I wrote this book for one reason only: to help you make real money in multi-level or network marketing. Feeling skeptical? I had been the World’s Biggest Skeptic about MLM. For good reason:
•I had talked to literally hundreds of people in network marketing and no one was making money;
•network marketing companies rapidly came and went, all had a vacuum-like ability to suck money out of the pockets of the unsuspecting;
•no network marketing company I knew ever offered a system for making money.
As a result, I stayed away.
But because the concept of network marketing is a solid one, namely recruiting an independent distributor who makes money both for himself and for you while recruiting other independent distributors who make money for himself and for you, I still had an interest. I was waiting for some bright person with a system for making money in MLM to come along but no one did.
I had to take things in hand myself... and either prove definitely that MLM was a gigantic hoax in which virtually no one could make anything... or a viable means of making increasing amounts of income.
I joined a network marketing company, Personal Wealth Systems, Inc.I had been familiar with PWS for some time thanks to the fact that it ran lead-generating cards in my card-deck. Intelligently, its president understood that people needed leads and he decided to profit from this by paying me for leads... and reselling them to his members — at prices I found ridiculously high! Other marketing systems were, however, missing.
•The marketing communications offered by PWS were flaccid. They talked about the glories of the company rather than the benefits to be derived by the independent distributors;
•They didn’t provide step-by-step guidelines to new distributors about what they had to do, when they had to do it, etc. they had to figure it out on their own.
•Their lead-generating mechanisms were scarce and overpriced, and
•they offered no telemarketing assistance of any kind.
This was the norm in the industry. What they deemed important was:
•Selling you high-priced and unproductive sales “literature”
•Selling you a wide variety of over-priced “sales aids”
•Selling you overpriced leads
•Selling you overpriced “welcome kits” with product samples
But giving you tried-and-true, solid, substantial, profit-making step-by-step guidelines for profiting was of no interest. They were fleecing their members!
I got into network marketing and in this book I have published my findings, describing what I had learned about the process and how people can make money in it. If you’re going to make money you’re going to have to follow a system.
In each chapter of this book I’ll be showing you how to establish a money machine; how to take a systematic approach to wealth building through network marketing. I’ll share with you insights and precise directions for what works... and what doesn’t.
This book is not some kind of panacea. It’s not some lusty “get rich quick” pitch. It doesn’t claim that success came effortlessly... or without constant thought and tinkering.     Introduction

    I wrote this book, my 12th, for one reason and one reason only: to  help you make real money in multi-level or network marketing. If you’re feeling skeptical about your ability to do so, don’t feel shy. Until recently I was the World’s Biggest Skeptic about MLM. For good reason:

    •  I had talked to literally hundreds of people in network marketing and virtually all of them were making no money;

    •  network marketing companies came and went with astonishing rapidity, but all sharing a common characteristic: a vacuum-like ability to suck money out of the pockets of the unsuspecting;

    •  no network marketing company I knew ever offered a system for making money.

    As a result, I stayed away.

    But because the concept of network marketing is a solid one, namely recruiting an independent distributor who makes money both for himself and for you while recruiting other independent distributors who make money for himself and for you, I maintained a long-distance interest. What I was really doing was waiting either for an apple to fall on my head a la Sir Isaac Newton or some bright person with a system for making money in MLM to come along.

    Unfortunately, no apples fell. And no one came along.

    It became obvious that if my own doubts about MLM were going to be silenced, I was going to have to take things in hand myself... and either prove definitely that MLM was a gigantic hoax in which virtually no one could make anything... or a viable means of making increasing amounts of income.

    In the spring of 1993,1 joined a network marketing company, Personal Wealth Systems, Inc. of Jacksonville, FL. I had been familiar with PWS for some time thanks to the fact that it ran lead-generating cards in my card-deck. Intelligently, its president understood that people needed leads and he decided to profit from this want by paying me for leads... and reselling them to his members — at prices I found ridiculously high! Other marketing systems were, however, missing.

    •  The marketing communications offered by PWS were flaccid. They talked about the glories of the company rather than the benefits to be derived by the independent distributors;

    •  They didn’t provide step-by-step guidelines to new distributors about what they had to do, when they had to do it, etc. This forced each new distributor to reinvent the wheel when they joined. Daft, no?

    •  Their lead-generating mechanisms were scarce and overpriced, and

    •  they offered no telemarketing assistance of any kind.

    This situation was unfortunate, of course, but it was in no way atypical of the industry. Indeed, it was precisely the norm, since NOT ONE network marketing company made it a priority to sustain the independent distributor on which the success of the entire enterprise rested and continues to rest. As you’ll see as you go through this book, and as your eyes are opened to the virtually deliberate way network marketing companies go about ensuring your failure and their own problems, supporting the independent distributor was the very last thing any network marketing company thought important.

    •  Selling you high-priced and unproductive sales literature... that was and is important;

    •  Selling you a wide variety of over-priced sales aids... that was and is important;

    •  Selling you overpriced leads... that (for those few even understanding the importance of leads) was and is important...

    •  Selling you overpriced welcome kits with product samples... that was and is important.

    But giving you tried-and-true, solid, substantial, profit-making step-by-step guidelines for profiting in their firms... that was and is of utterly no interest among network marketing executives who universally have the idea that you’ve got to find your own way to succeed in network marketing... just as they have found theirs. They have, of course, found you. Who you’ll find is not their problem.

    I would like to tell you that, like St. George on his way to the Dragon, I entered the lists prepared to handle this problem single-handed; that I fully understood the problem and knew right away what had to be done to solve it. I would like to tell you this... but I can’t.

    I didn’t know that to succeed in network marketing I was going to have to take on the complete job which the network marketing company itself should have been doing. I didn’t know that I was going to have to invent each step along the way without benefit of industry precedent and, worse, without the support of industry executives. Did I say support? Rather than support, I should have said with their active and insistent opposition.

    Yes, unfortunately, there was more often opposition than support... and, until very late in the game, there was no pretense of team work whatsoever. That was because the fleecing of the independent distributor was the way this industry worked when I entered and is the way it continues to work for virtually everyone in it right this minute.

    Indeed, if you’re an independent distributor with virtually any company in the industry you are probably being fleeced right this minute. How can I be so sure?

    Write down all the money you’ve spent in your opportunity so far. Add:

    •  your application fee

    •  your monthly fee x the number of months you’ve been a member

    •  the cost of your welcome kit or product sampler

    •  products you were forced to purchase (which are now sitting in your garage or basement)

    •  the cost of any leads you’ve purchased

    •  the cost of any advertising you’ve done

    •  don’t forget the cost of your phone bill or the gas for getting you to and from meetings with customers and independent distributor prospects.

    Now look at the asset side of the ledger.

    Just how much money have you actually made anyway? Consider what you made last month? This month? Projected for next month? Are you slimming the deficit or is the hole you’re in just getting deeper?

    It is to get you out of this hole, to help you make more money faster, that I wrote this book. I promised myself when I got into network marketing that I would publish my findings whether they were pro or con; I would describe what I had learned about the process and whether it was possible for anyone to really make money in it.

    Well, in this book I keep my word.

    Unlike the vast majority of the literature in the network marketing field, I have not gilded the lily. Nothing is sugar-coated in this volume. I’m letting it all hang out.

    What I’ve learned is that it is possible to make money. But that if you’re going to make money you’re going to have to follow a system. That if you play by the traditional rules of the network marketing companies, the rules which ensure that they make profit from you, you’re never going to make any profit for yourself.

    You must approach network marketing with hard-headed realism and with a coldblooded determination to do everything you can to make money as early as possible and as consistently as possible. You must create a money-making system, the system outlined in the following pages, and you must consistently use it.

    Does this system work? You have my word for it that it does. Why, in under one year I went from being just one of several thousand distributors in Personal Wealth Systems, Inc. to being the top distributor in the company. Similarly, in less than six months I became one of the top two distributors in Ad-Net, Inc., a symbiotic network marketing company that has as its sole business generating the prospect leads you need to sell your primary MLM opportunity to. You’ll be reading a lot about Ad-Net in the pages that follow, not because I think it’s a perfect network marketing company (I don’t), but because you need prospect leads and Ad-Net is currently the best available network marketing company providing them.

    Without previous MLM experience, I went from being just one more independent distributor to being in the top 1 % of MLM money earners — all in under a year. More importantly, I now make a consistent amount of monthly income from both programs... and this amount of money grows monthly.

    None of this has happened by accident and none of it has happened inevitably. It has taken a lot of experimentation, time, money and hard work.

    At all times, I have remained skeptical, and, as many who have encountered me during this period can confirm, bluntly critical and questioning.

    You, however, are now the beneficiary of this process. Because you are now being given insight into a system that can bring you continuing prosperity and a growing income.

    The key word here is system.

    In the next pages, you are not going to get one fat and happy anecdote after another, the kind of anecdotes that populate the pages of my less systematic network marketing colleagues. You’re not going to read about how one morning I woke up to find that, over night, 500 people had signed up in my organization and that thanks to a single 20 minute appearance at the local grocery store I was mobbed by thousands of screaming shoppers who forced me to take their credit card numbers on the spot so they could join my team. There isn’t one of these witless, and entirely unbelievable, stories in this book.

    Instead, in each chapter I’ll be showing you how to establish a money machine; how to take a systematic approach to wealth building through network marketing. I’ll share with you insights and precise directions for what works... and what doesn’t.

    As is my habit (as anyone who has ever read any of my other books knows) I shall spare no one. Those who have gone public with their reflections on this industry and their bloated claims deserve to be held to account. And in this book they are — finally.

    Chapter 1 takes up the question of how to select the right network marketing company. Most people seem to select a network marketing company with a complete absence of critical intelligence. In short, doing everything necessary to support the independent distributor.     Friend, with this book a new day dawns in network marketing. No longer will it be acceptable merely to sponsor independent distributors — and ignore them. No longer will independent distributors take this unsatisfactory state of affairs as a given. From now on, distributors will demand real company support and a system that works.     Chapter 3 moves on to deal with lead generation. You cannot succeed in network marketing... and your downline members cannot succeed... if you all don’t have a constant flow of high-quality prospect leads. This chapter shows you how to get them!

    Chapter 4 shows you how to get ready to handle the responses once you’ve got them. It’s amazing to me how lax people are about preparation for prompt and timely

    lead response. Generating leads is never enough for success... you’ve got to evaluate them properly and follow up appropriately. This chapter tells you how to do both.

    In Chapter 5 you learn how to get your new distributors off to a profitable start. Industry studies show that the average independent network marketing distributor sponsors no more than two people in any given opportunity. In this chapter, you’ll learn how to sponsor that minimum number in the first thirty days alone — thereafter maintaining a continuing recruitment program, an essential if you are going to make real money.

    Chapter 6 carries on the discussion by showing you just what you’ve got to do to work with your distributors week in, week out so that they produce both for themselves and for you. This important topic of independent distributor maintenance and support is widely overlooked in the industry literature, but unless you succeed in this area you cannot make network marketing profitable. It’s as simple as that.
