    About the Author

    Chapter 1

Matthew Andersen opened the red velvet box the salesclerk placed on the counter. The diamonds sparkled where they sat nestled in between white satin. It had taken him over a week to find the right ring. He couldn’t wait to see it on her finger.

Would you like to check the sizing? the salesclerk asked.

    No. I’m sure it’s fine.

The young woman turned the box a little to the side so she could get a better view of the ring. She’s a lucky woman.

Matthew shook his head. I’m the lucky one.

    She grinned. A Christmas proposal?

It was Matthew’s turn to smile. I have it all planned out. I want it to be perfect for her.

I’m sure it will be. It’s a beautiful ring. The woman handed him his receipt. Would you like me to wrap it up for you? I have some silver paper in the back.

He glanced up as the salesclerk reappeared. I’d like to take a closer look at this, please.

She placed the wrapped box on the glass counter, and reached into the case to pull out the necklace.

When she set it in front of him, Matthew knew he couldn’t pass it up. Can you wrap this up as well?

Of course. He was sure he was making the woman’s day if she worked on commission.

Fifteen minutes later, Matthew jogged across the street to his car. Winters in Chicago tended to be brutal and this year was no exception. The wind cut through his coat and left a chill in his bones. What he wanted to do more than anything was go home and curl up with Cali, preferably in their bed.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t going to happen. Cali was working and wouldn’t get off until after midnight. When she’d taken the
