      A wonderful book charting the spread and influence of this vibrant art and design from France to the US.
      The designs and colourwork are a joy and the posters section is very colourful.
      A must have book for anyone interested in design.

      For those who know me, Art Nouveau is my period. I am particularly well read in it, and have had several hundred desktop pieces glorifying my abodes. Dover has published countless little books on and with elements of Art Nouveau design, from cloth to wallpaper to glass and everything in between. They have been enormously useful to artists and designers looking for inspiration or outright theft, and anything to leverage the most pleasant ambience provided by Art Nouveau is welcome.This new offering from Dover is a little different, because it takes graphic designs from other Dover books on Art Nouveau. It’s sort of a meta collection. The book is sectioned by country, so you can see how (very) different each one’s Art Nouveau was. Typically, some major artist set the tone and style, and derivations bloomed. Mackintosh in Scotland, Beardsley in England, Moser in Austria, Hoffmann in Germany, …. The whole period lasted from the mid 1890s to the early 1920s, and was subsumed by Art Deco, whose seeds are clearly evident, particularly in Austrian and German Art Nouveau (Jugendstil).

    INTRODUCTION

    On December 26, 1895, Siegfried Bing, a successful German art dealer based in Paris opened a new gallery at 22 rue de Provence which he called the Maison de l’Art Nouveau (House of New Art). The new gallery was devoted to what was then considered modern art, including works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and artifacts in glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany. A few years later at a Parisian World’s Fair, the 1900 Exposition Universelle, Bing expanded his reach by displaying complete installations featuring furniture, textiles, and other objects of all kinds created in this new and modern style by his substantial roster of artists and designers. Because of its central role in popularizing this new movement, the name of Bing’s gallery became the name of the style it featured, and what we now simply call Art Nouveau left its home on the rue de Provence and entered its peak years all over Europe and in parts of the world beyond. The artists and designers represented in this book were from France, Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, England, and the United States.
