STEP 1: IDENTIFY YOUR CLIENT
The first step in any project is to identify your client and their needs. This is vital in order to make a connection with your customer. The goal of Step 1: Identify Your Client is simply to get a better understanding of your client so that you might gain some knowledge of how to manage your client and tailor your project management to suit their needs. Remember that you are trying to form a relationship that will eventually give you the benefit of the doubt—you want your customer to trust you, refer you to his/her colleagues, and rely on your skill set as much as possible. The fastest way to form that relationship is to listen and look for clues on how your client thinks, acts, and works so that you might identify the most efficient way to work with them.
In order to start any relationship, you need to get things moving in the right direction; a good first impression goes a long way. If you want to make that first impression a positive one, do your homework and know why the client is talking to you—or why you are approaching them. You will typically have some kind of heads up as to why this client is reaching out to you, but you need to be prepared to start the discussion and have information that might be of interest to your client ready to go. Having information at the ready is also necessary when you approach them. Doing so can boost your confidence as well as that of your client.
