About this ebook
You can learn a great deal from others experiences. As we went through our used sailboat buying experiences we documented every step of our long and somewhat painstaking journey along the way. Tim has over 25 years experience as a commercial crab fisherman and journeyman ship fitter and I have a talent for researching and investigation as a former real estate agent. Together we think we have put together some very helpful information for anyone considering buying a used sea vessel. In this book you will discover where we found much of our information and many other things we did along the way to successfully make our dream a reality. You will learn a little known purchasing strategy that could save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars. You will also discover how to contact the seller directly on any vessel you look at, a few creative ways of finding really good deals if you are interested in a project boat, how to thoroughly inspect a vessel to locate major issues before you hire a surveyor, and much more! Our experiences were not always pleasant but we persevered and now we are living the dream.

PREFACE
In many ways, buying a boat is similar to buying a house. That’s where my experience comes into play. I spent 4 years working as a real estate agent in Sultan, Washington from 2004 to 2008. My broker was a brilliant man and he could make almost any transaction work, regardless of the obstacles the buyer may have been facing. He was a genius at creative financing solutions
. I learned a lot from that man and I also have a love and talent for doing research, which has served me well in many other areas in my life.
My husband, Tim, has been around boats most of his life. His father worked on tug boats when he was young, then when Tim grew up he chose a career in commercial fishing. He spent the majority of his working days fishing crab or lobster in the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean. In the off seasons he worked in a ship yard as a journeyman ship fitter. He also put in some time as a yacht broker. In every job he held, he always made it a point to gain as much experience in every aspect of the job as he could, making himself a valuable employee.
Putting our talents and experiences together, we have gained a vast amount of insight throughout our sailboat purchasing experience. So much so, in fact, that we thought others may be able to benefit from what we have learned along the way. Although this book is short, I think you will find a lot of helpful information here. We hope this book will be a worthy resource in helping you to feel more secure in your journey of finding and purchasing a vessel of fulfilling your dream.

THE DREAM
My husband, Tim, has always had a dream to sail around the world. He had spent all of his working days either fishing commercially for crab or lobster in the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean, or in the off seasons he worked in a boat yard or as a yacht broker. I have had a lifelong dream of traveling and seeing the world, I just never imagined it would be on a sailboat. After Tim and I got married and put our dreams together, I thought, What better way to travel?
We can bring our home with us everywhere we go. Much like traveling with a motor home, except on water, we will not be limited to just one continent.
One of the things I appreciate most about my husband is his strong conviction to stay out of debt. Our society has programmed us to believe that debt is the American way and that it is a sign of prosperity and/or success. America, the land of the free….
It’s actually quite the opposite though, and our government sets the worst example as our country continues to devalue our dollar as they sink further and further into debt. When you continue to remain in debt, if you think about it, are you really FREE? The Bible tells us that the borrower is a slave to the lender
. We are willingly putting ourselves in the position of being slaves. At the time of this writing, Tim and I are both in our mid and upper 50’s in age and because of my husband’s diligence to remain out of debt, we are more easily able to make this dream a reality!
Tim and I were married in 2012 and we have been looking for a worthy blue water sea
