This is a cute early chapter book in the "Puppy Pals" series. It is a series definitely geared to young girls. The main characters are Kat and her best friend Maya. They are puppy freaks, although neither of them has a dog of their own. They have been in the same class at school every year until this one.

When a new girl shows up in Kat's class, her teacher asks her to sit beside her. Kat has already formed an opinion of her just watching her facial expressions and decides she does not like her. When she tells Maya, Grace, overhears her. Kat is not happy about having to sit beside Grace, but she feels bad about saying she does not like her. When Kat and Maya take Riley, the dog that is being boarded at her aunt's kennel, to the park she sees Grace alone in the park reading looking very sad. Should she ask Grace to be her friend? Will she invite her to go with them to the kennel to see the dogs?

There are some cute black and white illustrations in the book that add to the story. This is a series that little girls, especially those that love animals (dogs in particular) will enjoy. Short simple chapters will keep them interested. A good book for late primary, early junior classrooms as well as elementary school libraries.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in return for an honest and unbiased review.

About the Author

A Sneak Peek at Murphy

Back Cover

Kat was lying on the grass. Puppies were running everywhere! A tiny pug puppy licked her cheek, while an energetic Jack Russell jumped over her chest. Beside her, a young dalmatian playfully wrestled with a German shepherd.

Kat was surrounded by lovable puppies!

Kat? a voice called.

Kat’s mother joined her on the lawn. Pick your favorite puppy, Kat! she said.

But how could Kat possibly pick just one? They were all so sweet. Look, the tiny shih tzu could fit in the palm of her hand. The adorable black Labrador was dancing around, begging her to play. The red setter pup was as gangly as a newborn lamb…

Kat-nip! the voice called again, louder this time.

Kat sighed and opened her eyes. Her daydream was over. She knew she wasn’t really allowed to get a dog.

Hey, lazybones, I’m here! Her best friend Maya was standing over her. Come on. Let’s get going!

Kat jumped up. It was time to head to Tails Up!, the dog-grooming salon owned by Kat’s aunt. Aunt Jenn was so busy, she needed help. She had asked Kat and Maya to give her a hand.

Coming! Kat said.

The two girls hurried off toward the salon.
