shown how to lift the heavy bags. He told me all we did was just bend over, pick them up and away we went.

After about the 10th bag, my dad felt a cluck in his lower back. At that time, he did not feel any discomfort or pain so he kept lifting until they were done. When he finished work that evening, everything felt normal. He recalled, but when I woke up the next morning, I could not get out of bed because I was experiencing a sharp pain in my back which shot down my leg when I tried to move.

He was in great pain for more than two years. I could lift my foot only 100mm above the ground. I could not flex my head down or bend my body forward. I could not walk. I moved around by dragging my two feet on the floor and it took minutes to move a couple meters. It was hell for me, he said.

He visited several doctors for treatment to no avail. My dad checked into the Hospital in Ipoh for two weeks. After daily treatment and exercise, there was still no change. My dad could not accept the fact that he’d have to live with the pain for the rest of his life.

One day, his friend provided hope in the form of a famous Traditional Chinese Physician based in Singapore. He went to Singapore for a month on no-pay leave to receive the Chinese massage, treatment and Chinese herbs. But in the end he did not feel any better. He said to me, That trip and treatment cost me more than five grand. That was all of my savings and it didn’t work.

He returned to Ipoh and back to work. Hope came again when someone recommended an old lady doing massages. My dad was desperate and went to see her straight away. After about a month of treatment, he was able to move around with much less pain.

Unfortunately, the relief did not last long. He had a relapse a few months later, which resulted in another two-week stay in the hospital. The pain continued throughout the years, aggravated by his intense work schedule. A normal project required 60 hours of work a week, while others involved 20 hour days every alternate day with one Sunday off every month. Even after moving to Australia, my dad’s work demands were high. He also received treatment at the hospital in Bendigo, Australia, with mild temporary pain relief. There undertook weekly physiotherapy sessions. Doctors said he’d have to live with it and that he would need to take painkillers for the rest of his life.

It was only in 1994 when he was recommended to see a chiropractor that things started to improve. After 6 months of intensive treatment, and another 18 months of regular care, my dad said with a grin I’m all good now.

This was my first interaction with what was to be my profession, gift, and way of life. Since then I’ve always wanted to help people. It led me to my first life-changing decision. I was offered a place in both Medicine at Monash University and Chiropractic at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. I had three days to decide the fate of my life. However, the decision was simple.

During my final year of secondary school, I spent over six weeks doing work experience. I started with a short stint at a financial investment company that reaffirmed my dislike of desk jobs! So I worked at hospitals, medical imaging centres, as well as physiotherapy, osteopathic, podiatry and chiropractic clinics. I knew I wanted to be in health, I just needed to know which area.

The chiropractors I met were inspiring and impressive. It was their approach to health and quality life that resonated with me the most. Their clients had great things to say and a common perspective connected them to my dad:

Just like my dad, they knew they could get better and did everything they could to make it work.

My dad once told me, Do not resign to the victim role and give up. Stop thinking no one can help. I knew I could get rid of my pain. And sure enough he was right. After his back improved, my dad was back playing squash, badminton, jogging and swimming. He also coached the local under 8’s and under 9’s soccer teams.

This story is not a one-off miracle. I’ve seen it over and over in private practice in the last eight years. One of my first clients in Singapore was Greg, a 56-year-old shipping engineer from the UK. He suffered from back and hip pain for over 30 years. He’d seen dozens of doctors, specialists, and health care practitioners including chiropractors. None provided him with lasting relief. I asked him why he came in to see me, and his reply was because I had enough of my wife [also a client of mine] telling me to come in!

He was told his back was too severe for any surgery as three spinal discs were badly degenerated, spinal joints were worn, and bone spurs were abundant. Even his right hip joint was affected. Over the years, he decided to live with the pain. Pain killers prescribed for severe pain didn’t help, and at best, took the edge off the pain. Injections in his back provided some relief for a couple of days at most.

After our assessments and treatment on the first visit, we made two follow up appointments, one day apart. On his third visit, he came in with the biggest grin you’ll ever see. Before I could ask, he exclaimed last night was the first night in 30 years I went to sleep with no back pain. He could not believe it and was committed to continuing care so he could start reclaiming and taking control of his life.

I am always surrounded by miracles, even though many people do not believe in the possibility of getting well at first. A great friend of mine, Andy, is the ultimate example. When we first met, he was a skeptic. He’d heard about chiropractors and
