About this ebook

A photographic celebration of American ginseng, one of the most elusive plants in the forest. This book also features the ginseng companion plants, so-called because they inhabit the same spaces and are often used to gauge habitat suitability for growing, finding, or restoring American ginseng habitats.

70+ photos of American ginseng and ginseng companions plants.

A virtual herb walk that tracks ginseng and the ginseng companion plants from unfurling in early spring to ripening fruit in late summer.

It's not a "how to" book; however, learning the companions of ginseng will help you recognize habitat.

It is a photo essay collection of favorite photographs taken over the years, throughout the seasons, in the ginseng habitats here at Wild Ozark.

Some of the photos are also in my other two ginseng-related books, Sustainable Ginseng and DIY Ginseng Habitat and Assessment Guide.

    Chapter One

    Before the Unfurling

    The Rousing of Nature

In early spring snow still blankets the ground.

When there is no snow, there is simply cold with an occasional warm day thrown in to tease. Frozen buds patiently await the cue to wake.

The earth slumbers, and yet — if Nature experiences anything
